7:40 I know electric motors can provide 100% of torque at 1rpm...but I've never seen anything that size accelerate up a hill like that, that quick before. That's crazy impressive
EVs are awesome now, and becoming better and better quickly. People who hate EVs just because it is an EV have some type of cognitive dissonance, and are stuck with what they were like back when Smart Phones were a thing. The batteries are getting lighter, holding more charge, charging faster, last longer, and cheaper. Honestly the only thing that will be holding them back is charging stations. Yet if you own a home? Investing in some renewable, plus an electric car is just one of the best things you can do. Unless you're one of those people who apparently need to drive hundreds of miles without stopping all the time.
Military hummers didn't have door locks. Or at least none I ever drove. The only thing they had was a cable secured to the floor on one end with a loop on the free end, and "locking" the hummer meant looping the cable through the steering wheel and using an ordinary padlock to secure it.
I had no idea Justin was in the National Guard! Thank you for your service to this country man! I really respect and appreciate the sacrifices you’ve made to protect our country!
11,000 pounds does sound crazy that’s because it’s too good to be true. I hate to break it to you but these guys don’t know Jack squat about cars it’s 1100 pounds not 11,000 pounds.
That h1 held up like a BEAST in the tug of war to the EV’s 11.5K of torque. That being said, with the transmission in low, first gear, plus transfer case, plus diffs and portal axles works out to about a 20.75:1 ratio in first gear low, which turns that 520 lb-ft of the engine to a whopping 10,782 lb-ft of torque to the wheel of that H1, which is nothing to scoff at
@@failranch9542 It would really end up a battle of grip. The amount of torque you can put down is limited by the surface, the wheels, and the weight of the vehicle. And here being heavy really helps! So in this case it's likely the heavier vehicle would win. Well airing down the wheels would also help, and I'm pretty sure the H1 retained that function from it's military predecessor. I have no idea about the electric version though.
@@blahorgaslisk7763about EV it already has a traction control to not brake the ev motors. Thats why most ev cars launch almost instantaneously with barely tyre smoke and reach high speeds in turns, adding the acceleration
@@matthewmondragon2074 Yes and if you want to play you will want the option to turn all of that off. You want to smoke the tires and do doughnuts! And it could possibly help when they tried the tug of war. But you are perfectly correct that you want the traction control turned on during normal use. In fact early electrical cars were known to "eat" tires as they had so much torque they tended to always break loose when starting. So traction control is more or less needed or they become very expensive to drive, especially modern versions with several hundred HP at the wheels.
one of the really popular upgrades to the H1 is a modern 6.6 duramax and the 10 speed that brings the power and fuel economy more inline with modern standards. 445hp, 910lbft, and 16ish mpg. Suddenly the H1 is a competent road vehicle again
My lb7 gets way better fuel milage than my l5p especially when towing or in cold weather because of the dpf system and an lb7 can make around 500hp/1000tq with just a tune
When I was in the Army we did absolutely insane stuff in Humvees. Some of the most intense off-road stuff ever with that standard power plant. Even saw one get hit by a Russian BMP. The track fell off of the BMP but the hummer drove away on the run flat. The Russian TC was “disciplining” the driver as we cleared the intersection😂

We did also take a diesel generator just in case we had to recharge, but luckily we didn't have to use.
There’s still going to be maintenance, there’s still cooling liquid for the batteries, you still have suspension, you’ll just be working on an electric motor or some technological component rather than changing a mechanical part.
Incredible to see how much this channel has grown. Love the video, keep the good content coming! I also find it funny how the H1 went from - Super Slow - Old - Gas Guzzler to now being - Super fast - new - No gas needed
Man, that H1 Alpha brings back a core memory of mine. My aunt and uncle were pretty well off, and had an H1 Alpha. I remember visiting them shortly after turning 18, and we took a trip to a massive offroad park in the North East. They let me drive it, so much fun...until I went up a steep hill and let off the gas against the advice of my aunt before we crested the hill and we slid back until we hit a tree 🙃
Tug-of-wars are always fun to see, but its important to remember that power is rarely the determining factor in them. Tesla did a demo where they showed the Cybertruck tugging away an F150 while the Ford just spun its tires, for instance. With no tire grip, of _course_ the Ford wouldn't move the Cybertruck. Vehicle weight and tire grip matter more than power. Which is why the H1 was spinning its tires. Still fun to see, though!
Justin is amazing. Thank you for hiring this man. Litterally every hostnis fantastic and has their own entertaining and interesting personality. GO JUSTIN!
As an 11H anti-tanker in the Army, I’m taking the old school Humvee every time. Never failed me in 4 combat operations and I took out a lot of tanks, anti-aircraft vehicles and personnel carriers in my Humvee over the years. I know it can handle having a Tow System, .50 cal or MARK-19 mounted in it for years at a time. Couldn’t trust something all electric and then have it not power up in a critical moment.
I did a few WTF pulls last year during a Hummer EV benchmarking session. When I got out of the car, my feet felt like jelly, like if I had just gotten off of an extreme roller coaster. That thing is sick.
@@theupscriber65 Most H1 owners do. The engine and transmission are out of a Chevy Silverado 2500. The differentials are based on the old AMC 20. The transfer case is related to one used by Jeep. The gauges and switches are commercial truck parts. The only specialized parts are the axles and portals but there is no shortage of Humvee parts. They're not much more complicated than a Silverado and they're only bought by enthusiasts at this point.
Thank you for your service Justin! Great video guys! That H1 somehow doesn't even look too outdated when it comes to the interior, don't know if that says a lot about current cars, or I'm just used to my 20 year old shitbox cars lol
Practicality rarely loses its luster and few things inspire confidence like three knob HVAC and rocker switches in panels that can be unscrewed and serviced often without leaving the driver seat.
A LOT of people think that civilian HUMMERs were discontinued since their sales sucked but that’s not true. The sales were doing great but the government, as terms of the bailouts wanted GM to get rid of several brands and one had to be HUMMER due to its gas guzzler persona basically. At this time the US was doing a lot towards environmental causes, getting rid of gas guzzlers was something they took seriously, remember Cash for Clunkers? So, the H3 was never intended to save the brand, just increase sales and it did that. The Bailout Terms & Conditions and HUMMER sales figures can all be found online. I personally don’t think the H3 should ever have been made, had they gone the route of the HX, it would have become more of a premium model.
My earliest memories are in an h1 my father was a mechanic at one of the few hummer dealerships in the late 90s and early 2000s he used to regularly come home in h1s, we even met a few celebrities such as coolio because my dad fixed them. Someday I’d love to have an h1
I used to work at the Humvee/H1 assembly plant. The test track has a hill on it that all you can see is sky as you drive up it. One of the tests is to drive halfway up the hill, come to a full stop, leave the truck in gear, and then let off the brake. The drivetrain of the trucks will hold them on this hill without any throttle or brake applied. Also, the Humvee is definitely not designed for full-size adults. There were certain variants I couldn't even get in. I can't imagine trying to get in one while wearing all your gear. Humvees are also remarkably short from front to rear. My car was three feet longer than the Humvees from bumper to bumper. Wheelbase was super long, though. This combo was obviously chosen to give great approach angles.
I love the cool stuff some "truck" EVs bring to the table - but I need to see them operate in northern Wyoming in winter, below zero,, far from a plug in before we replace the family pickup.
I'm sure the EV is used solely by people who will never take it off road. Sadly, it will become a pavement princess. I'm all for electric vehicles but when off roading I'm much more in favor of the H1.
In iraq we were a stryker unit but there were certain roads we couldnt go down unless we were in a humvee so we got one and put mine rollers on it and it was up to a team leader (which was me) and one of his guys to drive it as fast as we could down backroads and got hit with ieds twice, i have a great appreciation for the humvee for saving us both times
Would have been fun to see these cars on a real offroad course and not just a hill climb that can be done in a Subaru outback. Rally and 0-60 were obviously going to be won by the EV.
You guys SO should have found an OG H1 hummer… one that still had gulf war Saudi sand in the battery box, with a 6.2 diesel (no turbo) and a 3 speed TH400 trans… THAT would have been cool! Oh yeah, the large flat place the gunner stands on, that is the trans tunnel and part of the backbone of the body. Great episode… I didn’t realize Justin had service time under his belt… from one vet to another Justin… thank you.
Those H1s are so dope. When i was younger. Around maybe 2000-2001 . My cousin and me were able to drive around my uncle’s bosses H1 . The guy is the owner of general mills basically. It was so crazy being in. Trying to hand things to the driver. Was a stretch and a half. I wanna say he paid well over a 100 k which back then was crazy money. It had all the goodies front and back chrome winches. Definitely caught every eye.
I have, according to a lot of people, questionable taste in design, but to me the H1 was the only "real" Hummer. The H2 and H3 were just glorified trucks. They lacked the brutal look and feel of the H1 which was what Hummer was all about. If I wanted a truck or general offroad vehicle there were a lot of options that weren't Hummer. The big mistake there was to think that their potential customers wanted a conventional truck. What made the customers pay for a Hummer was the military heritage. Without that they were not anywhere near as interesting. Certainly not interesting enough for people to pay a huge premium for the name.
@@blahorgaslisk7763 ya the difference between the H1 and H2 was basically One was a Hummer. And the other was a joke lol. That got horrible gas mileage. But made you look hella cool back in the day lol.

I absolutely love that the electric Humvee exists in all its absurd, inefficient glory. The one I’d choose every single time, though, is the H1. That’s the one that moves me and I love it.
So something that is special about the humvees are the hubs. Each hub has a plentary gear set in it that is to help with the torque needed for the wild loads they expect the thing to pull.
You guys also need to talk about how heavy the new H1 is. It's prone destroy more trails because of a sheer weight of the vehicle combined with the torque delivers.
It's obscenely heavy, honestly should require a specialized license to drive on the street. We need to start implementing weight based speed limits like we do for comercial trucks, these things are bound to kill people.
@@TowerCrisis In Germany, you`d actually need a special freight truck license for it since its over 7700 lb lol. Nobody except actual truck drivers really has these
I am a petrolhead through and through. I live and breathe petrol. But there is no denying the rise of the electric performance cars. That Hummer EV is a beast of a machine. Well done!
It's a show pony, that's it. You can't improve them unless you want to buy a whole new engine. They're quick, but they're not fast. 0-60 is a beautiful number, but they get beat out by gassers time and time again in the 1/4 mile. EV battery life is what? 9 years? To a non-motorhead it's the future, to someone who actually knows cars its just fad that'll die out within a few years
@@derpyduck5088I don’t think its a fad, its too popular and too much money has been pumped into it, i think instead, Ev’s will improve as they currently are. The capabilities of the battery will grow as time passes, wether its a smartphone company that releases the technology or whatever. To a non motorhead, the 0-60 time is more important than the top speed. you barely ever go top speed on the road and especially not for long distances, whereas fast acceleration has more uses (overtaking merging etc). I’m no EV fan but in 10 years time i feel as though it would make sense to own a petrol car over and ev one for commuting and such.
I worked for a Canadian oilfield company 20 years ago that outfitted us with H1s for the job. It was a blunder. Too wide for the cutlines, no chance of tight turning in tight spaces, uncomfortable as F... We were all happy to get on the quad or snowmobile after the ride to the job site. Prior to this we ran around in modified Suburbans and they far out-preformed the H1s we were "blessed" with
How much HP, and even torque to a degree, is meaningless in a tug of war. The H1 would have either 3.08 or 2.83 diff gears and the portal hubs double that with another 2:1 reduction at the wheels.
I don’t hate electric vehicles, or anything, but I feel like this series of tests has been catered to the ev. If I were you guys, I would do a side-by-side range test, repairability test, storage capacity, and which one gets the most attention which I think would just be a bonus. It could be fun.
Military has JLTV’s now, and as a mechanic, I had just started getting to know the HMMWV, and now I gotta learn a whole new vehicle with a lot more electronics
what definith a hummer? if not for its absurdness, massivity, and thirsty nature, a hummer it would not be. all jokes aside, thats why the hummer ev is a "real hummer. the hummer stopped being a military vehicles since the h2, the whole purpose of it was based on its name, its size, and its absurdness and i think the hummer ev is more of a hummer than any hummer made before it, besides the original military hummer, and the maybe original street legal hummer. it fits every qualification for a hummer. its bigger than any hummer before it, its more powerful than any hummer before it, and its more insane and wild than any hummer made before it. The only thing its missing is drinking dino juice instead of electron soup not being based on a millitaty vehicle. besides that, this thing has every right to be called a hummer.
The Hummer EV is insane, got a chance to drive it briefly through work and my god it goes. Gotta love being one of the few people in Australia to drive it ;D
I would've liked to see the H1 alpha driven as hard as the ev. Cause that og H1 can move. I think Justin's training kicked in and he kept it a little more controlled
The H1 Alpha is 4-5 times faster than the OG HMMWV(6.2 NA version with the turbo 400 trans) as those in most cases would never reach 60mph and those that could would take almost a full 60 seconds if not more to reach it. Spent 11 years working on them and would take a OG HMMWV over the EV version any day.
I want to see these new Hummer EVs deployed in combat... "Excuse me Mr. Bad Guy, I need to just plug this into my portable diesel generator for the next 12 hours to make my getaway, hold please😅"
oh man, no water crossing test? Great video but that would be fun to see. I have a marine corp Humvee that has the water fording kit so it can be submerged in 6' of water and still run without issue. Out of my vehicles, this one def gets the attention. Slow but a blast to drive for sure!

Military hummers didn't have door locks. Or at least none I ever drove. The only thing they had was a cable secured to the floor on one end with a loop on the free end, and "locking" the hummer meant looping the cable through the steering wheel and using an ordinary padlock to secure it.
I need more of this type of content. The giggles at around 7:40 is what i am here for, grown men enjoying their jobs and sharing it with us 😊

That h1 held up like a BEAST in the tug of war to the EV’s 11.5K of torque.
That being said, with the transmission in low, first gear, plus transfer case, plus diffs and portal axles works out to about a 20.75:1 ratio in first gear low, which turns that 520 lb-ft of the engine to a whopping 10,782 lb-ft of torque to the wheel of that H1, which is nothing to scoff at
Yeah people forget that. Gearbox will make all the torque you want.
@@blahorgaslisk7763the ev is heavier than the h1. It's 1100tq numbers are straight bs or flawed
one of the really popular upgrades to the H1 is a modern 6.6 duramax and the 10 speed that brings the power and fuel economy more inline with modern standards. 445hp, 910lbft, and 16ish mpg. Suddenly the H1 is a competent road vehicle again
Albeit one that handles very badly and has questionable braking…
@unconventionalideas5683 name me a heavy duty truck that has good breaking or handling, I'm waiting
@@james2042
I get what you’re saying but the electric hummer in this video actually seems to do pretty good at both of those things lol
@SquiDragon the hummer ev has okay handling because of 4 wheel steer and has awful braking per actual brake test that are very reminiscent of the H1.
I love the true joy and enthusiasm, just all around energy on the faces of all the donut lads. Just true car guy doing real car things and enjoying the hell out of it. James' passion was what got me hooked in the beginning. Then all the new faces and the all around love for what they were all doing kept me here. Thank you for all the wonderful content. I really appreciate all you gents do. Side note, we took a hummer EV out elk hunting in the San Carlos reservation last season. Wonderful truck, blew my mind. I didn't expect all that. We did also take a diesel generator just in case we had to recharge, but luckily we didn't have to use.
There’s still going to be maintenance, there’s still cooling liquid for the batteries, you still have suspension, you’ll just be working on an electric motor or some technological component rather than changing a mechanical part.
The giggling during the EV speed run was contagious
Also Jer's face and looking around like the cops were right behind him

Didn't help that the ford that they used in the video was 4×2 and already fitted in loose dirt
Justin is amazing. Thank you for hiring this man.

You should have deflated the tires on the H1 so you got more grip. Use all the potential in that old truck :))

As a dude who dailies a '94 K1500, theres not much out of newer cars that I really want. More power would be nice, but that's about it.
I love how giddy Justin and Jeremiah get in this video. Two of my favorite people on TH-cam.
My earliest memories are in an h1 my father was a mechanic at one of the few hummer dealerships in the late 90s and early 2000s he used to regularly come home in h1s, we even met a few celebrities such as coolio because my dad fixed them. Someday I’d love to have an h1
I did not realize Justin was in the military…Thank you for your service!
The new hummer is sick but the H1 will always be one of my favorite vehicles ever
They never get old
Big thanks to Justin for his service ❤❤. You are a hero 🙌
I would like to see them doing test again in 10-20 years with the same cars😂😊
The electric one won't be working then lmao
I'd like to see a 500 mile race. My guess is ev will take a few days while diesel does it in less than 12 hrs.
Justin should be in more videos. Cool dude

Ya know, this is the epitome of a Donut video. Please do more of these 😢, you guys are doing great.

Never understood what people saw in Lorentzo Lamas, though I guess he might have wet a few panties among the girls back then. It was the 90's. The age of boy bands, the rise of the female supermodels as well as Marcus Schenkberg and Fabio.
I think the 4 wheel steering was making the hummer EV feel less wide. It was cool to see it in action.

That’s not a humvee that’s a gmc electric truck
Weighing 10k pounds and instant torque from 1000 hp, it's a great vehicle to drive through protestors
Shoutout to hidef the chef in the back of the ev humvee
So something that is special about the humvees are the hubs. Each hub has a plentary gear set in it that is to help with the torque needed for the wild loads they expect the thing to pull.
Add a EMP test and the Impersonator EV won't even move!😅
Although a funny statement, it is not really true. The original hummer would die too. Its engine has computers.

Too wide for the cutlines, no chance of tight turning in tight spaces, uncomfortable as F... We were all happy to get on the quad or snowmobile after the ride to the job site. Prior to this we ran around in modified Suburbans and they far out-preformed the H1s we were "blessed" with
It also depends on the roads, but in general the hummer h1 is difficult to beat

Important to note that weight (grip) is almost always the determining factor for a tug of war, second is power
How much HP, and even torque to a degree, is meaningless in a tug of war. The H1 would have either 3.08 or 2.83 diff gears and the portal hubs double that with another 2:1 reduction at the wheels.
@@tjkj-om9oi Its still the amount of power its able to put out at the wheels, and how much of that the wheels can put down on the ground
Humvee didn't replace the jeep, it replaced the M151, which replaced the Jeep.

The H1 Alpha is 4-5 times faster than the OG HMMWV(6.2 NA version with the turbo 400 trans) as those in most cases would never reach 60mph and those that could would take almost a full 60 seconds if not more to reach it.
