Hey everyone! Glad you enjoyed the video! Just a note on the brakes: as we said in our track test, the Model S Plaid is underbraked. Basically what that means is that it doesn’t have the stopping power to compensate for how ridiculously fast it gets to speed. Nor does it have the thermal capacity to continue to drag its mass to a stop over and over again. When we filmed this, the brakes overheated on the SECOND stop. And from then on there was a drastic reduction in braking performance. Furthermore, braking performance comes from more than just the pads and rotors. Suspension, abs calibration and tires all come into play. We found that it lacked in most of those departments and didn’t impart confidence to the drivers. When we film these we do multiple runs and tests, to make sure we can extract the best possible performance out of the cars before we actually race. And it seemed like the Plaid we had here never recovered. The first stop is “fine” yes. (Should still be better for how quickly it gets to speed) but anything after that it didn’t have the performance necessary to give the drivers a feeling of confidence at all stopping from 250+km/h on our rather bumpy braking zone. A car with this level of straight line performance should have brakes powerful enough and consistent enough to stop it over and over again. That said, if you just treat this like a road car. It’s totally fine. And despite our comments we are still blown away by the Plaid. Thanks for watching!
Honestly you guys should just do a brake test. All this just seems like speculation until you bring in some comparable cars at the same price range, and test their braking distances. Bring in a few 100% stock cars, with the manufacturer’s brakes still on, and do a side-by-side test to show how it compares to similar cars at its price range.

One of the points that they didn't mention in the video is that the power delivery of the Tesla Model S Plaid is limited up to about 60MPH because the acceleration is as quick as it can be. Being limited by AWD street tire traction. The difference in the Plaid model, is that after 60MPH the power keeps building from 600HP up to 1000HP+ and stays there to VMAX. So other AWD high performance cars can accelerate to 60MPH almost as quickly as the Plaid, but then the Plaid's power keeps building and it just walks away from most every other production car ever made. 60-130MPH and 100-150MPH are both around 4.5 seconds! @@sjorsangevare well there's two categories that could be why Thomas was struggling, weight (which we all know) and brake wear/fade. By the third run those brakes were already pushed to its limits, hell maybe even the second run, remember when James said he could smell his brakes? That's a sign of VERY heavy braking. Which gives me reason to believe that the braking wasn't exaggerated for Thomas, he was really fighting the brakes. An I do believe one episode when they did this, not sure what they dragged against but he raced the tesla against something and he had to put BOTH feet on the brakes to stop the car. Plus also we gotta add in the speed of that machine and weight that those tiny brakes can't handle. That car needs 6 piston brembo (or equivalent) brakes to stop that tank of a car.
May be they are not used to driving at that speeds. Here in Germany, most people who have cars drive 180 - 200 km/h regularly on the Autobahn as a part of daily commute. It doesn't starts getting scary up until 250 km/h (for me personally).

A half second faster for a large family car with a big boot and 3 more usable back seats.
On the Nordschleife here in Germany the Plaid is slower than a Camaro ZL1 1LE. And the price from the Plaid is….you know. And by the way the Tesla looks sooooo boring.
@@Klausiphone I don't think the model s' target audience is people who track their cars.
@@Klausiphone noo are you serious? Is the 5000 pound family sedan not quicker around the nordschleife than a supercar?
And the look, interior and build quality.
But I've to say I don't have much sympathy towards Elon Musk in general, because he uses dubious methods for publicity and pushing the value of his companies to increase his own wealth, so I'm not fully objective. Tesla is worth as much as all other bigger car companies together while selling a microscopic fraction of cars, so Tesla would've to take over the whole market to live up to its market price, which he created with a cult of personality around him, getting many normal people into buying shares, giving wrong promises and pseudo-revolutionary features. Not everything is bad and he made some really cool stuff, but there are many things I don't like and he does them well knowing it will make him richer.
The one thing I learned from this is the plaid doesn’t have nearly enough breaks for the power it has.
It’s insane how good of a launch the Porsche has considering it’s non electric
Now imagine if it had 1000hp as the Tesla
The Tesla would get Gaptized 🤣.. one with 870hp already beat the plaid by 3 to 4 cars
@Kevin Smith It will never get into Production Man. Accept the Fact that Porsche did real well. Bring the Plaid to a Racetrack and the Turbo S Will gap it lol.
@Kevin Smith you are one salty Tesla fan boy fam, it needs 400hp more to beat Porsche
@Kevin Smith The Plaid isn't a "superior vehicle" to the Turbo S. In acceleration yes, but the Porsche is still the superior car to a Plaid.
@Kevin Smith Imagine this, imagine that. The Roadster 2.0 is a fairly "tail". 1100hp gtr already gap the plaid. Go check it out on the tesla plaid channel..
There's something about that steering wheel that just feels downright dangerous...
if you look at common steering wheels for Dragster, its similar
Just a gimmick
There’s a reason they only use them in f1 cars because they need very little input to turn but also safety during a crash they can remove them and or less likely to smash into other things also visibility
you should be an engineer for formula cars and let them know.
@@ItalianMetalHED we’ll that’s stupid since you’re not going over 150 mph in a 90 degree turn in a Tesla…
Man those Tesla's are no freaking joke, my god.
Hopefully someday I can experience that.
No, they're poorly built one trick pony shit boxes. See if that thing can even go all the way around a track without breaking down or losing a wheel.
@@andrewdevine3920 Every ground breaking invention usually is, the first light bulbs only lasted a few seconds, but they changed everything. Just like Tesla is.
@@andrewdevine3920 oh here we go again
Get a test drive in one…..I did, and told the guy there is no way I can afford one, he laughed and said, man I work for Tesla and either can I! 😂
@@andrewdevine3920 Porsche is notoriously "famous" about its quality. Many people want to own a Porsche. But many when own a Porsche, they only want to get rid of it. They spend many months a year to fix a Porsche. Tesla is a sedan, it is still able to beat a Porsche. About "around a track", remind you it's a sedan, it doesn't need to be "around a track".
I would love to see a lap time for the model s. Given it’s weight and those breaking issues, I think the results would be interesting.
For lap times, you should probably equip the track-oriented brakes.
It would loose miserably thats why you see mostly drag races and not track races.
Why would it be? You already know the results. The model S is a 4 door sedan meant to haul people. Turbo S is a track car that is made for the street. That is a dumb ass question.
15 out of 10 people would take the 911, any day every day.
I see no lies...
I would take a stock gtr
Turbo S it is
No. I have the Plaid on order.
@@Jallu555 Outgunned by Turbo S in every category. Could be wrong, Nismo carries more power
This just goes to show exactly how well the Turbo S was engineered. It's got about 400 less horsepower than the Plaid, yet it's side by side on the launch and for a good portion of the race. The damn thing is a missile, and it's one of the best designed and manufactured cars ever in my opinion.
400kg lighter than the Tesla. It better get close! lol
Tesla is like Guitar Hero, the Porsche is like a 1960 Les Paul.
The Tesla is heavily, heavily underbraked. I'm not sure how it passed régulation
I don't know why they don't have a more aggresive regenerative mode (kinda "drag" or "race" mode) which works on situations like this when you're hardly accelerating past a certain speed
How? Lol
it needs the massive 10 piston calipers from the Porsche
It passed regulations because those brakes are conpletly fine for road usage. You won't ever race your car like that on the road, which is why it passed regulations.
On the track however, this is super dangerous. Not sure who thought that this was fine
Plaid mode is for fun. Its not something you do on a regular street. Those rich enough to own one are probably smart enough to know this
I love there reaction to the speed of the model S plaid and how it picks up speed and goes 😂😂
Just seeing these Cars going this fast is amazing. Great footage guys!
It would've been nice if they had recorded times for these vehicles on this particular day!
That 911 turbo:S is simply a beast.
U guys are the best car review channel anywhere! I really hope more people see ur channel!
The 911 +-400hp down was always going to struggle to win this race. The other thing that also really seems to make a difference is the lack of gear change on the Model S (all EVs really). Every time you see the 911 grab another gear the Model S is just stepping away. That gearbox in the 911 is insanely good - probably the best? - but against something that doesn't need to change at all it's always going to lose ground. Both cars are crazy fast. Great race.
The difference is flat instant torque from an ev and no gear change, that's it .
4:54 "I'm afraid of this thing if I'm honest."
That's respect for the machine and your brain looking out for you. Tesla Plaid buries the Bugatti in a straight line. That's an off-the-wall bonkers thought, holy crap.
Cheetah mode would blow well beyond my concept of excitement just sitting shotgun. Thanks for a great show, reminded me of some of my favorite old Top Gear episodes. Cheers.

Its a 2 door sports car with decades of engineering, the Plaid is the fastest groceries getter ever made. If it wasn't this close I would be worried for Porsche.
This video seemed odd, the gap between the two cars while racing was small compared to how it normally is…

Great video. Watching the CarWow's 911 Turbo S vs. the Taycan Turbo showed how insanely quick the 911 is. It would be interesting to see what the new Z06 does vs. the 911 Turbo S - but the latter will probably win, a more fair competition would be the new Z06 vs. the 911 GT3 RS.
I think the z06 would be a better match against a gt2rs
@@victorrosenbaum8588 Isn't the Gt2rs turbocharged? If so the GT3 seems the obvious contender.

The GT3 RS is a track focused weapon, not a drag racer. I want Porsche to make a three motor Taycan and call it the Turbo GT to go against the Plaid in a straight line and around track.
That 911 turbo is just awsome and you dont have to wait 8 minutes , it stops and goes round corners too , what more do you want.

Great an 8 minute warmup and no brakes after two "races", the Turbo S will run like that every time you press the throttle. I'll take the car with 50 years of racing heritage and good build quality all day, everyday. The Tesla is a circus tent freak show.
There are a lot of car reviewers on TH-cam. I think most of them do a pretty great job doing what they do, but the chemistry and humor these two have is unrivaled. Incredible, but not unexpected for a drag race. In terms of power/weight; Plaid @ 460 BHP/ton > Turbo S @ 389 BHP/ton. Also, if you consider torque/weight; Plaid @ 651 Nm/ton > Turbo S @ 485 Nm/ton.
So a tuned 911 Turbo S with 1000 HP would WIN for sure !!
No it wouldn't. You still don't get it
It would destroy them like nothing
Just 800hp and it would win
Problem is no car manufacture produce 1000+ hp ICE cars.
And Tesla is mass producing model s plaid.
everything above 500hp is unreliable when it comes to ICE cars.
Look after new M-Models from BMW and AMG.
It’s last of their generation.
This is one of the reasons I’m not really a fan of racing modified cars against factory cars in comparisons. It sort of defeats the whole point to me, at least if we are comparing cars as they were meant to be. Once you start making significant changes to performance, it’s no longer really the same vehicle. It also becomes much harder to draw a line in the sand.
Plaid is insane but looking at the turbo with almost half the hp is still super impressive
And also normal engine so no instant power
Dont forget the weight difference, the understated Power from Porsche and the fact the Plaid has only above 1000hp which drops the faster it goes.
Its also a LOT lighter
And the Porsche is still the car I'd take
@@Shift4g that's good! If had the choice between the Turbo S and plaid I would go for the plaid, but if it was a GT3(RS), I would definitely take that.

For those wondering the plaid doesn't actually make 1000 hp until about 70-80 mph. We don't have enough traction in street tires to put out a full 1000 hp of the rip. Prob makes 680-800 ish under that speed which explains the launch being close
