Dan feels the most normal companion ever. He doesn’t want to escape from the monotony of human life, he’s not the centre of some weird metaphysical anomaly, he doesn’t have any trauma he’s trying to recover from, he’s just a guy who likes Liverpool and has a wok.
Ok i don't remember a dalek ever saying "DALEKS DO NOT STORE STUFF" and i gotta thank chibnal for that one, for all his flaws that interaction was pretty funny
A lot of the writing in this era of Doctor Who was kinda bad (Not as bad as it got more recently, still) and some things come right out of nowhere (Yaz being a sudden lesbian) but there's also a lot to love in it. Jodie had her moments after quite the rocky start and terrible scripts, the companions were occasionally fun and inventive, and Dan was the best thing to happen to the show in quite a while.
Yaz's lesbianism (she could be bi, but then again I don't really care either way) isn't completely out of the blue. Watch Arachnids in the U.K. again and there's actually a couple of quite subtle hints, although very subtle mind you because she doesn't have any conscious feelings herself at that point. I'm a big fan of this era, and IMO Graham (and later Dan) is actually the best companion since Turlough, possibly even since Leela.
Dan has big Jamie energy
