This, coupled with almost a throwaway comment he makes in another video to the effect of "keep your feet quiet" has completely changed my swing from unpredictable to completely solid.

I just found your channel yesterday, and between this video and your flattening the downswing plane video, I feel like you and I are spiritually connected. You just had to know that I was suffering these swing defects and you felt the need to put out these videos so I could find them!
What great tips and the way you explain and demonstrate the movements is exactly how I needed to learn them! Thank you.

  • @MPerski

    Good stuff 👍🏻
    But I have another question:
I have a tendency to, in my followthrough, finish with my upper body way left (behind me at setup).
I see this when I video my swing down the line.
I think I do this in an effort to post up and face the target (or turn my shoulders further left than target).
Do you have any suggestions to finish more like you do here? … facing the target and stopping my followthrough down the target line; or as I see in some better players, actually leaning forward toward the ball at setup (right side bend)
    Thank, Jonathan 🙏🏻
    Keep up the good work.

Can you make a video about your philosophy on where u aim during a golf swing? I hear all different answer from other good golfers. Some say they aim at the back of the ball, some say they aim 3 inches in front of the ball, some said they focus on the edge of each club into the ball, some said they DONT aim at anything it’s all natural, the club path automatically square into the ball. What is your opinion on this?

I recently videoed myself hitting balls at the range and was rather shocked at how much my knees collapse (toward the ground) during my downswing. Being a very tall person, it made me think this might be a symptom of my iron shafts being too short (they are standard length and I know in the past I once used 1" over standard).

That’s fine but if you have lack of hip mobility and flexibility then the knee kick back gives you room too swing into I have to do this and it does control the back swing as well you could say old style swing Johnny Miller, Pavin etc Seve even did this but I see points here too 👍

Mechanically leg movement in a golf swing is very similar to how in an engine the linear piston motion (hips, feet and legs) is translated into circular motion of the crankshaft (pelvis). The legs are the connecting rods and in a golf swing they start out bent achieve good balance of the body+cantilevered club mass as it dynamically shifts.
The initial takeaway movement in a swing is a LATERAL shift of the hips straight back to trigger it. I prefer to use what Steve Bann (Australian coach of Adam Scott) suggested in “Simply Golf - Back to Basics” which is starting at address with front leg a bit more vertical than the back / | not a rigid / \ A frame which is what beginners seem to use by default because they imagine or are told they should not sway the hips because it will cause a loss of balance. That is true, but only if the stance is so narrow that it allows the legs to move past vertical \ \ in the takeaway or the finish / /.
Jack Nicklaus in Golf My Way relates his coach Jack Grout’s advice on hip sways: It is OK to sway the hips sideways, but never so much the hips pass the inside of the ankles. The reason being that to have the mechanical leverage needed to counter unbalancing swing force some inwards tilt of both legs towards the axis for rotation shoulders around pelvis and feet of spine is needed.
The key to controlling lateral shift of hips and pelvis rotation in the swing is keeping the feet on the ground (or not). If both heels are grounded a lateral shifting “hula” movement parallel to the target line will, like the piston and crankshaft in the engine, automatically rotate the pelvis in a circle, but the heels down limit the travel bio-mechanically to 45° closed and 45° open when the feet are squared to the target line - | | -.
That “stuckness” is needed in the takeaway is what helps trigger the radical change in direction of the club head mass and its acceleration which gives it a “free” ride against the force of gravity to the top of the backswing. What most don’t seem to realize is the goals of the backswing are: 1) getting the club shaft into the ideal = parallel with swing line position for a well balanced downswing arc, 2) stretching and twisting the muscles and sinews of the body like rubber bands and torsion bar to power the downswing.
I have emulated the swings of many different pro golfers to understand their underlying bio-mechanics and physics.
Hogan, Snead, Nelson, Demaret, Jones and most others who started out playing with hickory shafted clubs used a low sweeping outside hands takeaway to prevent the mass in the toe of from twisting the shaft of the club and its face angle during the swing. To accomplish that low sweeping extension of arm and club shaft with minimal twisting of the club face open (having it snap shut unpredictably in the downswing at impact) they MOVED HIPS, SHOULDERS AND HANDS together in the takeaway until hip rotation is forced to stop at 45° closed at which point: 1) the arresting of backwards movement of the club head mass must stop or change direction, doing the latter at the wrists because the pull of the club on the left arm makes it the weakest pivot point in the left lever arm; 2) the back left straightens pushing the right side of the pelvis up and forward and the left side down and back, pushing the front knee down and back; 3) shoulders start to turn past the hips.
Nicklaus in the late 60s popularized a new swing style made possible by steel shafted clubs that can bend far more than wood before snapping, which is the swing style which is conventional wisdom today in which the legs are used to limit hip rotation in the backswing starting at the takeaway where the hips are kept stationary and the shoulders and hands turn around them instead of hips, shoulders and hands all moving together. This results is less lateral shifting of the hips at the start of the swing to the point beginners stand frozen like their legs are concrete posts because they take “don’t sway the hips” instruction be some 11th Commandment writ on a stone tablet somewhere. 🤷🏼‍♂️ As as result most lose any concept of the fluid athletic movement used for things like throwing a ball or chopping wood WHICH USE THE SAME HIPS/SHOULDERS/HANDS TOGETHER ERGONOMICS HOGAN DID. Without any lateral shift of the hips they struggle with swing path, balance and weight transfer. Many compound the balance problem with stances which are too narrow (allowing swaying when their club path pulls them off balance in the takeaway, impact and finish) or can achieve full hip rotation after impact when lifting the back heel allows the hips to rotate again after having been stuck 45° open by the back foot staying flat.
Stopping the hips at 45° open in the downswing with a flat back foot, combined with the way SIDEBEND tucks in the right arm elbow bent (for superior mechanical leverage) are both part of the strategy for accelerating the club head faster than the hands are being sweep down. The physics of that action works like a car being accelerated from 0 - 60 then slamming on the brakes and sending the passenger in the seat through the windshield with the lever arm of the club whipping around the hands causing the club head mass to accelerate and rapidly increase F = `1/2 (Mass x Velocity^2) striking force.
The significant difference in the powering of the down swing move the modern (Nicklaus) swing style vs. Hogan is that Hogan planted is back foot square and INTENTIONALLY allowed the back leg to go straight to develop a great amount of twisting torque WHICH IS ONLY ESTABLISHED AND FELT WHEN THE BACK LEG IS ALLOWED TO STRAIGHTEN COMPLETELY AND PUSH THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PELVIS FORWARD. In the shoulders first style of Nicklaus far less torque is felt in the back leg with most of the power for the downswing instead being stored by stretching the muscles in the back and shoulders at the top of the swing. That difference is felt in the downswing.
Hogan’s coiling of the back leg fires the hips open forcefully when a slight lateral shift to target => caused than bent back front knee \ to straighten | then angle forward / making weight shift automatically no-brainer consistent.
The Nicklaus style swing taught today starts with the stretched back and shoulders flinging the shoulders around first, but with the same side bend action Hogan used at the point the shoulders turn and become parallel with the swing line again =.
Having done both styles, plus Norman, Snead, Nelson, and Count Yogi I can say that consistently executing the Nicklaus shoulder centric swing is far more difficult to coordinate because there are more moving parts and the parts do not move to the limit of their travel. What made Hogan’s swing so consistent were the actions of the hips locking at 45° closed at the trigger for the club cocking the wrists and the upward path to = parallel at the top and the fact he allowed his back leg to straighten at the top of the back swing, which is easier to do consistently than trying to keep a consistent amount of bend in the back knee.
I’ve noticed that several tour pros have gone back to the Hogan style hip/shoulders/hands together takeaway. Rocco Mediate who was coached by Jimmy Ballard changed to that style before the 2008 US Open with Tiger because the Nicklaus style swing had wrecked his back. Tiger had to have spinal fusion after years of using the Nicklaus style and taking the “don’t move the hips in the backswing” thing to the limit.
All things considered the Hogan style swing, but with a freely lifted right arm is a better swing model for the average recreational golfer because it is easier Master with limited practice and easier to execute.

Interesting. I think age also plays a factor. Restricting knee movement restricts the turning of your hips. A little tension is okay but restricting too much will ultimately reduce the length of your back swing. As you age I believe you need to let the knee give a little so that you can wind your hips a bit. Do you agree Jonathan?

Obviously if you keep your weight 50/50 or even shift some weight to the left in the backswing to keep the left knee from collapsing it will work... But shifting weight even so slighly on left side while in the backswing you really recommend this as the solution to this issue?

    • @JKMGolf

Feel and real is different. Players who are used to shifting a large majority of weight into their trail side will feel as if they are keeping more of their weight on their lead side. However, even though they are feeling this, their weight becomes more evenly distributed.

Sway is a bad word in golf, but facts are facts. 98% of pro’s measured with GEARS and 100% of current top 10 golfers move sway/away from the target with their pelvis. That is a simple verifiable fact and has been GEARS measured and published by AMG. The pelvis “sway” range away from the target is between 1.2 and 3.5 inches with average just under 2 inches for top pro’s. Now they are re-centering BEFORE the down swing. But truth is the best players pelvis sway away. I recommend AMG data on this - likely Sean and them published a video on it. Most pro’s re-center so early it’s often perceived they move toward the target while never swaying away. Just not true. Love your videos, love your uncanny ability to communicate.

    That’s a little bit confusing. A
lot of your colleagues recommend to bend the left knee inward a little bit to get more rotation and don’t hurt yourself.

Wrong advice. You cannot move your hips without ground influence via the feet and legs first.

@@markandoniou3512 You obviously have no hip turn, or ever felt the correct powerful move

I don’t recall commenting on anything you wrote about the golf swing.
I was merely pointing out that there is always some smart ass who thinks they know more than the teaching pro.
Did you ever stop and consider that JK Moss may have thought that he didn’t need to state the obvious! Or that he may want to delve into the ground influence in another video.
Maybe you should start your own channel and give us all a laugh..
