How AI Can Help Humans Save the Planets Biodiversity | Tanya Berger-Wolf | TEDxOhioStateUniversity

  • We are losing biodiversity at an unprecedented scale and rate, faster than we are able to measure the loss, let alone combat it. These are daunting challenges, which require every tool available to humans. Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf discusses how Artificial Intelligence (AI), the ultimate bio-hack, can help us slow the destruction and even reverse the damage. AI not only makes it possible to quickly scale conservation solutions, but in ways that can be remarkably personal, enabling each and every one of us to make a difference. Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology at the Ohio State University, where she is also the Director of the Translational Data Analytics Institute. As a computational ecologist, her research is at the unique intersection of computer science, wildlife biology, and social sciences. She creates computational solutions to address questions such as how environmental factors affect the behavior of social animals (humans included). Tanya is also a director and co-founder of the AI for conservation software non-profit Wild Me, home of the Wildbook project, which brings together computer vision, crowdsourcing, and conservation. Wildbook has been featured in media, including The New York Times, CNN, and National Geographic. Tanya thanks the co-founders of Wildbook whose StripeSpotter class project started this wild journey. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Great concept … does someone know the boundaries of it?
How small can the animals be in order to still be registrated? The extinction of smaller animals has quite a big impact.
What species are currently overseen? And does someone know where to find some good data on the matter?

While the comments are negative it's valid to criticize ideas. This idea sounds like a waste of resources when what we need to be doing is figuring out a way to slow down the effects of pollution, and set better measures for being more environmentally friendly. Furthermore I am not keen on the idea of tracking devices everywhere and AIs scanning instagram photos etc. And lastly humans are the greatest threat to extinction, so ironically the AIs's most immediate solution would be to get rid of a large amount of the population to save the Earth.
TLDR: Sounds incredibly expensive and a waste of resources when better solutions are necessary

I see your passion about tracking biodiversity, but that passion eludes me. I am left wondering about the overarching issue - that being- what WE are doing to CAUSE the problem in the first place. This problem is FAR GREATER than problems with wildlife. It goes to plant life. It goes to aquifers. It goes to health - of ALL species - flora AND fauna.
EVERYONE who has extended their education beyond yours, and included both the history and nature of capitalism, as well as history itself, has already concluded that the only way to end the great extinction is to end capitalism. You didn't even mention that. But now, we've gone farther than that. If we were to end all (100% of) fossil fuel emissions TODAY, it would take 1,000 years for the warming trend to reverse. By then, it's unlikely that the earth will sustain all that much life. A new evolutionary chapter will need to begin, and is probably doing so right now.
Artificial intelligence isn't the answer, and the shortcomings in your talk prove that. You looked at the smallest part of the picture and described it accurately and with passion. If that's the promise of artificial Intelligence, I'll pass. I prefer to exercise my own intellect in order to see the bigger picture.

All countries that call themselves (or we call) communist are CAPITALIST at their core. If they survived without money (capitalism), then they are authentically communist, but they don't. I know of NO country that is called communist that isn't really capitalist with a different way of sharing power for the few. Look at the old USSR and then look at the new USA. Tell me, what is the difference? That isn't a rhetorical question. Do you see a difference, and if so, what is it? I lived through the cold war. I can't see the difference.

@@gailg1458 You have a uncommon definition of communism.
As far as power being concentrated in the hands of the few I agree that there is little difference between the USA and the former USSR. Americans probably have more choice about who gets the power.
I was speaking from an environmental perspective. Because the average Soviet Citizen was poorer they probably didn't contribute to global warming as much as the average American Citizen in the same period did. Though obviously the Soviet Union did have some bad environmental problems.

But regardless of what communism is or is not, if you look at what makes capitalism "tick", it's OBVIOUS that for as long as capitalism rules the world, the world as we know it is guaranteed dead. It is simply ONE solution (to be combined with other solutions) to help save Biodiversity. And I believe we will need all the help available, because a deliberate return to a world without technology is unthinkable.
PS: It is clear that patching up will not suffice. We also need to rethink our relationship with nature.
Yet this AI method is a small but necessary part of the job.
Il est clair qu’il vaut mieux prévenir que guérir. Nous devons absolument repenser notre rapport à la nature.

Ai would be an accident of nature same thing how we evolved. Evolution, luck and natural selection. A.I. would threat us like we threat nature. In short, how are we helping nature? We are not, we are destroying the very thing that shaped us. How would A.I. that evolves from our minds, and probably the most greedy minds because it takes allot of resources to create it, make this world a better place?
