Around October 2020 in the midst of some particularly crushing lockdown blues, I started to journal daily in order to check in with myself and make sure I wasn't sinking too deep into depression. Like you, prior to then I had kept journals, but I was very inconsistent. When I decided to start journaling more consistently last year, the only rule I had for myself was that I had to write at least one sentence every day, so long as I made sure to do it daily. Prioritizing consistency was likely the reason that I've been able to maintain my journaling habit, and it wasn't long before I completely forgot about my one sentence a day rule and journaling just became a regular part of my day-to-day. Now, about 13 months later, I'm finishing up the last few pages in what will be the 6th notebook I've completed since I started. I hope it proves as rewarding for you as it has for me. Also, one thing I've learned over the past year: if one is as clumsy as I tend to be... waterproof/water resistant ink is a necessity (if you plan on keeping your journals around). I started using a fountain pen that I fill with a waterproof ink and I highly recommend trying it out. Regardless, best of luck on your journaling journey! I'm already thinking about how I can incorporate some of the ideas shared in this video into my journaling. Thanks, and take care
You look so well. Wow!! I totally agree with writing things down oldskool.. If nothing else I find it gets things out of my head and onto paper there's a feeling of relief in that when you have a busy mind😊 it's amazing for looking back on too.. We can't remember everything in our minds.
Great idea Peter. It’s a good thing to have somewhere to plan organise and acknowledge your thoughts and feelings all in one place. Did have a laugh at your Australia diaries!! Good luck with the journaling I’m sure you’ll do well as you seem quite self disciplined! Hope all is good with you and your family.
Hi Peter, good idea. I’ve only been journaling seriously since 2018. I wanted to keep track of life’s highlights and plan my days more effectively. Also, it’s a way of making the best use of my time and since 2019 and covid restrictions, a way of keeping track of this whole global mess. So every day I write down the number of covid infections in my country and city. This reminds me to stay vigilant. I also wear a fitness tracker so I write down my daily steps, active minutes and the amount of sleep that I get. This encourages me to do better. I also write down how I feel when I wake up in the morning - great, good, ok, or bad. I also use the same four categories to write down how well I have eaten that day. My salary has reduced by two thirds in the past year because of covid so I also keep all my receipts and write down how much I’ve spent for the day, which I add up at the end of the month to see how much of a hit my savings have taken. I also write down if I’ve taken any medications or supplements that day. I don’t take any regular prescribed medications but I do take vitamins and coupled with my how do I feel when I wake up tracker I can increase or decrease them in needed. What work I do have is recorded on a monthly calendar and then I do a quick journal page of the days highlights. I think it’s really important in these crazy times to feel as though I actually have control over my own life and destiny.
I hope this works for you, I've tried NLP, CBT, group therapy, talking therapy, self help books and videos with some success trying to sort out all the rubbish going on in my head, but still wonder what it's all about, depression not as bad but still have social anxiety disorder, so tend to live a solitary life, all the best with your journal.
Thanks Clive. There's definitely no obvious solution when it comes to dealing with any intrusive thoughts. It sounds like you've explored lots of different things which is great, and even if it doesn't feel like it I bet you take something from each of those methods. All the best to you.
Hi Peter, I think it's a great idea. I wrote in a journal(Diary) when I was young. Like you it was not very exciting, but I was a kid, so I think I could step it up a notch. lol. I like the idea of writing down things I'm grateful for. Don't laugh, but I want to write down the weather, every year I think I should write down what it was like last year, but I never do. I know most would think how boring or I could look it up, but actually, it's not that easy to find a daily weather history. Anyway, keep us posted on how its going. I might give it a go at keeping a journal, it's a challenge I accept. :)
Hi Cherie. I think writing the weather down is a great idea. Would be interesting to look back and see what the weather was the year before. Enjoy it if you choose to give it a go!
I love to write lyrics a lot of the time because I find that words will come to me throughout the day and so I take a small 20 minute break from work and write them down. I'm usually most in the mood to write around midday. 11 or noon. Best of luck with your journal!
Hi good to see you, got to say gave me a real belly laugh with your Australia journal description, 🤣 but in all seriousness, Thank you ! I spend at least 3 hours usually from approx 1am with my mind doing overtime and it is a complete jumble which then results in starting the day feeling not as fresh as I could be. So I am going to try this and see if putting some order to my thoughts during the day will clear my head at night. Everything’s worth a try and it makes so much sense listening to you describe it I’m feeling quite optimistic about it when it becomes a bit of a routine. Thanks Peter, good luck, good health wishes as always and enjoy your journaling 💪🏻👍🏻
It takes a lot of self discipline to journal and make it worth while. I think you will do great at it Peter I’ve never taken up journaling but I am a good letter writer. At least that’s what I’ve been told. You’re looking like you are feeling great.
Peter ,I was worried about you It’s been ages Please do not disappear again Love to Jenni Journaling is a great idea but I’m not patient enough Happy Holidays from Jordan Hugs
Another good video, thanks Peter. A journal is a great idea, I'll join you, it's something I've been thinking about so you've given me the nudge I needed. Hope you're keeping well, you're looking a bit tired (sorry, nurse alert!) Hope you haven't fallen victim to the 'not covid super cold'...it's grim! Thanks again :)
I have tried and stopped to journal a few times ,it really is a great self help book .I really hope you have more success than I have .😁 I know you will because from what I seen so far you are very strong and determined, keep up the great work
I’ve been meaning to try this since forever. I think there’s a lot of benefits to this. I just wish I could stick to it. It’s great for clearing your mind I think, though. Best of luck with it. Xx
Hello Peter, l do hope you are doing well. I have used a journal at different times in my life. It helped to put my thoughts down on paper. It was very painful stuff that l was going through. After a few years l got rid of them. I didn’t want anyone to ever see how badly l had been feeling and l didn’t like seeing that stuff anymore. All the best .
Sounds a great idea Peter I think I’m going to give it a go.i lost my husband a couple of years ago then my mum in January and sadly my brother last month all you’ve just said makes me think I should do one to put every thing in some sort of order! Thanks peter I really feel inspired. Your looking very well . Take care x❤️
Thanks Marilyn. What a tough time you've had, so sorry to hear that. I hope you find journaling to be a positive experience. Let me know how you get on!
Hi Peter nice to hear how you are , and what are you doing interesting about your journal I have been writing one for years every night sometimes I open up and look what happened a year ago two years ago yes very interesting keep it up looking forward to your next video take care have a good Christmas love to you all Roulla xx
I'm terrible for starting things with good intentions of keeping it going...and failing to do so. I should try this though. I have chronic anxiety brain, have tried Cognitive behavioral therapy like Clive A, with no success. Here's to you and anyone else giving it a go.🙂💯👍
Hi Suzanne. A mixture really. Sometimes I think about things, other times I focus on my surroundings. There's also a third one too, where I do neither and have a completely empty mind and time floats by. Thanks for the question, I might make a video on this!
Hey Pete. Thinking back we just finished a sports science and physiology degree when we went to Australia, so maybe you were doing a journal for nutritional reasons?
Hello Peter a friend of mine a seventh Son of a seventh son and Healer Said if you drink half a cup of honey a day it could help your recovery And Black Bananas because they are Full of penicillin. Hope this helps
Gosh, Peter, I think what you've achieved since your cancer diagnosis is wonderful. You look so strong and robust! Thanks for being so constructive.

Great! I love to journal or brain dump as I call it. So good for anxiety!
Definitely. Very underestimated by a lot of people who could benefit I think.

That's great. It sounds like you've really dialled in to your own method of what journaling works for you. Some good ideas. Thanks for sharing!

I'm wondering what you think about when you run. Do you focus on what's around you or does your mind wander around?
Hi Suzanne. A mixture really. Sometimes I think about things, other times I focus on my surroundings. There's also a third one too, where I do neither and have a completely empty mind and time floats by. Thanks for the question, I might make a video on this!

Could be right. Would have been good to have written something more interesting. Although some of the stuff we cooked and ate was interesting I guess!
