J.S. Bach: Complete Lute Music

- No more than a handful of pieces represent the entire musical heritage for baroque lute by Johann Sebastian Bach - not a lot when we consider the enormity of the composer’s total output. Although it is not known whether Bach himself played the instrument, the seven works which are ascribable to it continue to enjoy extraordinary attention on the part of musicians due to their exceptional quality, and indeed the majority originate from the areas of Germany that were home to the lute’s greatest exponents - musicians who we can be almost certain the composer came into contact with.
This recording thus presents four compositions in suite form and three pieces of a different nature, all belonging to the florid repertoire of the courtly Salonmusik that was in vogue among the German upper classes at the time. Performing them is acclaimed Italian lutenist Mario D’Agosto, whose changes in tonality aim to better serve the capacities of the instrument (BWV 996 and 997, for instance, were written for the ‘Lautenwerk’, a sort of lute-harpsichord favoured by Bach) and whose embellishments are testament to the high level of ornamentation which played such an intrinsic role in baroque performance practice.

REST IN PEACE Mario D'Agosto.... He died a few days ago. He was my guitar teacher in public middle school in Rome, Italy.
An incredibly patient and loving teacher and person, he emanated class and beauty in abundance. Truly a man form another time. He looked like he came out of the Baroque era to bring us some beauty.
I really adored him and looked at him as the ultimate role model, until at some point I was foolish enough to "rebel" because I wanted to play electric guitar while I "had to" play classical guitar at school.
Instead of giving me bad grades or hard times, he let me play the electric guitar in most lessons and agreed on teaching me classical harmony instead of classical guitar playing, execution, reading etc.
At the final exam, I was the only one with an electric guitar, playing a version of "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" arranged by the two of us. The first part was a "baroque" arrangement of the jazz piece and the second was me improvising over the chord changes... That was quite unheard of in that school.
He put a lot of trust in me even if I didn't really want to follow the classical path.
That goes to show what an intelligent and caring individual he was.
I still stand by that choice as the electric guitar is still my main instrument, but in the last 2-3 years of development as a musician, I came to realize how huge Mario's impact was on me in my early years of guitar playing.
An incredible soul and what an incredible player. He played with the same grace he talked and gave precious advice to those who really wanted to learn.
I'm terribly sorry about his passing.
thank you for sharing! I think it's difficult for teachers to embrace alternative students because it requires more skill and flexibility on their part. Thus many default to imposing tradition. It reflects very well on him, that he worked with you and encouraged your growth. :)
@@marymills3581 Thank you! That's really true and I've never actually seen it that way,
Thanks for this.
You're a lucky man Leonardo. One may not expect to be blessed in one's limited lifetime with encounters with persons of Mario d'Agosto's humble brilliance, perfect talent, breadth of comprehension and, well, clairvoyance if I may risk the word. Nonetheless I totally understand your move towards electric. I'm truly sorry for your - and our - loss.
He let you play the instrument that resonate in your heart because he understood that music is about LOVE, with love you can create the most beautiful things. The reason you feel bad about is passing is because he did what every great teacher does. Help us grow with compasion, understanding, aceptance and love. He made you a better version of yourself.
"Bach is the father of us all." - Mozart
But which Bach is it? That is the question.
@@umutdoga2494 Johann Sebastian Bach
yes but he was referring to cpe not js. Mozart was a scatologist.
@@militaryandemergencyservic3286 yes it was C.P.E Bach
He said that about his teacher CPE Bach. Mozart was greatly influenced by Bach other son JC as well.
Mozart owes everything to the Bach family. Needless to say that he had tremendous respect for their father JSB.
Lute music is perfect for reading a book. I love Bach.
What book are you reading now?
bruh i'm just here for music homework
th-cam.com/video/7MRnlyL-FW4/w-d-xo.html try this, some really good guitar music, only 300 views T_T
Agree, although it also depends on the type of book
You’re right. It’s also perfect if you spend all day writing about castles for sale!
I use this for therapy, I'm a psychologist and I work with children with different types of autism. Thank you for posting it !
Beautiful, I also like Vivaldi, his lute and mandolin compositions are excellent too 😊
The best music never dies...
This presentation deserves many more listeners. Mario D'Agosto & Brilliant Classics deserve our applause.
God is the father from us all. Bach wrote all his music for his glory.
Made the god fella look pretty good eh? 😂
Bach's compositions are so pleasing. At one point, to think he was going through each of these songs- building them for the first time note by note- pausing to decide.. And we may hear it now today still. Amazing
Didn’t know I liked classical music until today so thank you

Because the best music ends with the end of baroque...
It's not classical but baroque, anyway, it is good to start with it if you want to enter into the beautiful and magic world of academic music.
Classical music's ability to evoke a wide range of emotions, from the triumphant notes of a symphony to the gentle strains of a nocturne, makes it a versatile and profound art form. 🎭🎵💔
Incredibly difficult. Impressive as any piece.
Bach came to earth to teach us how music should be.
God of music..
No words… Other than perfection.
This, hot tea, and the autumn weather...
That makes for a perfect evening.

plus a good book, and a sleeping cat on your lap
Bach‘s wonderfulness and comfort are off the charts
Played this before sleep, stayed awake cause my brows were high af.
XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Love you man
Bach & the lute are getting me through these difficult times...
The sound of Bach' s Lute makes me feel peaceful and calm , and immeasurable , unfathomable and comfortable to the ear and the mind
I play classical guitar and learnt Bach's first lute suite. I tried to play it on a lute and found it far harder than guitar, so am awestruck by the quality of this playing. The cover painting is Self portrait as a lute player by Artemisia Gentileschi, born 1593.
It’s actually more likely that his “lute suites” were written for the lautenwerk a lute like harpsichord, not an actual lute.
Learnt?
@@nehuge Learnt and learned are two different spellings of the past tense of the verb “learn,” which means “gain knowledge or skill” or “come to be able to do something.” The spelling tends to vary based on whether you use US or UK English: In UK English, “learnt” is standard. In US English, “learned” is more common.

I love most music, but Renaissance and Baroque lute music was my go-to study music all through the various colleges. It was hard to find in many times and places, but Julien Bream, Nigel North, and Paul O'Dette got me through a lot of papers.
The idea that I could just plug in and listen to this for free would have blown my delicate young mind.
Fly, melody, fly like a bachterfly!
I am always overwhelmed by the indescribable beauty Bach infuses into each and every piece of his immense and unsurpassed body of work. Bach is a self-sufficient wonder and does not require the skills of any interpreter to bring the marvel out of the scripture. But it appears Mario d'Agosto quite simply became Sebastian for the purposes of this recording. How wonderful, I am so grateful. I am also incredibly sorry to hear he passed a short while ago, especially after reading Leonardo Mirenda's earlier entry .
Bach is the father of music as we know it even though he was from the Baroque Era
J S Bach was introduced to the famous Lute virtuoso Silvius Leopold Weiss through his eldest son W F Bach.
I love J. S. Bach! Greetings From Brazil

Bach é bom demais.
J S Bach music can be for serious music study such as his Art of Fugue and Well Tempered Klavier and also for complete relaxation like his lute music. Thanks very much for sharing.
Underappreciated masterpieces. Great for setting an atmosphere for DnD campaigns!

stunning beautiful lute music.
What great improvisation, technique and musicality....certainly one of the greats
Beguiling music and great execution Tepper Michael.
Excellent performance, very powerfully played, I love it.
Reading a book on Freemasonry while i am imagining myself in an inn in Skyrim with a room to myself. Kicking back on my bed for the day, weary of my travels and enjoying a good book while the bard is playing his lute just outside my door.
Bach is for sure from another Galaxy.
So sublime. 997 is a gem for the soul ❤️
Thank You very much, I really love this music, and it is perfect played. Best whishes from Cologne, Udo Kamjunke
Bach was a professional who undoubtedly wrote for whatever instruments his customers paid him to whether he personally played those instruments or not (as I recall, he was primarily an organist). The lute was still a popular instrument in his day, so it would have been surprising if he didn't write for it.

Nossa! Dormi ouvindo essas peças. Quase perco meu compromisso!
Have i already said i want a Brilliant Classics T-shirt?
Bellissimo!
Beautifully & strongly played; very well produced. I think D'Agosto's approach to the ornamentation is quite masterful; &, to my ear, sounds authentic - the lute itself, & his skill, allow a powerful continuo feeling, "momentum," if you like, in the resonant bass strings, while, of course, embellishments are expressed most clearly in the treble. Far from flashy - understated, inspiring, worthy of Bach, in his day or ours. Thanks!
Don't forget to mention the skillfull and well-chosen dampening of the bass-strings! This is very difficult to master (I know what I am talking about) and very important on the baroque lute.
Who would dislike this?

This is great! Bach is my favorite composer. Great video, but one caveat...for some reason the audio cuts out at about 1:23:00 or thereabouts. I know it's not my device, because I have a nature video also playing, and the sound on it is fine. Odd. Well, on to a Mozart or Impressionist video I see that you have in my Recommends. Again, another than that one snag, this is a great video that I enjoyed very much!
I like the change of recording timbre in the bouree (Mic position seems different).

Bach is my favorite composer followed by Mozart & Beethoven from a foundation of five years of classical piano lessons in my youth. Beautiful music here. Inspires me to learn how to play the lute.

I recognize the courante in the g minor suite as the courante in cello suite no. 5 in c minor. I wonder if any of the other pieces were recycled.

I used to included long silent intervals in audio mix tapes that I played in my shop. Found it helpful to work quietly in silence from time to time. When friends were over, they’d often wonder aloud where did that music come from as the quiet interval ended. Almost forgot that I used to do that since no one uses tape anymore.
