    Thomas Dunford is a marvellous musician with great maturity and perfect command of his instrument. It is a real pleasure to listen to this outstanding young man.

    Magnifique! C'est le Bach le plus intime qu'on peut découvrir grâce au luth. Merci Monsieur Dunford.

    I don't care how many strings he does or doesn't have! I love hearing any music of this quality.Not a player of lute or guitar,but did go up to grade 5 flute,so at a basic level. I am now going to seek out music played on a double-strung lute and see what the difference ie.Meanwhile I am quite happy having found Thomas Dunford playing his hybrid :)

    Just can’t believe the negative comments on here- This guy is a Total genius. There’s all the other lutenists ( most of them are terrified by Tom’s amazing talent) and then about a mile above is Tom - unequalled amazing proficiency and fabulous musicianship- I speak from the privileged position as a colleague and fan- he’s a total joy to work with. Respect.

      What negative comments? :-) We all are apparently grateful and filled with joy when listening to him. And personally every time I meet him in Thiré I am also pleased to see how "completely normal and down to earth" he is. In brief, just a delight of a human being. Well... listening again.

      I don't think anyone is questioning his talent or ability, nor would I say they're "terrified" of it, considering the plethora of young talent these days.
      What IS unfortunate is the vehicle he chooses to use- a single-strung archlute, which is easier to play than a real lute, BTW. Imagine Evgeny Kissin playing Chopin etudes on a Fender Rhodes electric piano.

      Kanal 3 Can’t we all just appreciate the artistry here on display rather than nitpick about the instrument being used? It’s a lovely performance, and I couldn’t care less that’s it’s not being played on a baroque lute.

    Muy Bien! El archilaud de cuerda simple es un instrumento contemporáneo de Bach, igual que el laud barroco, la tiorba y muchísimos instrumentos de la familia del laud. Bach no tocaba el laud y de tocar algo lo tocaría en un laud standard que era el laud con afinación renacentista, como este video, ya sea con cuerda simple y o doble, como todos podemos encontrar en las referencias escritas. Eso si en esta afinación y con un artista como Thomas, suena genial. Aupa Thomas!

    Several times, playing fast passages, he does not alternate thumb/finger, but he plucks the strings with the index finger only, repeating that for 3/4 notes. I wonder who was his teacher.

    • @alexdevalera4550
      @alexdevalera4550 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He had the best of teachers : Claire Antonini, Charles Edouard Fantin, Hopkinson Smith and Paul O'dette, but when you play a theorbo or an archlute you anticipate the basses and keep your thumb on the bass strings, he repeats the index because he is keeping contact with the strings or avoiding parasite sounds, or because he seeks to get the same type of sound in the melodic line. I just listen, I don't care wether he plays with one finger or with his toes. By the way I also studied with Hopkingson Smith and Paul Odette back in the late eighties and early nineties.

    Unfortunately, this performance is on a "lute-shape instrument" but by far not on a baroque lute. Apparently the young musician misses the idea and ideal of baroque lute sound and technique. He treats the instrument like a guitar. The type of string material is by far not authentic to what has been used in Bach's time. I am sorry, he should continue studying the guitar and not missinterpreting lute music.

    • @ghmus7
      @ghmus7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He may be a good lutenist, but the instrument is all wrong, it is not an historical instrument. There is no point is playing Bach on a lute if it is not the 18th century instrument that Bach knew.

    • @michaelhooper7587
      @michaelhooper7587 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm afraid you are full of bunk here. This is definitely a lute and Tom is a master musician as this is an archlute with 16 strings and very hard to play.

    • @waterkingdavid
      @waterkingdavid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No you've entirely missed the point. The point is that music is to inspire joy. To inspire the joy of existence and creation.
      That's certainly what Bach and all other deeply inspired composers and musicians understand.
      But if you wish to be contrary and negative go ahead. But Bach wouldn't have agreed with you.
