Because we don't hear either of them say a word, but we can still understand the entire conversation, and it's hilarious. That is some quality acting, writing and directing.

Just a sign of how accurate they were with what time period they were supposed to be in. It was the 1800s, after all. Not to mention just being publicly homosexual was outright illegal, in most places in the world. Included "engaging in acts of passion", like kissing someone of the same sex "with romantic passion", or even showing similar romantic affection, or arousal, for someone of the same sex in public.
