  • In this video I attempt to explain how I record high quality car engine and exhaust audio for my videos using my Lexus ISF.
It's my first "how to" video I have planned and I'm sure the quality of each video will get better. I had to use one of my old lapel mic so please ignore the bad audio. I've done my best to fix it up.

You have managed to address all of my questions in one video when it comes to equipment! I can't wait to watch the post processing video, which I'll be moving onto now. Learned something important like maximum spl, attachment device, position.. etc.
I've tried with the 2 small pin mic and stereo to two mono audio via modified 3.5mm splitter cable, and zoom h1n.
For the engine bay, I usually attached it close to the intake, but sometimes I do that near the battery to catch some transmission noises.
Due to budget issues, I can't go any further with the equipment.
But good to consider for the future upgrade.

I've got a big tour planned end of month and wanting to set up some mics for car! Though its all standard setup so I'm struggling a bit to hear the exhaust over wind noise, but that's probably cause its just a cheap little lavalier mic, rather than the equipment you have!

Sorry if there's more than 1 comment; I had a few questions and youtube didn't agree to posting correctly for some reason. I thought I saw:
    - The arm and zoom h5 are 1/4inch thread (timestamp 2:44)
    - The mic stands are 3/8 inch thread (timestamp 2:53)
In the Ali pictures it's unclear if the suction cups come with female thread only, or if they have the male thread as well.
Did you use 1x 1/4inch for the arm, and 2x 3/8 inch thread for the mics or did you use 3x 3/8 inch with a 3/8male to 1/4female?
Did the suction cups have the bolt included or did you have to use a 2x male converter/adapter for the mics?
Note: I found out the 4.5 inch size is for the 3/8 thread, the 3 inch isn't available with 3/8 thread.
Thanks for the information and inspiration, cheers!

With the gain on the H5 set at max 4, (any higher and there is massive clipping) and with the mic at 30com from the exhaust, I cannot get the same quality recording as you. If recording live with video then you want something small like the 4061 I mention in this vid

What suction cap you use? Aliexpress Link doesn't work for me in my country.

Ulanzi suction cup these days. A bit stronger than the generic suction cup

Should you tether suction cup mounts to your car

Hey! Awesome video. I've recorded my first attempt with the same mics and a Tascam DR-44WL. Unfortunately it was too loud. I almost had to put the mic gain set to 0db. My recording settings are: .wav 48khz 24bit. I was thinking about if the phantom power was the problem because the mic only work with it activated. Hope you understand my english.

I hope you managed to sort the problem. Phantom can make the signal hot so you might have to try -12 or -20 db gain

I have a question. How do i delete some tire and street noise? Wich Software do you use for filter and mix the audio sounds. I've got also your setup, but shure sm57 instead the rode mic. Its basically the same.

Best way to get rid of it is to not record the road. Be sure your mics are pointed across the exhaust, not down towards the ground. The sm57 is a great mic too. I use Adobe audition but rarely use any noise reduction unless I have to. Wind must be avoided when mounting too :)

I'will try it. Thank you 👍🏻

Hoping this setup fixes the fact I've never gotten good car audio, I've tried all the "cheap" setups and even then it all still sounds too high and pingy time to actually invest in this.

Yeh it seems gathering high quality audio is neglected by most

I’m confused where those mics were in the rollers you were showing

You record the audio then the rollers. Add the audio in in post on clips without the mics

You should definitely get you a zoom F3 32bit float Recorder. Makes recording so much easier because you don't need to set gain anymore. No clipping anymore with 32bit. Just hit record and go

Would it be possible to record audio for drag racecars in this fashion . Cars are going over 200mph and are loud 1400hp rotary’s .
