I did a complete DYI reno on my bathroom. Your videos are straight forward, easy to understand and made the job go smoothly. I used Mapei Aqua Defense to seal the tub area and that product is all it says it is. What I like about your videos is you get straight to getting the job done, you talk along the way which is perfect and usually answers any questions one might think to ask. Thank you for the very informed videos. I would not have been able to do this project without your guidance and assurance that I could do it myself!!!

There is no such thing as a tile mafia. There are either professional tile setters, mediocre tile setters and just plain hacks. A smaller percentage are really pro tile setters. I put this guy somewhere in the middle as far as knowledge. Having said that, there is nothing wrong with wanting to save money and doing it this way if you know the drawbacks also, which he doesn't address here. He wasn't honest as to why a professional wouldn't recommend doing it this way, and it isn't the money. As a tile setter myself for 35 years, I wouldn't do this in my home just to save money, unless it was just some secondary bathroom in good shape that doesn't get used as much and even then I might just decide to tear it out and do it the professional way. There are many reasons I wouldn't do it this way that have nothing to do with money.

I was a tile contractor for 25 years and I always removed all metal fixtures, soap dishes, and covered the tub with a heavy canvas in case I dropped a tile or something on the tub corner. That way you do not chip the tub finish. I have had great luck with redguard although Mapai products are good too. One last thing. I always spread my thinset level across the shower wall so that I can lay a nice even bed of mortar and I go to wherever 3 or 4 rows of tile will reach. Like if the tile is 11 3/4 inches, I spread 36 inches level across the wall and lay those 3 rows, then do the next 3 rows. I like your videos

Wow. I just got a quote from a company that does acrylic showers. The list of what they could not do was longer than what they could do. Bottom line he quoted me - with a straight face - $20k for basically three pieces of acrylic. A bottom piece and two sides (the other two sides are glass). Of course ripping out the existing tile is part of their approach.
Needless to say Jeff has absolutely inspired me to go over the existing tile. Don’t think I have any mold issues but what the heck go ahead and do the water membrane for good measure.
    Thanks Jeff!
P.S. I’ll take some before and after photos and post them if possible.

A n incredible lifesaver for those of us on a budget! And its so true what was said about contractors. I asked about new tile, and next thing I know, all anyone wanted to discuss was 5-10 grand for a total renovation! I have experience tiling my own kitchen so this should be easy-peasy if I adhere to the directions :) Thank you so much!

A contractors pet hate is people pretending to want something but only looking for tips on how to do it. I suspect what the contractors did is, in the trade called ‘Pricing Yourself Out of the Job’, just to get away. Not trying to be mean but you said you had experience and thanked here for the extra info you needed. 2+2=......

I'm so glad to stumble upon this video....I was watching a video on how to assemble a corner shower organizer which came without paper instructions. Any way, this video is super helpful because we are purchasing a house which requires remodeling, adding living space and finishing existing areas. The only bathroom in the property has pink and light green tile...not ideal. Rather than going with a demo cost and new install which is outside of fixing budget, this is the perfect solution!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge...I don't like to go to FB unless required, but your videos are worth sharing with the whole world.

Add a v/o edit in the video explaining filling in and securing the schluter edging. If you aren't wedging it under the old tile, just butting it up against the cut line like I did. This was tricky and hard to keep laser straight. Holding it in place while the mortar dries is a loooong time! Thanks for all that you do, Jeff!

If you're using a quarter inch by quarter inch trowel you need to back butter your tile. You should never grout your corners or where the tile meets the tub. Always use 100% silicone on all joints and corners. When you're applying thinset on the wall don't go up too high or else it starts to dry. I put maybe two feet worth of thin-set up before tiling. I never grout on the same day. Guys like you keep me really busy. Thanks for all the work. P.S. always silicone in all your plumbing fixtures.

This project I guess you can only do if the tile was done correctly last time.
I had someone do my very small bathroom about 2 1/2 yrs ago. He removed the tile which was all the lower 1/2 of of the room, then tiled only over the tub to the ceiling. Apparently, the walls weren't level and he didn't use spacers. So what should be beautiful subway tile is a hot mess with terrible and inconsistent grout lines and uneven tile. 😭

Awesome video!! I took this project on while my wife was out of town because I know she would say it can't be done this way. Let me tell you, the transformation was amazing and I never cut a piece of tile before this project. In total, I spent around $1,300 for tools, tile, cement and other supplies (e.g., a laser level is a must) and around $2,100 to have a frameless door installed. The door installation was the only part of the project that I didn't feel comfortable doing myself. The shower door guy was blown away that I did it myself and that it was tile over tile. For the walk-in shower floor, I used penny tiles with an epoxy grout (Starlike EVO). I was a bit intimidated to try an epoxy grout because of the quick dry-time, but this product was very forgiving and I had no problems. Thanks so much for posting this video and for anyone out there thinking about trying this, I'd say go for it. Just take your time with the tile measurements and planning the tile placements. Cheers

    Hello,
I am contractor in Arizona, the reason we want to Tearout the old tile and start from scratch. The plumbing fixtures 90% of them won’t fit back on.
Also we are required to warranty all of our work for 2 years. Going over someone else’s work we are liable for anything they may have done wrong. That’s why many contractors don’t want to tile over tile.
Plus we are registered contractors, so we have to follow building codes. Set by the state to protect homeowners.

If you do it this way, there are many things that could still go wrong, he doesn't mention. Easier and cheaper doesn't mean better. He is doing a good job of promoting his DIY channel and teaching cheap shortcuts. He could be more honest bout it. I get wanting to do things cheap and easy, and it's not always going to have terrible results, but there are good reasons why professionals do things the way they do that have nothing to do with just taking people's money away from them.
