Fantastic job mate, top quality step by step guide too. Started painting 23 years ago and you sir have just given me one of the best lessons ive ever had. Much appreciated pal 👍👍
As good and SIMPLE an explanation as I have seen...to the point. Getting that VERY light coat on those decals seems to be the secret to coating over vinyl decals.
Currently busy with a project and had Fish eyes on the Vinyl application. It is clear i went to heavy on my coats from the beginning. Thanks for the tips. i am going to redo this and will try give feedback tomorrow.

Everyone has their own ways of getting their best results. Personally I used to do it this way. But I've found that it's not necessary to sand smooth the edges for it to look fantastic. I just switch from using a production clear to a glam clear. Put on a dry tack coat, then 3 more coats gradually thicker. And just a little nib and rub. People are amazed at the shine results. And if I can hold onto the parts for a couple extra days to gas off. Add a couple coats of ceramic gel wax. Adds a touch more depth, but I mainly do it because customers suck at keeping it that way. And the ceramic wax helps them keep it fresh.
Thanks for the video brother. I'm redoing a 1970 Bonneville that I've had for more years than I care to remember. I bought a set of factory decals for the whole bike. I want the seamless painted on look and you made it possible. Cheers from Alabama USA.

That's the way I've always done it. It's really not a lot more work for the excellent result you get from doing it that way. Take care and have a great day.
Sadly I wasn't able to watch the premiere but I set a notification so I don't miss this vid. And just as I expected, as usual an awesome vid with a lot of helpful tips! Thank you so much for helping us being able to achieve better results 😉🤙
Just now seeing your channel and was wondering about my predicament. Freshly painted tank, fresh 2k clear, fresh cut n buff, was looking beautiful, just like a pro... then I scratched it doing a photo shoot. Grrr !! (among other four letter words lol). Going to put a 1 inch(2.5cm) sticker on it to cover the oopsie because I can`t match the color cheaply...Should I sand the entire tank to re-clear or could I get away with just sanding the area the sticker needs to cover and just clear that little bit ?
Just what i wanted to know if to lightly rub down the decals but ive got it sussed now thank you very much also your very explanatory for the novice which is great.
a little late just seen this looks great ,how long does the decals last under a good quality clear ,better question is how long does whole thing last before you start seeing cracks peeling etc?
Very helpful! Have you ever done a bicycle frame? I have an all satin clear coat black Trek with a silver logo, I would love to tape and put a purple tinted clear coat over them, but I don't know how it would turn out?
Love watching the bike stuff, i want to do a spray job on my bike but wasn't sure how to go about clear coating over decals so this video helped a lot! Liked!
Great video Tony very helpful Mate what would be the best type of decals to place on a tank under 2K clear coat. I'm thinking you wouldn't on them too thick ?
Thanks buddy and personally I’d be going for the best quality ones regardless of thickness so they last well and have good colour down the line ect rather than worry over thickness
@@TonysRefinishingTV Can I ask one more question ? "Did you put the decals down on the base coat or did you clear the base coat then put the decals down ?"
Hi, is there a video before you applied the decals on how you prepared the first clear coats for the decal application. Did you spray then just scuff the clear? Or did you spray completely flat off the clear then apply the decals?
Does this apply to spraying parts that don't have decals as well? As far as sanding down after 3 coats and then hitting it again with 2 more coats of clear?
So would the same rules apply for vinyl wrap? I plan to use a mixture of vinyl and paint on my helmet amd bike. After everything is done, I can just clear right over the vinyl amd paint?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! I’m about to start work on an old scooter to learn on. I’ve only ever sprayed cellulose with a high pressure suction gun but have bought an FLG 5 1.4. Would you recommend I use direct gloss to start off with?
Direct gloss is what I use mate as a base colour it’s cheap and a one stage product rather than having to base and clear then flat back for decals and flow coat
Hey, when you first painted the parts, did you lay a coat of clear down before installing the decals, and then do this final coat over everything? Or did you lay the decals straight in the paint before clear?

You always make it look so easy Tony. Stupid noob question...is there ever a chance that the solvent in the clearcoat could react with a decal and cause it to bubble or curl up?
Not stupid question at all mate it would make sense what your saying but for some reason aslong as you don’t go say real high thinners content in the clear then it’s fine mate and most inks these days for printed vinyls like in this video are solvent based too so they don’t run or have any issues
I have just bought some tank decals for my Suzuki GS550, and i asked the seller if they can be lacquered over. The reply i got was" yes, but avoid thinners in the lacquer". But surely i need thinners in the lacquer. What do you think to that reply? Oh, your video is excellent, very helpful.
@@TonysRefinishingTV Thanks for the reply, they are vinyl ( Mactac ), cost me £78, and bought them from Classic reproduction decals in Nottingham. Thanks again Tony.
Could you clear coat like this over home printed decals? I want to add some graphics to my mountain bike frame by printing out some vinyl decals, adding them over my new paint job, then using Spray Max 2k over everything. I usually spray my printed decals with rustoleum 2x clear for waterproofing and I've never had a problem with the printed colors running.

Hey Tony, great video thanks for that! Would there be any problem in adding the decals on a clear coat that has already be wet sanded? And then adding the other layers of clear over it?
Brilliant as usual, would you ever choose a mini gun for bike stuff? Is it possible im over compensating on my passes because it’s a smaller fan? I’ve often wondered would a full size gun actually be easier, or is it what I suspect and actually just down to me still lol, I’ve been painting 6 years now and still get them 🤣
Lol mate we all get them fella and bike panels are the worst for it for exactly your reasons above , personally I like to turn down the fan and fluid on my larger guns abit and use those as that’s what I’m used to but you’ve gotta be carefull on your hardener and thinner speed choice if your so in for gun finish try fast and fast for both less chance of safe and runs then mate hope that helps
@@TonysRefinishingTV thanks mate really appreciate that! I’m going to pick up an original w400 and see how I go with it, I remember you doing some bike stuff with one years ago in an inflatable booth I think it was, looked effortless to use! Thanks for the help mate
Is it too late? The Vinyl stickers are already faded. By the sun Is it too late that I can’t spray this on or what can I do to fix it without replacing the whole sticker?
That is one glassy finish Tony looks amazing. Sorry again for missing the live chat I'm really pissed I wasn't there 🤬 ok as you know I'm testing the final systems ultimate HS clear and while I'm getting a great finish the state of my first coat is still really bugging me even though it doesn't matter, so clear is 15C, panel is 30C and I'm using the super rapid hardener and adding 5% standard thinners, after the first coat there is what looks like hundreds of little spots/pin holes all over the panel, is it possible to have solvent pop on your first coat or is it still a bit dry? I'm wondering if the hardener is to fast for the temps I have these days, it's not just this clear but the same with multi-mix and again extra fast hardener. Second coat is fine with a nice glassy finish but by then the panel is down to about 19C. Sorry for the long post as usual 🙄 thanks Tony 🙏👍
Your gardener choice mate the faster the speeds the more the clear will pull back on you which is the issue there , and add 10% it’ll help it flow out the pin holes as you say will just be it’s not properly covered and flowed
Ah right that made sense mate but I don't think changing my 'gardener' will help but I need a slower hardener 🤔, also lowering my temps more might also help, Jordan said in the vid for this clear that it's designed to be used without thinners also says it in the TDS but who follows the tds anyway 😂 cheers mate 🙏👍
Hi Tony, did you apply the vinyl to the base coat with no clear applied? If so, any concern with the first layers of clear sticking to a fully dried base coat? Before I looked into this I was thinking shooting all the panels with the base, clearing, allowing dry time, scuffing the clear, apply the stickers, then go into the next layers of clear.

Lol iPhones for ya mate
Hi Tony, did you apply the vinyl to the base coat with no clear applied? If so, any concern with the first layers of clear sticking to a fully dried base coat? Before I looked into this I was thinking shooting all the panels with the base, clearing, allowing dry time, scuffing the clear, apply the stickers, then go into the next layers of clear.
Hey Tony, read through most of the comments and got my answer, you do lay a clear over the base and scuff before applying the stickers.
Anot good video. I worked out the p1000 is just 1000gritvwet n dry. Good to see how its done.
Great job! Going to do clear over decals soon and this was wery informative, thanks!
