To your point about the Rimac vs the Plaid; I saw a Plaid in line with me when picking up my kid from school, then saw another one about 15 minutes later, it was sitting in the McDonalds parking lot; you are right, its not just how fast they are, it IS how availible they are to the general public. These Plaid beasts are actually roaming around in the real world, not hidden or caged in a garage somewhere; that is part of what makes them so mind blowing!

Also, make sure the space in front of you is clear, and your wheels are straight. 😉 Also, don't set creep. Hold is the way to go, so you can rest your foot on the go pedal at a light.

Yes, in reality...for the majority of people... the passing/overtaking power is a big thing. It's great to pass a few slower cars, when you have tons of power, although..with bad decision-making, you might...no, WILL be tempted to pass 10 cars, when you normally would have passed 4. That means you pull back in at WAY into triple digit speeds...bad news if a curve is coming up.
The other, but similar scenario, is merging onto a highway.. being able to match traffic-flow speed within a second or 2 could be considered a safety benefit.

This is what makes a plaid a plaid. not the 0-60 since a lot of new ev performance cars are doing pretty impressive around 3 second 60s. its the 50-70 time to punch a gap in traffic or the 100-160 times. its 1000hp / tq flat curve instantly at any mph thats insane and makes it leagues above and beyond even a p100d from a couple years ago.

The plaid is even faster than a F1 car 0 - 60. I think the plaid battery/motor tech would actually be really good for an electric F1 type of racing. Especially as how fair you could make it. You'd add standardised chargers and battery modules in the pit stops and batteries would be swapped out as they do with tyres. But it would mean that every team has a 100% equal chance. They just have to build a car that can make the most of the modules provided.

I appreciate your honesty on this video at the end, when you said you wanted not to like the electric cars, but.. it's hard with numbers like the Tesla's. I'm sure the gasoline racing cars are going to still be a thing, if anything, you should hold on to your muscle cars as long as you can, because they will become less and less available over the next few decades, which means they will get pricier.
Think about it this way: when automobiles became available on the streets of cities, replacing horses and carriages, people were scared that horse racing is going to disappear. Now, sure, horse racing is not as popular as it used to be in those days, but even when a new technology comes up, there will still be the nostalgic crowd that want to keep the old ways, because people like to do fun activities. And tinkering on a vehicle with an engine and transmission and all the other stuff in there is fun for a lot of people (I admire you guys, but I'm more of a computer nerd) . As long as there are people who like this thing, it's not going to go away. But there will be restrictions and additional costs associated with this activity, just as there are today with horses. Think about the time when oil prices will be so high that people will not be interested in buying Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles anymore. I suspect that it's sooner than most people think. Also, the emissions are going to be probably restricted to rural area, and even then, maybe heavily taxed. Again, the technology changes how we live in the world, but in the end, we have to adapt.
Not convinced? Another example that shows that how we changed our lives in the world: smoking was a major thing until very recently. Once we were able to prove the bad things about it, it was heavily restricted and taxed. Still, it's not disappeared, there are still plenty of people who smoke (sure, probably not as many as before). But people have adapted to this, willingly or not, and they can still enjoy their guilty (and very dangerous) pleasure. Except it costs much more and can't do it anywhere you want it.

Not really a race car guy, however I am always interested in Tesla, Space X etc.
The big thing in my mind is that if you consider the wear and tear on an ICE engine if you are repeatedly pushing high end performance out of it compared to an electric drive system I think that will be the long term difference. In aviation a jet engine is something like 250 times more reliable than a piston engine aircraft engine. I think well manufactured electric cars will crush the long term maintenance cost of Piston engines vehicles. Within 10 years there will be a fundamental change in the automotive industry, hold on to your hats!

The Plaid also has one of the best stereos in any car. Would be trivial to pipe in whatever engine noise you wanted to hear. Of course, it'll sound weird as there is no shifting. Or, you can pump in engine shifting noises, but that'll feel weird. The only thing that'd probably work is an F1 car or sport bike running to redline in 1st.

THANK YOU for being HONEST. My first car was a 1961 SS Chevy 409. For a year, I was King of the street with a high 13 second car....Didn't last long!....Skip to today. As much as I love muscle cars, we are, as Elon has said, "are into ALIEN TECHNOLOGY'. Don't hate new tech, embrace it as Tesla's roadster at 1.1 SEC. 0-60 is at most 2 years away! And they have it where some of the Tesla's, for $2000, can buy added performance of making them 1/2 second quicker with a COMPUTER ADJUSTMENT. Taking less than half an hour to download!....The current Plaids motors aren't even at their full potential, as when Tesla releases an UPGRADE, the top speed is AT LEAST 220 MPH!!!!
That much power in a 5000 pound car is ASTOUNDING. Brooks at Drag Times has already made his Plaid sound like a Lambo through an outside speaker already installed on these cars. NEXT big thing is to RETROFIT older muscle cars onto an altered Plaid chassis.....We have restomods now, why not fully drivable 9 second 60-70's muscle?...IT WILL HAPPEN, just takes a little time!

At this point it's not so much the motors that are limiting power as is the battery pack. Tesla's drive trains are setup for 400V so the battery packs are configured to provide 400Vdc nominal. Since power is essentially Volts x Amps (for electrics), and since we're locked into 400V the limiting variable is then the amperage. I don't know the exact figures but I believe the Raven was drawing about 1500 amps max at 400V (600kW/746 = 800 Hp). The Plaid is probably closer to 2000 amps which I believe they're achieving with an improved 18650 chemistry and better cooling. The motors themselves are a much improved "carbon sleeved rotor" version with a much broader torque curve and a limit of over 23,000 rpm (up from 18,000). Tesla hasn't released exact details but Inside EVs attempted an engineering analysis that's probably very close:

A few takeaways about our impending electric future...
    1) unlike the 1970s, we won't be sacrificing speed for improved emissions, so at least it's going to be exciting.
    2) I'll always adore the sound of a screaming V8 -- it's a machine, but feels so ALIVE. That said, as EVs become more popular, sticking with an old-school gas engine (as long as they are allowed) will be akin to buying a manual transmission today. The Autos are faster now (gearing advantages and shifting quickness), but the feeling of driving a manual is just so wonderful even if it's at a numbers disadvantage.
    3) I attended an F-150 Lightning ridealong event recently and it's incredible... fastest, smoothest, best handling F150 of all time. It's basically as fast as a Mustang GT. And, sure, the Coyote F-150 sounds great, but the EcoBoost and PowerBoost F-150s are ALREADY faster... And to me, when you're trading in an EcoBoost (they all sound like trash, IMHO) for no sound, it's not as much of a loss than when you drop the V8. So perhaps, as emissions rise and V8s become rare, the transition will feel more natural because we're trading a bad-sounding ICE for silent amazingness.
Regardless, I'm going to keep my 2013 Boss 302 forever, and hope to buy an EV in the next few years.

Somebody was concerned about the traditional jobs lost in tune shops, but gas cars of old will be grandfathered in so all those jobs are not going to be lost anytime soon, but you are going to have hi tech mod shops spring up for these new electric vehicles. You are going to have sound effect packages for these cars. Someone did say it is so "fake" to put acoustics in a speaker to replace the lack of an exhaust note of these cars, then again, hell, look at all the exhaust only mods people did in the late 70s, early 80s with a 150 h.p. Corvette to make it sound fast, when they were slower than a Nissan Optima of today. I own a Scat Pack and a Corvette, also owned 2 Mustang Gts, I like my V8 rumble but there is no denying that in a few years your "average" electric car with a soccer mom behind the wheel will be able to blow the doors off the high end muscle cars, change is coming, might as well embrace it as best we can, however, keeping my V8s also as long as I can

Great review and represents the Plaid accurately. I own one, and for those of you who think it’s boring to drive, or somehow less exciting to drive than an ICE car, just say you’ve not driven a plaid yet and you should just leave it at that. It’s a damn blast to drive and you’d have to be a corpse to feel otherwise after actually driving one.
For those of you that lament the fall of ICE cars because of the Plaid and the writing on the wall it brings…. I say do what you love and fast ICE street cars are not dead by a long shot, you just need to up your ICE game to keep up. This may actually push ICE manufacturers to do the same!
Before buying my Plaid, I finished my GTR build, and that car is much faster than my Plaid, and at 1,612whp, it damn well better be. It feels it too, but the 1,192 ft lbs torque hits differently than the 1,050 ft lbs of the Plaid. The plaid hits like a wall, where the GTR hits like a large wave, larger than the wall. It’s also a massive amount of drama, sound, fury, and fear that is absent in the Plaid, which is thrilling yet but inflexible in use on the street (ohh, but I do use it regardless, haha). Applying that kind of power with an ICE car on the street is difficult to manage without the car moving around, and even Motec M1 traction control cannot eliminate wheelspin like the direct granular control of an electric motor application.
The plaid does what it does on the down low, discreetly, and without wheelspin, and you can get away with far more without alarming the police or fellow motorists if a modicum of discretion is actually applied.
Regardless, ICE is not dead! Toss that PD blower and get a real set of hairdryers on there and get back in the game! Mod up man! Just don’t try that Plaid at the light without your beadlocks on, haha.

An ICE racecar is exactly that. A RACE CAR....Try to make 10 consecutive passes with NO COOL DOWN, and you are REAL LUCKY if all you get is vapor lock. A Plaid is ALL THINGS, and you will see them in the low 8 second range and possibly 7's and drive away from the track. The POTENTIAL hasn't even been touched out here on the Street.. The math regarding the Plaids motors show it at only 89% efficiency. It is terribly underrated for what could be available....Someone with HUGE COMPUTER SKILLS, could make thousands if they could hack that computer and remove the limiter. NOTICE that for the 6 months or so that they have been out, NO ONE has taken them into the 8's, even when stripped and a 100 lb. Woman driver goes 9.08!.even a blind man realizes that they are computer controlled to NOT run an 8 second 1/4. Rimac has no such limiter and just ran an 8.52 quarter at 168 I believe. That car SUPPOSEDLY HAS 1914 HORSE Power, almost a thousand more than a Plaid and is marginally 1/2 second quicker with double power????....I rest my case!

Great comment, if EV, hybrids are regarded as an addition to petrol and diesels that would be ideal. I think what’s upsetting a lot of us car guys is the fear that EV will replace all other cars including ICE, diesel and hybrid. This fear is not unfounded as they seem to be pushing for EV stations, EV charge points at home running on smart meters and phasing out petrol in the future. Not good

I want a simple version that doesn't rely on an ipad glued to the dash to run everything and little motors and sensors all over the body to operate door handles and trunk lids. Reliability is an issue with Teslas. Don’t misunderstand, I like the cars. Yes the can beat a car 0-60. But, if it was racing an Indy car for 500 miles the battery would over heat .nobody is mentioning how you have to cool them down.
