DINKY TOYS RESTORATION ROLLS ROYCE PHANTOM V

  • My first restoration was the Rolls Royce Silver Wraith, this is another Rolls Royce, the Phantom V, the early version with 2 headlamps. This was released in 1962 and Dinky was in hard competition with Corgi and others for this section of the toy market. Even more 'gadgetry' and plastic went into the later models which takes them out of my area on interest.

¡Hola buenas tardes David! Seeing you preparing the thin, blue masking tape, I now know who taught the ‘saints’. With patience like that you deserve a medal. Well worth it in the end and, again a mention in dispatches for the door panel save. Your honesty regarding the paint colour, shows a true professional. After all, other than another toy car restorer, the rest of us would never have known. As ever, stay safe and well. Un saludo. Gary

looking spiffy again. :) the darkish silver looks good with the white flanks. ^^
here is an idea regarding the colour: if you're looking for a light green metallic, Mercedes used to have a pastel-y light green named "Silberdistel" (silver thistle, no idea how they called it in england). it is finely pigmented, too, and might work well for 60's luxury cars.
as for masking: would it work out if you put a wide masking strip across the flanks before adding basecoating, and cut it out with an xacto, and place the mask on a glass sheet? (using a sticker backing sheet came to mind at first, but they are coated with silicone, so it would be a bad idea really)
keep up your awesome works, and happy new year, and stay safe, everyone!

When doing 2 tone paint schemes, you can 'seal' the first coat by overspraying with clear. Then when you add any masking tape it will stop the chance of any paint tear off plus, if you do get any bleed, can gently remove by sanding or other methods.

You can make a new flying lady by drilling the top of the grill with a 1.5 mm drill, then a piece of copper wire glued in and dressed to form the lady, as copper is soft it’s easy to form with pliers and files, then chrome touch up stick.

Cracking restoration. Those colours look great. Love your straight lines. Like you, many of my early efforts at 2 toning were frequently thwarted by paint lifting. It's like no primer ever adheres to the casting. Even mono colours can react & easily chip at times. Appreciate it's extra cost, but have found etch primer to work in most cases. I believe it has an acid content that "welds" itself to the casting, assisting subsequent coats to stay down. I used to stick with hycote 400ml for about £8 a can. I've since found a brand called upol & for £6.60, I got 500ml. Tho our tastes in final finish vary, I do like watching your channel. Your models are always superbly finished
