The hummer is a bad example of hp per liter. I think it uses a GM 6.5 diesel which was designed in the early 90s. Diesel don't have strong hp as it is and it was much worse back then. It's about torque. That think loaded going uphill would be a beast and needs little maintenance for what it does

The hummer lost because there wasn’t any source of oil ahead.
The HMMWV was created for the battlefield. HP is not important, tongue is much more. That truck is probably older than many of us in the comment section. It is a monster and really easy to drive. However the military version is tricky and even though the truck was designed in the 70s this truck after 45 years is still one of the main character on the battlefields.
@@MrCooper83 IK. Everyone talks about how 197HP from a 6.5L turbocharged diesel is underpowered, but people forget to mention the purpose of this vehicle. It has 583nm of raw torque to maneuver the battlefield. That hummer was made to run no matter what. It has 2 fuel tanks, lifted/centered disk brakes and powertrain for maximum ground clearance. Considering that, wouldn’t be surprised it weighs 3.6 tons.

The answer is simple: American engineering
It's from the 1980s I believe, it's literally the Humvee used by the military for civilians. Horsepower wasn't the focus it was torque that they needed. So it kind of makes sense for a 40 year old military truck.
Also, Detroit diesel made some pretty lousy engines.

My first time seeing a 6.5L turbo V8 lost by a 1.5L 4 cylinder 😂
Doesn't matter how big the engine is. With those extra 5 liters, it only gets another 97hp. And it also weigh 2000lbs more. The Hummer's not meant to be raced.
The American Diesel Engine is crap, like out of the early 70s.
It neither has much HP, nor much torque.
You get the same power/torque out of a modern 2L 4cyl Diesel.
But that thing may be more reliable and better suits it's job.
If you want a fast Hummer, swap the engine for the 420CDI V8 from the old Mercedes E-Class. That thing would be gone literally.
Also the 4 Speed Auto gearbox is made for trucks, takes hours to change gear. No chance to a manual.
(Yes I know the Hummer is not meant to be a racecar, it does it's job kinda good, which isn't speeding on Afghanistan Highways. ^^)

The Hummer can technically go all roads. But you'll have to drop it off a plane on that road because if you go there in it by itself then it will take an entire lifetime to reach there. Whereas the Jimny can't go on all roads but atleast it can reach them in a reasonable time.
