It’s time to see if a Suzuki Jimny can take down an 80s legend - the Peugeot 205 GTI!
However, this isn’t just a simple Jimny v 205 GTI drag race. You see, along with Mat’s own Jimny, we have also been lent Twisted Automotive’s turbocharged Jimny!
So let’s see how the three compare. Starting with the regular Jimny, it’s powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine that can produce 101hp and 130Nm of torque. It weighs in at 1,035kg, it’s equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and when new it costs around £20,000. In this instance, we’ll be using rear-wheel drive only.
Alongside it, we have the Twisted Jimny. It has the same 1.5-litre 4-cylinder as the stock Jimny, but thanks to the addition of the turbo, it can produce 165hp and 195Nm! However that’s not all that’s changed - there are a number of other upgrades including a lift kit, uprated suspension and uprated dampers. What’s more, the interior now comes plastered in leather and Alcantara to make it feel like a mini G63! But all of these upgrades come at a cost, with this particular Jimny rolling up with a £60,000 price tag!!
Then finally we have the mini hot hatch hero, the Peugeot 205 GTI. It packs a 1.9-litre turbo that can deliver 122hp and 161Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox, and it tips the scales at just 860kg. In 2023, this car's valued at around £25,000.
So will the turbocharged Jimny snatch the win? Or could the '80s legend clinch it? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Matt nearly money shifted on the first run 😂 Did you notice the reverse light flicker 😮
Bounced off reverse 😂😂😂
😂Dude
@@paulchambers6657Hahaha!😅
😂Hes gone and double clutched it after the initial 'Gate refusal' and the gearbox has just about stayed out of reverse even with the Reverse light switch activated at a decent old speed hahaha. Thus is proof Matt hasnt got a clue how to drive a manual. Its a good job Suzuki have done their R&D on that drivetrain becuase i recently saw two vids of someone finding reverse in a newer porsche 911 with the manual and BMW with a manual managing to blow the entire gearbag clean out the things with high speed reverse money shift. BTW i know exactly what hes did done i know that gearbox and its bigger brother thats the old proper 5 speed Grand Vitara and Toyota LC and Isuzu 4x4s. It doesnt like being pushed sideways to find a gear, its a stirry box so if you are quick shifting in it you need to go diagonal direction and not force it sideways then up or down like a forced shift that you rely on the gate to snick the gear home. Hes been ramming it the wrong way and its locked him out.
@7:42 Well spotted!
16:50 that 205 downshift engine brake was awsome
Yep. Kinda reminded me a lot to 205 T16 Evo2.
Sam is absolutely amazing with manual cars his gear shifting is so smooth🥵
Sam always nailed those.

Rented a 1.9 205 GTi for a weekend in the late 80s and drove it some distance including a stretch of very winding road, what a blast. Will never forget that experience.
205 GTi 1.9L has 165bhp.
@@purwantiallan5089and probably weighs less then a ton? I'd say that's a proper go kart. It's something like the GR Yaris of the 80s.
@@purwantiallan5089 nope 130
@@purwantiallan5089no it doent. Why do you spam this channel with wrong info? the 205 never came with a 16v engine it was a 1.6 or 1.9 8v at very most 130bhp, even if you swapped them to carbs the twin webbers they got about 144bhp. The 16v engine that had 155-160bhp was from the 405 it was called the Mi16 engine and a lot of people grabbed them out of bashed and scrap 405s and put them in the 205s as they slotted right in minimal fuss next to no welding all aftermarket engine mounts etc so became a popular upgrade on them. Not one 1.6 or 1.9 variant of 205 was ever fitted with the Mi16 160bhp lump so quit talking tripe man.
@@joshuaminke6629if you were lucky the 1.9 done 128 on a dyno. Was 123-125 usually. These kids on here talking tripe quoting the Mi16 or 2.0 Gti6 16v engine bhp figures. Even the Mi16 i had in my 205 (originaly from a crashed 405 Mi16) was 150bhp on the dyno back then i remeber it because it was barely more than my Astra GTE 16v which was showing 140bhp.
"You'll always win, if you race yourself won't cha" is quote of the decade.
It's a profound statement!😅

The question in the 70's was'do you race it'?

Sam was certainly giving the engine braking a work out when he did the brake test.👍
He always wins the brake test in a manual car, he abuses the engine braking haha
a 205 gti never fails to look good 👏
@@FYMASMD look at your face.
Peugeot 205 GTi imo only have 200bhp.
That's ugly! How do you see it looking good, are you its mother?
True. Looks very good.
Looks trash
You should do a drag race with all GTI's Peugeot has ever produced, such as 205 GTI, 206 GTI/RC, 306 GTI, 309 GTI and maybe also the 208 and 308 GTI but it would be lovely to see the GTI of the 80's and 90's race together
Don't forget the 106 GTi
Throw in the CTI for good measure too...
1.9 GTI was always 8 valves, never 16 valves. Many dropped in the engine from the 309 GTI 16V, or 405MI16
100% older non CAT 1.9,s where 130 BHP newer versions strangled somewhat
Many 405Mi16 and BX GTI 16v had their engines removed to put in 205 rally cars
@@chrisattwood8701 I have 7 mi16 engines in my shed, with ecu's and looms haha. I'm a hoarder :D
Exactly, I still got the non Cat Version which was beefier then the 122 BHP Version. An Quaife Torsen Diff does also avoid the unnecessary wheel spin.

Hell yes. But it should've been a drag race between Nissan 300ZX, Peugeot 206, and Toyota GR86 RACING 2013.
200 Kg is a *lot* in those power ranges.
Also, regarding that last activity, Matt seems to have forgotten what the 205 was actually famous for. :)
Yes, but 40hp difference is a lot too.

@@shanginadildoyep. Shu Uchida should be the one to become Carwow's new presenter.
Those 205 wheels are still gorgeous !
The 16valve engine wasn't actually available in the 205, it was in the 405 mi16, of which sadly many were pillaged for the engine and then scrapped to put the engine into a 205. The 405mi16 is a much rarer car than the 205 gti because of that.
Sam wanted to go off road so badly but obviously didn't out of respect to the car's owner 😂😂

The 205 gti, 1.6 and 1.9 is a 8 valves, (XU9JA); the 16v version of the 1.9 was released in the 309 gti 16 & 405 mi16 (XU9J*4*) but not in the 205 gti

Who would have thought that this would turn out to be one of the funniest drag races on the channel!? God, I wish Mat and his team did Top Gear!!!
Did Matt go into reverse for a second at 7:48?
😂tried too. Double clutched it too, near abouts overuled the original "gate refusal" and got far enough into the reverse lockout that the reverse light came on hahaha. Its a good job Suzuki made a proper drivetrain as ive seen a lot of modern cars money shift a reverse and just ring the teeth clean out the thing before finding a false nuteral or blowing the entire gearbox and flywheel and crank apart like i seen in two recent vids of newer but manual BMW and Porker 911. Can name the worst offender of that but so i dont get my comment taken down its the a certain diesel manual gearbox used for GOLF-ing it found its way into various other VAJ or maybe the J in that abbreviation was a G who knows.. they then fitted it to their GTI and 'R' models etc and it had a wee yellow star thing as a bypass valve in it that everyone took out. Can you tell what it is yet😂
Yeah, very close to a money shift. Would have been brutal doing that to someone else's car!
Sam did justice to the shifting.. amazing power shifts…
Amazing amazing old school racer ♠️♥️😎
These drag races are just getting funnier and better, love it!!
You can see sam’s real racing driver skills when it comes to brake test with manual cars
He using engine breaking to slow the car along with the breaks
I miss my 1.9 GTI. First proper hot hatch I owned. Not particularly fast but it didn't need to be. Could put a smile on your face on any B road without breaking the speed limit.
the 1.9 with the webber carb swap was fast dude so was my Mi16 swapped one. Took a tuned Sierra/Escort cosworth to beat my mi16 swapped 205. It wasted all the usual 2.0 16v stuff like Astra GTE like they were nothing and was beating Cavy and Calibra Turbos. Tell you what the mi16 205 could hang with neck and neck if you remember the rover 400 and 600s with the T series engine. Yeah that was about the same. They were fast cars dude like i said it took a cossie to take down a well tuned golf mk2 gti or 205Gti even on carb swap
I absolutely love how we went from faceless racing driver Sam, to "One of the boys, Sam" 😂
“You’ll always win, if you race yourself, won’t cha.” that goes on my IG bio, thanks racing driver Sam 😂😂

Jimny Tuned has $100.000 price tag. On par with Cappucino HP Tuned.
The 4 door version of jimney is just 13k in india
you want the older Grand Vitara a great one waa the latter proper 4x4 one in UK was sold 06 till 09. The ones after looked simmilar but became more SUV than 4x4. The best offroad Suzuki Vehicle there is is 06 GV it decimates Jimnys but needs bigger tyres and 50mm lift kit for £450-800 for the best lift kits including new shocks. The older GV is much more refined than Jimny it does 100mph motorway no sweat even on big offroad tyres and has massively more towing capability so 2.2-2.5ton compared to a ton.
