John you really need to make sure to wear a mask when cutting pcb boards. That dust is hell on the lungs and can actually damage them. You are essentially inhaling fiberglass. Safety first.

My suggestion, if the screw holes are too tight, try driving the screws without the PCB to create the threads/bore out the holes. Then remove the screws, place the PCB and screw in. It may seem obvious to some but better to point it out and save someone from thrashing their PCB and/or components.

I used some CAT5 to wired up computer parts for a lab on a breadboard in school back in the day. CPU, RAM, ROM, etc. It was a terrible experience because these little cables are very fragile and some of them broke inside the sheath from being manipulated too much. It was a nightmare to debug.

Nice work Spawn Wave, also don't forget to remove the 5 capacitors on the front of the Wii motherboard. You will not be able to close up the case if you don't and it's easier to remove them now before too many tiny wires are on. That is something that wasn't included in the Manual but can be seen in the pictures of the Manual.

    • @notneeded872

I understand the first 2 but the intact part doesn't make sense, It would make it significantly larger, and the other stuff on the board is mostly voltage controllers, disk drive stuff, wireless stuff (WiFi and Bluetooth which can be moved) and game cube controller stuff. Using it couldn't even avoid soldering because of the fact that you'd have to redo the voltage control anyway

Pretty impressive stuff here. I wish I knew how to do all of these motherboard and soldering things. But engineering just isn't my strong suit. I'm more of the software user/modder. So as impressive as this "portable Wii" is, I'll just settle for Dolphin to run on my smartphone to run my GameCube and Wii games.

For sure replace some of your thicker wire with magnet wire. It's a bit of a learning curve as it's hard to see and a pain to use. But overall way better for things like data, RBG LED, and the U10 relocation. It's really nice to see a well-made video of someone going through this the first time. Also if you end up having trouble with the Bluetooth (bc it's an absolute pain) it's not really needed unless you're playing with a Wii mote. Aurelio patched out the need to have Bluetooth to play Wii games and you can use GCMote to emulate certain actions like shaking in Wii games.

Make sure to remove the caps on the motherboard. Also, you need magnet wire for vga to work. One tip I have for you is to not have so much bare wire exposed, can lead to shorts, especially on the PMS. Goodluck on your build!

instead of cutting directly through the capacitors/resistors/ICs, remove them with pliers/desolder them, it's quite easy to slip when trying to cutting through them.
(btw, you're super brave dude: I would have never dared to solder all the cables while everything is already in, I would have messed up everything anyways, great job!)

To put the screws easier first put the screws by themselves so they carve a thread inside of the post, so when you put the boards it'll be easy, they'll screw right in

I was very much looking forward to this video.
You made it look so simple. Can you include a "total build time" when you finish up, as well as a review of what you believed to be the hardest parts?
I've been eyeing this kit myself, and so far the only thing I think they might seem to improve would be recommended wire lengths and placement.
    *Edit*
Also, people who want to do this alongside him, you might want to buy yourself your "cutting Wii", because I think once a number of TH-camrs show off the G-Boy and its assembly, they're going to skyrocket in aftermarket price.

if you do this sort of thing all the time you should definitely be wearing a mask, both because of the dust and the fumes, but breathing in some of that stuff once probably isn't going to be that detrimental. the quantity of resin fumes is low and the dust mostly gets trapped in the mucus.
glasses on the other hand are always a must, because one shard one time is enough to cost you your binocular vision.

I've heard that some products actually use self tapping screws, which means the plastic itself doesn't have any threads for them, but once you "tighten" them you are good to go. if you disassemble a product with this feature you should: a) return each screw to it's proper location (size does matter hahaha) and b) when putting it back together, first turn the screw counter clockwise (loosen) till you feel it click, and then clockwise (tighten). that way you won't damage the plastic making stuff last longer.
(I just love this stuff. maybe I've wasted too much time watching these sorts of videos, maybe not...) :,D

I bet for those 3D-printed screw posts, it'd be beneficial to first take the point of a Philips driver and turn it against the opening a few times. This could make a small inward slope to help you keep the base of the screw in place as you turn it.
