The Smallest Nintendo 64 Ever Made

  • The iQue was a refined Nintendo 64 released in China during the early 2000s. This system was a much smaller N64 packing the entire system into a controller the sized of an original Xbox controller. The system itself was fairly impressive even coming out a bit faster than the original N64 console showing that Nintendo has created what is essentially a Nintendo 64 Mini in the past.

      There were actually two models of the iQue. One has the mini-USB cable and the support built-in to connect to iQue servers to download the game you'd want after purchasing it. Apparently there is a small scene, but given it can be a complete crapshoot, it's basically not worth picking one up to do it.

    I played my N64 without a heatsink for years and hours of gameplay and it was totally fine. I actually lost the heat sink because I was working on it for a while and after I used it for a whole 3 years without it I chopped up an existing heat sink and used it on the N64 just in case!

    • @nitrax8629
      @nitrax8629 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The RF shield alone provided a fair amount of surface area, with the heatsink piece acting as a bit of an extension to it.

    • @RonyIsaPony
      @RonyIsaPony 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nitrax8629 Yeah I had the RF shield on because I was paranoid! What ended up happening was when I touched the chips while in oot after about an hour or 2 in the fire temple, they were warm not hot to the touch so I didn't worry about it because I wasn't gonna play n64 for more than 3 hours. I left it on overnight to see the result and it was still not hot. The shielding was warm. Overall I think the n64 doesn't really need the heatsink unless you are overclocking!

    Yes, that "SoC" means system-on-chip in that line. Also, this was released before the console-ban in China (there was official PlayStation 2 in China as well). iQue (the company) was able to release DS and 3DS in China during the console ban for some reason though, but they are just modified DS/3DS systems, not like iQue. There were multiple accessories released for iQue as well, one of being the "controller-only" version of this controller-console hybrid designed for local multiplayer, and a box for four -player multiplayer capability.

    • @HKgaming86
      @HKgaming86 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the iQue existed because of the console ban, and that the fact that the whole system existed within the controller circumvented said ban, as it would be classified as a portable rather than a home console

    • @HKgaming86
      @HKgaming86 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      and also the iQue was released after the ban in 2003 (the ban started in 2000). Sony on the other hand tried to position the ps2 as a "computer entertainment system" and planned to release the ps2 in 2003, China quickly responded by banning sales and advertising. Eventually in 2004 the ps2 did see a release in china however only 10 games ever got released during it's lifespan. The history of video games in China is indeed very interesting. South Korea also has a pretty interesting ban on Japanese game consoles where Samsung & Hyundai would release versions of Sega & Nintendo consoles. And the of course you have the Dendy in Russia (another Famiclone)

    Very interesting video thanks. It would have been great to see you playing the actual console plugged in and connected to a TV. And it appears that a real drawback to this form-factor for modern-day use is lack of multiplayer (I assume).

    I'm actually jealous of this. I'm sure that someone could modify it to play N64 games directly and remove the obsolete kiosk port. This controller kind of reminds me of the modern "Brawler" third party N64 controller. I have heard of this console device a few times in the past and I had assumed it was a typical Chinese knockoff with Super Mario Bros and a bunch of other Nes games on it. This was incredible to hear that it was an official Nintendo product that was a miniature N64.

    With all the N64 hardware documentation being found in the iQue leak, proving that Nintendo still has all schematics and whatnot to make another, modern N64 SoC, the chances are pretty high that they'd do it for an N64 Mini. It certainly would help for power usage since the SoC alone should only draw a couple of watts, if not less than a Watt. =P
