  • Lonnie will share his “heart to heart” assessment of the climate change we are experiencing, its effects on the world’s highest glaciers, and the reasons he is hopeful for the future.
Dr. Thompson is one of the foremost authorities on paleoclimatology and glaciology. He's led 64 expeditions, conducting ice-core drilling programs in the Polar Regions as well as on the high mountain glaciers in 16 countries. He and his team were the first to develop lightweight solar-powered drilling equipment for the acquisition of histories from ice fields in the high Andes and on Mount Kilimanjaro. The results from these ice-core-derived climate histories have been published in more than 240 articles. He has received numerous awards including the John and Alice Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement and selected as Time magazine and CNN's America's Best in science and medicine. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and was awarded the U.S. National Medal of Science. Lonnie was also elected as a foreign member of the Chinese National Academy of Sciences and received the Benjamin Franklin Medal and the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Unless Govts worldwide enact Laws and also provide incentives on Industry, Business and Manufacturing, nothing will improve the environment, wildlife survival, urban encroachment, and pollution. People care, but greed power & wealth override. Massive public pressure for change is needed.

Key words "mindset change". Yup. If ANY change is to be achieved we have to change our mindset. And if we can just do that we can fix our medical industry, fix our prison system, fix our government, fix our environment, end the disturbance of addiction in society...sooo how do we do that?! Quickly! People are dieing right now.

We HAVE to find a way to stop multi-nationals and resource companies from funding our political parties so that our governments can have the WILL to make the changes we need before it's too late. It's like recycling - industry put the onus on the individual instead of taking care of it themselves on a scale that would count. The scale that counts is governmental and industry and industry will only change if made to or if it is too expensive not to.

We can try to reconstruct the ice capped mountains if we create artificial ice mountain by putting up a frame with plastic pipes with ropes tied to create a skeletal structure on which the ice can form when the icy wind blow on them . This is already done in Ladak in Himalaya . they have created several ice towers or Ice Stupas . even strings across adjacent mountains or just tree branches can form small ice towers . If all mountain climbers make 2-6 such frames . gradually a line of ice towers will be formed and they will grow to great heights in the long run . Since freezing cold winds are flowing always , some frame for precipitating them can solve this problem to a certain extent .

I wonder what happens when we cross the highest avarage global temperature just before the last ice age.
I personally think it's too late to stop global warming and current politics makes any meaningful change impossible. Certain autocratic nations will never sacrifice stability and prosperity in the name of climate, not without a literal revolution.
We need to start preparing for rising sea levels and frequent natural disasters just as much as we are trying to stop global warming.
I feel global warming is inevitable and we are just accelerating it with our industry.
