Hi, I'm a product manager myself, I work at a Fintech. Your video is the best " A day in the life of a PM" that I have seen on TH-cam. Keep the good work up.
Best day in the life video I watch. Gave great insight into what a product manager does, especially for aspiring PMs like moi! And those handstands were incredible.
Loved your video (especially the arial practice in your gym session, I really enjoy tumbling and floor work)! I am in my 3rd month as a Jr PM (my first role in tech) and this was so cool to see. My company is a mid-late stage startup so seeing your flows + systems helps alot with my small team of 3 PMs. I have a few video requests: - I'd love to hear more about the analytics tools/tools in general that make your job easier and how you use them. - Steps you take prior to a new product initiative (new feature OR enhancing existing) - How to ask the right questions to drive product development - Your career goals Thanks for your amazing content! My orange kitty also hangs out with me on my computer all day
Thanks for your video. I'm founder transitioning into PM. As a founder of an early stage startup i performed too many tasks as i was wearing multiple hats. But i discovered PM and tasks related to it was the ones i've really enjoyed. Thanks again. You've got one more suscriber.
Hi Kevin! Nice to meet you! That's so cool that you've been a founder and are now transitioning to product. Who knows, product might just help you be a founder for another company in the future! Thanks for subscribing :)
@@AlisaHaman Absolutely. Haha!...Hope you will keep posting content about PM like this so we can know how things work from the inside. Like different types of PM, how to think like a PM. PM in software vs hardware. Things like that. Also stories from people transitioning, as i've checked your Linkedin profile and it seems like you came from a different pro background before joining product. Anyway, I'm just giving ideas-- you can add them into your backlog lol! Invited sent on Linkedin. Je te souhaite Bon courage pour la suite! :-)
Hi! I just started working as Product Manager and came across your videos. It's amazing to see someone with morning work flow as similar as mine (starting at 9am with standup meeting along with product & continued with tech team). Love your video! 😆
Enjoyed your video! So refreshing to see a "Day in The Life" that is not from a content creator POV. I've always been interested in PM roles -- thanks for sharing the flow of your day :)
Hey Alisa- this was incredibly helpful! I’m a new Product Owner and I’ve really been struggling with figuring out how to work with my team and how to do my role well. Would love more of your insight if you ever have time to talk! You’re so inspiring! Hope to hear from you!! :)
As a newly minted Product Owner, like you, Alisa, I also switch on my laptop at 8:30, and just go over the emails and schedule for the day. At 9, I have a catch up call with folks from another time zone. At 10:30, I’ve a daily stand up with my scrum team, and after 1 pm my day becomes a bit more hectic with teams from other time zones logging in to work so a lot of meetings there, until 5:30 when I log off!
This is one of the best videos I have watched about a Day in the life of a PM. Thanks a lot for sharing! I have a question for you: How can I find out if a career in Product Management is good for me?
I'm so happy you found it helpful!! That's a great question - I would recommend reading a couple product management books (Inspired, Hooked... etc.) and possibly attending a ProductCon virtual event (they are free, and you can find it by just Googling ProductCon). Those are low-investment ways to figure out if the career path is interesting for you!
Thank you so much for sharing your day with us! Very insightful. Is there (or will it be) a video wherr you show us how you build a roadmap? Thank you!
when it comes to modals & popups I usually make a metaphorical scenario going like this: imagine you are in the supermarket looking at a shelf in search for something and out of nowhere someone suddenly holds a big banner directly in your face..
I’m feeling very inspired to transition my career solely because of this video so thank you for this! Question: outside of the emergency situation or the very few evening obligations, do you find yourself being concerned about your product once you close your laptop? Rather, how much work are you “taking home” so to speak, outside of work hours?
I'm last year student and now i'm taking a Product Management bootcamp for 7 month, i hope after finish my bootcamp program i can become pm ,maybe starting as internship or associate, your video motivated me😁
Thank you for the great video! I am also a passionate individual and a product enthusiast who always strives to learn new skills and take challenging opportunities and I am keen and passionate to make a career in product management.
Really insightful video! I just had one question - How easy or difficult it is to transition from a dev role to PM! !? Also is there any specific career path that needs to be followed? - A fresher in the Tech industry.
I'm happy it was insightful! Devs often are able to transition into PM roles if they are interested in strategy and building customer empathy, and are ready to step back a bit in execution! Overall, going from a developer to a product manager role is a pretty common career path!
Really helpful video, Alisa! Thank you for this! 💗 Just have a question-how many user sessions do you watch in Fullstory for each feature, before you consider a certain user behaviour to be a big concern? Thanks in advance!
I'm so happy it was helpful!!! I generally watch enough so that a theme starts to develop... sometimes that can be in just seven or eight sessions, but in other instances where it's less clear, it could take a lot more!
Hi Alisa! I know this video is old, but I’m a teacher looking to transition out of the classroom. I’m currently just researching into different career paths. I would love to know how you got into product management and what prior experience you would need for a role like this? Thanks in advance! 💕
Great insight! What do I need to be able to do data analysis? Like where do I start? Any kind of source recommendations like books or online courses? I'm a developer attempting to move to PM role. Thanks
Really helpful video, Alisa! Thank you for this! 💗 Just have a question-how many user sessions do you watch in Fullstory for a certain feature, before you consider the data to be a big concern? Thanks in advance!
I'm so happy it was helpful! And it depends - I usually keep watching until I get a consistent theme. Sometimes, all it takes is 6-7 sessions with a consistent problem for me to take action. In other cases, I may not start to see a consistent theme or pattern until I watch 20 sessions!
Thank u so much for the video! It's really helpful :) I have a question concerning this path, I don't know which degree should I major in, to become a PM. Do I need a STEM degree or just a Business degree while learning other skills?
I'm so happy it was helpful! There isn't really one degree that all PM's need - PM's come from all sorts of backgrounds! I'd say having a business degree and then maybe taking one or two coding classes would be a great foundation.
Yes that's also helpful! I recommend doing a little practice in Figma (where you can get a free license, and there are tons of YT tutorials for Figma)!
This was so well put together and very helpful; thank you so much, Alisa :) I will be pursuing an MBA and would like to pivot from finance to PM. What are important PM skills (hard and soft) in your opinion? (I am looking for books, certifications, courses that might help).
I'm so happy it was helpful! That's fantastic that you're making the switch to product management. I would say product management requires a combination of strategic skills, empathy and execution (project management). I would recommend reading Inspired by Marty Cagan, which really outlines what the product manager role is, and why it's so important! I hope this helps :)
I really want to go for this job but I am scared there'll be mathematics in the examinations so you know I am not so good with maths like we don't go together so I am a little nervous ( so did u have to answer some mathematics problems when you were giving exams for this job...?)
Great question. I think some FAANG interviews do ask estimation questions which can be tricky - I highly recommend reading Cracking the PM Interview for those - they provide a really good way of solving those questions. I wouldn't say those estimation questions are super common outside of FAANG companies - I have never run into one in my interviewing experience!
Hello Alisa. Thank you for your video. I am Raheemah, transitioning from business strategy into product management. It feels a lot similar although there are some technical aspects. Any tips you could give would be highly appreciated. Thank you.
Great video, and love your cat! :) I am currently a product specialist and very interested in the tool you are using to assess the product utilization of your clients. Our clients are great about providing feedback, but I think this would give us a deeper look at the adoption patterns! Also, out of curiosity have you taken any specific classes or certifications since becoming a product manager to develop certain skills? I think being a PM is likely next in my career path and I'd be interested to learn how you prepared for the role. Thank you, and looking forward to more videos!
I'm happy you liked the video (and my cat 😺)! Yes you should definitely check out those tools! And I have taken pragmatic marketing, a SQL course, basic intro to Java and a design thinking training since becoming a PM. I think those were really helpful (though they can be costly). I think reading books is a great alternative (I love starting with Inspired by Marty Cagan and Cracking the PM Interview). TH-cam also has some really informative content! Also, sounds like if you are a product specialist, you are already on the right path to product management! Good luck on your future PM career :)
