“DAY IN THE LIFE” of a gigging drummer!

- Check out a day (in this case, multiple days) in my life as a gigging drummer! 🥁 A lot of folks don’t know what all goes into putting on a rock show and what is involved before and after the gig! This is a typical day with my tribute band “Diary of an Ozzman” and what we get upto leading up to the show. Each show can be slightly different, but for the most part they all involve the same schedule including travel, load in, soundcheck, change over, and load out! Hope ya’ll enjoy this one, like, share and subscribe for more! 🤙
Great video! Man, was I fortunate to have a full road crew back when I was playing 250 one-nighters a year. All I had to do was move a couple of cymbal stands around and do a sound check. The crew was the most important part of our team. God bless them!
Awesome man! Crew members are some of the hardest working folks I know, mad respect to them!
I used to play in a band that would do a lot of shows over the course of a year. At one point I got sick of breaking down the kit in my studio (which was mic-ed up for recording), so I started looking around for a second kit just for gigs and left it and the (duplicate) hardware boxed up. It didn't cost me that much extra to assemble a second kit (drums and hardware only - I used the same cymbals so only had to pack those up). This was a decade ago and I think I managed to do it all for under $500. End result was a lot more free time and a lot less wear and tear on my "main" kit... and my body.
Heard that! I used to do that back in the day when I had the huge metal kit, but these days I keep it stripped down and easy to load and unload 🤘
@@codyondrums Yeah, I didn't mention that my kit is, shall we say, on the "bigger" side. LOL
But still, it helps with a smaller kit too.
@@fleatactical7390 i had two kits plus gear too, one for practise and rehearsals and one for gigs. I also had two cymbal sets. It makes the drumming live so much easier. I still
own all my cymbals, they don‘t take much space, but sold all my drums and gear. Except all the pedals, too much bonding. 😂
The aftershow party for sure seldom lives up to expectations!😂 Few people outside the scene really understand what goes into playing a venue on the day, let alone all the rehearsal time to prepare individually and with the band!
@@marcustait79 Exactly haha! Too much work to be done, and lots of preparation. After all that, I’m too tired to “party” LOL
Hi from a British drummer, i know exactly what you have to do, can't believe how much space you've got, we play a lot of pubs around Cambridgeshire, which can be very tight for space, haven't played a venue like that for a long time, keep rocking my friend 👏🥁👍
@@user-tm5jo7oh5u This venue is amazing and on the larger side for sure! I play lot’s of smaller and medium sized venues as well, cheers!!
I love it when he dumps the stick dust from the snare!
so much sawdust haha!
Great editing, i wanted more and thats a good thing... great playing also, great sounding drums
Thank you! More to come!
Being a drummer myself Cody I can totally relate to amount of work you put in even before the first song starts!
Your band sounds great and your drumming as well.
Cheers from 🇨🇦
Thanks bro, cheers!!

The backstage comment really got me. I played a venue that had a "vip" lounge for the bands, and it was something like, 12 people in a loft, no one talking. I was like, I'm gonna hit the bar!
So true haha! Glad you understand 😂
So True! If you want to make good money and a good, solid lifestyle for more than just yourself, not a good Career Choice!
Nice playing dude! UK drummer here - very good diary of the legwork involved in an average gig although I generally drive back the same night as the UK is a bit smaller.....and being a smaller country, there always appears to be stairs everywhere.
Everytime I move the kit I consider just having a second kit that lives in the car, just add the snare and cymbals. But then I'll need a bigger car, which will probably have stairs in it somewhere
Thanks dude! Some gigs I'll drive back the same night, just depends how far away it is. Got lucky with no stairs this time haha!
Great job, dude. Cheers from Brazil!
@@montsegur77 thanks dude, cheers!
Cool! I’m a keyboard/guitar player who also sings. Multiple keys and a guitar rig. I only go out and play now if the money is enough.
Bro! I so feel with you. Did that for a long time of years passing. I quit a few years ago. Best choice of my life. 😂
I won't ever quit man, but respect for doing the work for those years!
@@codyondrums that day will come. Trust me 😂
@@yGmtFTt9 when I’m in the grave 🤣
Enjoy the video Cody. I don't know how the algorithm found me but it did. All the best..
Revolution live, I used to play there 2x. It's such an amazing establishment, Cody. I'm also a South Florida Drummer myself too.
Agreed! I've played multiple shows here over the years and it's always such a good time and great venue!
As a drummer I’m digging that hardware case and the blue flat-dolly! And yes, having a truck is WAY better than packing a car like playing Jenga!
WAY better than 9-5! 🇨🇦👍🏼
@@barrybebenek8691 Thanks man, love that hardware case!
Genau so ist es. Viel Geschleppe und Warterei, aber es mach Sau viel bock!!!
Hey Cody excellent Video and good Drumming I live in North Port, Florida
Keep Drumming my Friend 😈🤟🏻
Thank you!
I gotta say on stage behind the drums all I needed was to hear a lil bass. Didn't need anything else. I. Knew the songs and could've played most of them alone by myself. I don't get why anyone would need to have a perfect sound to hear everything. Yes for certain musical subtitles but we rehearsed I knew the songs n dynamics. Just my experience tho others I understand are different
For sure! Each band is different, in this case I run backing tracks for certain songs with a click track. I like a blend of that, and a live feed to me since I'm on IEM's. I also have kick in my ears too which is nice in a live setting.
It's more about having drums in house. I got very tired of dragging all that gear across town for not enough money.
Nice playing. For a second, Ithought it was the real Ozzy Osbourne. 😂
haha, he looks like the real Ozzy!
I refuse to load any drums anywhere anymore. I did it for so long. If anyone wants me to play anywhere, they must respect me and my time and ability to have everything set up for me. It's not arrogant; it's truly math. Also I have always admired the way metal bands usually have the most gear with all the biggest nicest amps and mics that take the longest to set up and usually for the shortest shows and the least money. Metal is a love gig .
I would never expect anyone to set up my gear unless I'm at the point of hiring a drum tech for a tour. We have a very streamlined process for setting up and tearing down!
Who the F are you???
Crazy life being a Drummer. You sacrifice the best part of your Working & many times, Family life ( not all but many)to wind up with little to nothing in thee End!!!
@@batouttahell454 Absolutely man, so true!
There are engineers just for moniters?
In this case, yes. Not every venue will have them, but a lot of times we have a monitor engineer!
Yup. I’ve been one.
You practice in a storage unit?
Pretty much to only place a drummer can practice nowadays with all the reject talentless Karen's that constantly complain about everything.
Yes! I got lucky and the owner was cool with me practicing there!
@@codyondrums wow. The storage units in my area have timers you have to reset every 15 minutes or it automatically locks.
That was my question as well. No one appreciates the drums. Granted they are loud but whenever I hear an awesome drummer (like yourself) I have to stop and listen to just appreciate the hard work that went into that. I have always wanted to learn drums so I just live my dreams through other awesome drummer. Drumming for Ozzy. Man! That has to be incredible.
@@chrisklecker I appreciate the kind words! I definitely lucked out with this storage unit!
I'm an ex musician/ songwriter. That's all.
use two smaller hardware cases
broken back cant play
My back is very strong LOL
@@michaelbausachverstandiger5172 more cases is less pain. I totally agree.
Monitor engineers? Don't FOH organise mics?
FOH or monitor engineers will run lines, depending on the venue and band. In this case, we had monitor engineers who took care of all the lines, mics and wedges on the stage. FOH just had to be there for line check and sound check!
Wow lazy foa mofos! Lol @codyondrums
alot of drummers like to play too much as if they're getting paid by the note they play.
I would refuse to play anywhere in Florida
It's so hot lol!
