    Great ideas and suggestions... sometimes, with really reflective cars - you can see the camera in the shot, so I've used some diffusers and sheets even to block my image. Also, a small handheld LED helps to place underneath a car, tire well, dark areas.

      @@joenicklo I have a decent amount of gear from shooting real estate photography, but on the weekends I like to go to car shows and capture photos/videos while there (some examples on my channel). Since I do quite a bit of moving around I try to carry as few items as possible. Usually my a7iii, a lens or two, and my Air2s. If you have any tips for a "run and gun" style video that would be awesome. The cars are usually parked fairly close and I'm consistently working around other spectators.

    Your tips are a breath of fresh air .. I thought I was the only in the filmmaker world that don’t like to rely on gimbals. I truly think hand held and tri pod shots seemed more natural .

    • @joenicklo
      @joenicklo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that unfortunately, a lot of younger filmmakers see gimbal shots from their favorite youtubers and tying that they need to do that too. I’m about to post a car show video that I filmed 100% handheld for 7hrs in one day! I couldn’t imagine walking around with a gimbal for 7 hrs...it comes down to being practical too!

    • @Jones_Media
      @Jones_Media 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Driven Films I think you’re totally right !
      I once fell victim to that . But once i seen how inconvenient carrying a ronin m was I scaled back the use of it . honestly I think not using a gimbal opens the door for more creativity. I can’t wait to see your 100% handheld car show vid 🙏🏽

    Very nice! How about frame rates and shutter for the fast shots?

    • @joenicklo
      @joenicklo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on what you're shooting (fast moving? engine beauty shots) I stay 180 degree shutter or 90 degree if its fast moving.

    Those audio tips are great, I wouldn’t have thought of them. Think a shotgun mic would be worth adding? And do the Zooms not pick up any knocks, etc?

    • @joenicklo
      @joenicklo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shotgun is directional so where you point it, it will pickup sound. So let's say you've got the mic pointed at the road, that's where it will primarily pickup the sound. I'm not an audio engineer and by no means the authority on recording sound but that's just how I do it. I'd stick with Lav mics for budget jobs. If I need something high-end, I'm hiring a sound guy. As for knocks, what do you mean?

  • @Allaboutmepodcast
    @Allaboutmepodcast 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First off appreciate the content of this video. I'm new to this and this was very helpful. I purchased a Panasonic GH5 and it cam with a 18 to 35 mm lens. For auto filming. What other lenes would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

    • @joenicklo
      @joenicklo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love shooting on the 18-35! It's my go-to. I'd pick up something to compliment it. You can go two routes. Sigma 50mm Prime + another focal length like an 85mm, OR you can get the Sigma 50-100mm.
      If you do a lot of focus changes when shooting, the 50-100mm has heavy focus breathing however, you'll cover a lot with it.
