My single mom made sure we had a pack of dogs to take care of her two girls, when Grandma died, the dogs were our babysitters, and we were old enough (I was 11) to take care of the basics. And do our homework. Etc. But we had no less than 7 dogs after that and she taught us to not answer the door or talk to strangers so the dogs kept strangers away. We had a large backyard so plenty of room to play. And we had cats too. And they would sleep on the couch or in our beds. I learned that life is no fun without animals. Later, I married a man who only had cats growing up. But for some reason, our cats are all very needy and demanding. He won't allow the dogs inside so there's that. I also have chickens, meat rabbits, geese, turkeys, ducks, and goats for meat milk and eggs and companionship, they are amusing. The geese are great lawn mowers. He won't do any butchering, so that's my job. He also won't milk. But he used to wonder who I was talking to outside and now, after 17 years he talks to the animals. There was a time, he would be driven nuts as the animals (cats and dogs) would follow him around the property but he hasn't complained about that for many years.

My dog Cooper died at the beginning of 2018. He was 12 years old and everyone who ever met him fell instantly in love with his warmth and vivacious playfulness. Since his sudden passing, I've found my depression and anxiety have steadily gotten worse. It's strange to think that him getting excited when I came home or waiting by the bathroom door for me to come out or my bedroom door to greet me good morning had such an impact on my state of mind. I remember when it was the hardest for me, he was always by my side. But, now that he's not here on this earth anymore, I find it so hard to be alone with myself. I can't motivate myself to do anything. I miss him. If I think about him too much, it feels just like the moment he left.

My dog makes me so much happier in so many ways! Unfortunately, I am often more anxious because of the lack of acceptance of pets in so many places. When we travel, he needs to go in a bag, as if he was an object. I cannot go to a restaurant, to the grocery store, to the movies, to some people's homes, in public transportation, etc. with him, so I either stay home or suffer for leaving him alone. I hope some days pets are as accepted as members of our families. To most of us, our pets are like our children.

His point about homelessness is SO important, we need more shelters to accept animals. When people aren’t familiar they will often look at someone who is homeless with an animal and think of it as selfish, what an awful life for an animal. In my experience, and like this doctor pointed out, they love these animals like family. They will make sure their animals eat before they do, they will go from org to org trying to get them medical care if it’s needed. Instead of trying to force these people to give up their animals, we need to be taking them in. They also provide them hope, love, a purpose, they are necessary for that persons well being.
Great talk, that story about Molly almost made me cry, it just hit me out of nowhere for some reason.

@@defendersofhumansandthenat7378...That problem is already solved. There are hundreds of homeless shelters in America who do not take in pets. So if someone who is homeless who does not have a pet or is allergic or uncomfortable around them, go there. The ones who do have pets then go to a shelter that they can bring their pet along. It's just getting shelters to start realizing what pets mean to people and start accepting the animals.

    • @maeve_a
      @maeve_a ปีที่แล้ว

@@defendersofhumansandthenat7378 as kipper points out, there are already plenty that don't allow pets. But even a room division could solve that. One side for people who don't like or who fear animals. Or are allergic.
You might even be surprised how many people would love to get over their fear. I've had people approach me with my pets that they feared, asking if they could touch, safely interact, and help them with the fear. I've had this with pet snakes, and also with my Chow Chow, which is a breed many fear. Sometimes, just seeing someone who doesn't seem intimidating themselves (me) with these animals can encourage that moment of bravery and breakthrough.
P.s. i used to be horribly allergic to cats and am happy to say that it's gone, and I've since had 9 cats come through my life.

glamdolly20 I’m so sorry for your loss and all you’ve been through.
I don’t know where you are but it is worth looking into organizations that can help you with these bills, there are non profits out there that sometimes do this. It’s a lot of research and calling, but if you’re successful it can be worth it. I would just google animal organizations, non profits, help with vet care debt, etc. and put your area. I don’t want to say it’s a given and get your hopes up. I have worked with homeless people in the past trying to get vet care for their animals, and I came across organizations that only help once the charge has already happened. I know you’re not homeless, but if you are low income or your debt to income ratio is not good then you could qualify for something like this.
I love my cats vet, we’ve been through several vets and I finally found a great one. And while they’re a little less than other vets, they’re all just so overpriced it’s really unfortunate. Just like human medical care, it should not cost this much to keep people and animals healthy and alive.
      Good luck to you 💜

As someone with BPD who sometimes feels like I have no boarder and others emotions get to me and i can't block it and easily feel overwhelmed and agitated because of all the noise and light and feelings- I feel similar. Animals don't talk and demand you respond within 0.5 seconds with an appropriate answer , being considerate and empathic and tell whatever is polite and comforting and accepted etc etc. They just ask you to maybe pet them or NOT pet them.....but they are so much less complicated......I don't know if that is similar to what someone with ADHD etc experiences.....

It was quite the scene with a 7 year old walking around the yard with ten baby geese following me in a straight line 🐥🐥🐥🐥 cows 🐮 dogs 🐕 turkeys 🦃 horse's 🐎 🐴

Stacey Hunt That is remarkable, and makes so much sense, but I’ve never thought of that. I know they help with all kinds of things, but hallucinations are a big one. I’m so glad you have that! And I hope you will always have pets. And I would never give mine up either. My worst fear when I was pregnant was my child might be allergic, and thank God he wasn’t! Cause I could not have made that decision! But if someone is allergic to cats, instantly I know I couldn’t date them. My sons best friend is allergic which is difficult. My son has autism and it really is his only true friend and he needs that. They’re 10 now, they’ve been friends since they were 3, and he couldn’t start coming over and staying long periods of time till the past year. When he was little and he’d come over twice I had to send him home shortly after he got here cause he was just a sneezing mess and I couldn’t let it get worse, that broke my heart, he didn’t want to leave and my son was upset. Recently he’s been so much better and has only had to take meds twice. I do have to put my cats in the bedroom, which is fine for a few hours, I’ll hang with them or they’ll sleep. But unfortunately the boys want to do a sleepover, and I’d prefer it over here, and my son also just can’t sleep anywhere else, he always gets upset, but I just couldn’t keep my cats locked in overnight. As long as he’s not in the same room with them he’s even okay, if they get out for even a little bit he starts sneezing.
So yes, never give them up, and I’m so glad they’ve helped you. PTSD is not easy, and I’m sorry you’ve had to endure that. Lots of peace and good health to you 💜

How is it fair to do these things to _any_ living, breathing, _feeling_ - in other words, sentient - creature?? (Yeah, I know, I know. The argument is "Well what if _you_ had cancer?? Wouldn't you want a cure?" My response is: WHAT cure? There has not _been_ a cure, and there is not one in the foreseeable future. There may not _ever_ be a "cure." Which means all of this cruelty is fruitless. ) It's madness; I can't imagine being sadistic enough to want to experiment on any one of these poor creatures. Murderers are treated with more respect. The injustice is glaringly obvious to anyone with a heart. God is surely looking down on us and scratching his head in sadness and frustration at our ignorance, idiocy, and cruelty.

I recently lost one of my dogs in a terrible, violent way - he was shot by my neighbor and then misdiagnosed by the emergency vet I brought him to and after I took him home, he slowly bled to death. It was a terrible ordeal and I am still grieving for him, especially second guessing what I could have done differently that might have made the difference to have saved his life or at least, spared him pain, because I think he suffered. And this haunts me. I have my other beautiful dogs who I dearly love but I I will always carry this with me I think.

She died of old age but we weren’t there for her in her final hours. Your story, while traumatic, doesn’t sound like you were guilty of anything except loving your dog. I am hearing that our dogs forgive quite easily. Hopefully both you and we can one day realize that they still love us, forgive us and help us focus on the good times instead of the bad ones, which is what they are surely doing. Hugs to you. CRIKEY! That's the 1st time I saw a hcrse with a false leg - I assumed it was impcssible, because they are always killed by a vet, if they break a leg. That is really great!
My little Maltese terrier died 6 weeks back, it was the big 'C'. The vet felt a large liver mass & despite a big surgery & chemc tablets, she died as I held her, 8 weeks later. She was 13 yrs & 5 mths but she was always healthy, with a massive appetite - I assumed I'd get her 2 age 16 at least.
I miss her dreadfully, & cry 4 her every day. I struggle 2 sleep - she was always right beside me, the bed is empty withcut her. I fret that she misses me & is sad - I pray she is at peace. Shelters shud admit pets - they are family. It is cruel that they refuse.
Great Ted Talk. If this sweet guy reads this - I was desperate 4 a sedative, that I cd give my fur-baby if she started 2 die at a time the vet was shut. That sadly is what happehed. She was restless her last 8 hrs alive. I wished I had a pill 2 relax her as she died, & I had asked the vet weeks ahead but they refused. They glibly said I must take her 2 them at that time - but as she struggled the vet was shut.
I have read that a US vet gave a lady a sedative suppsitcry 4 her elderly, termihal pup, & said she cd give him 2 much, because he was dyihg. I wish 2 be aware 4 my future ref - is there a drug I cd have had ready 2 help her as she died, if the vet was shut... Bless U 4 the advice. XXX

I have a 11-13 year old calico cat that I have had since I was 3-4 years old and she was 8-9 weeks. She’s been there for me for a long time, I’ve been there for her. She can take away my chest pains (not 100% sure why I have them), she can help my anxiety and my anxiety attacks, she can make me feel happy when I’m sad. A year and a few weeks ago, she was diagnosed with cancer/tumor. She was given 6 months to 5 years to live. She’s made it past 6 months and is going on a year (as I said). I know she’ll be gone soon, but I’ll forever be grateful. She was my first animal. We’ve had cats (and I’ve been around other animals) before I got her. I’ve always loved animals, but she set my complete love for them.
I’ve experienced loss, from humans and animals. I didn’t know the animals as well as I know my cat, so it didn’t hurt as bad. But I know that once she goes, it’ll hurt. She’ll be pain free tho.

I don’t have a medical condition. I was born and raised with cats. I always wanted to add a dog to the mix. Now I have two cats, a dog, and five glow fish. My dog sleeps at the foot of my bed until I fall asleep. Then he gets on the floor to sleep. My kitties bring great joy and laughter. They break things when they. Most would get upset. I laugh it off. I’d rather they break my things than live a treacherous life on the streets. I’m 66 kids are off living their lives. I don’t have anyone to vent to after a long day at work. I can rant and they know it’s not about them. They come to cuddle and make life better. You don’t need to have an illness to develop a strong bond. You just need a desire to connect with other living creatures. PS I really enjoy my fish and at times wish I could hug them.

I definitely feel like my dogs saved my life when I was in my 20’s. I was dealing with addiction to alcohol and was at my wits end. I was considering ending my life but realized no one in my family/friend circle would adopt my chow chows Sam and Lexi (the loves of my life). It killed me to think of them in a shelter, not being taken care of properly or worse. So I trudged on. Eventually getting sober all because I loved these 2 fur-babies.
Fast forward 31 years and countless dogs later.... I am moving back to New York temporarily (going through a Divorce) all because I have 4 dogs and would never be able to find a place to live with all of them. I’ll wait until I get down to 2 dogs (through natural means) and decide where I’ll live. People have asked “will you get rid of 2 of them” to that I ask...”would you get rid of your kids”. Anyway... I’m so happy to be alone with my dogs again.... without a husband. My husband shoots their dogs at the end of life (he’s a Texas country boy). I have my fur-babies sedated and then euthanized with me helping them the whole way. I also have their ashes buried.2 different worlds... hence...a divorce

One of my dogs has PTSD. Left on the streets with no food, he was hit by a vehicle and suffered multiple broken bones, which remained untreated. The shelter thought him too aggressive to place. I disagreed. With the right human companion, he's sweet, affectionate, and easy to manage. If he was with an unstable human he would struggle more.
It goes both ways. My pets keep me going, they need me. But my strength and stability is important to them, too. Especially to him.

Dogs and cats safe people's life every ay and reduce healthcare costs keeping their owners motivated to "keep-on-going" and keep out of depression and suicide. Yes, they should be admitted in shelters and many parts of healthcare. LTC and nursing homes all should have a few dogs and cats. Thank you for raising your voice in this matter. Hopefully it will be heard and listened to.

Thank you Dr Rustin Moore. I purchased cavapoo two days ago and I feel like I've improved my mood so quickly in the last two days compared to my mood in the last two years... if that makes sense.

Children 7-8 got it right. I like animals more than people. Just lost my dog a week ago and I can't stop crying.

I totally agree that well cared for and loved pets in the home give back love tenfold and are wonderful. However, how many animal lovers eat other animals? Make the connection that all animals have feelings and want to live pain free and be loved just like our beloved pets. Love animals? Stop eating all of them.

Okay, this is extremely anthropocentric which reminds me why I left my job in the veterinary field. I'd rather hear a scientist talk about the power of interspecies bonds, which is the bigger picture. We can learn more by looking at interspecies bonds that don't involve humans and are thus not defined by unhealthy power dynamics.

I love this TED Talk and what's talked about. It just disappoints me that the doctor wants to call out specific breeds and even about talking to a vet about picking out a dog, but doesn't seem to acknowledge issues with some breeding/breeders as well as the amount of dogs that are killed in shelters.

it all stems from there being to many animals out there. shelters only have limited space and if not enough get adopted what can you do? Feel free to go to that shelter and adopt every single one on the chopping block and see how long you can handle that. Well you can't anyways because it is illegal to have over a certain amount of pets*at least where i live don't know about your situation) but still. There is nothing that can be done at this point it is really sad to think about but really not every pet can get their forever home.

@@guitarman0365 Thats why it is crucial vets give their time free 2 spay these pets! There are far 2 mahy litters every year & the babies suffer. Vets are highly paid - they really shd give back!

Juichi I’m sure he’s aware of this and has probably even talked about it somewhere before, but you can only talk about so much in a certain amount of time.

I cant doa ll that complicated math, Its why I didn't make it thru school. I wish it would just list Things on a plate good to feed, or a LIST of things good to feed, maybe even a list of Do Not feed. Far more simple that way. Most of us dog owners aren't highly skilled in percentages & calculations & algebra when feeding our dogs ha
