      Connect it to an external monitor. You need an adapter thing with an HDMI.

    Hello, I have a MacBook Pro 2016 with Touch Bar. If I start my computer I can hear the ‘Apple Start Song’ and I can activate my Caps Lock. But nothing more, my screen is totally black. I don’t see any Apple Logo , only black screen.
    I tried to boot from external disk , restart , do Shift + Start , do Command + Option , do Command + Option + P + R , do anything.
    Do you have any idea to me ? To restart my MacBook Pro please ?

    my macbook pro starts prompts user name when I power on and enable voiceover on dark screen. It says "username", I enter, then it says "password", I enter and then there are 3 beeps and after a minute or so the external monitor shows and I am able to use computer normally BUT the laptop screen has never come back alive yet. I even upgraded from catalina to the latest monterey OS on dark screen and tried these steps but the laptop screen stays dark.

      This is my exact same issue! Did you ever solve it

  • @galefraney
    @galefraney 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Uhhh ... I tried every single step ... but you seem to forget that MacBooks with black screen cannot see the screen when booting up in "Safe Mode" because the screen is 100% black ... even if I connect to 2nd monitor, that monitor also does not display the screen. I've spent more than a week trouble shooting not only this black screen issue, but also huge vertical stripes down the screen of my M1 (Max) 16" MacBook Pro that has barely been used since I bought it last December. The screen suddenly went black and I wasted many hours doing every "Reset" suggestion under the sun, and when it comes back for a short time, it then goes black again, over and over.
    I phoned Apple, I have Apple Care ... their tech staff sound fairly clueless ... had to do my own online research and stumbled across a bunch of articles stating that a Class Action Lawsuit was launched last year against Apple for this exact same issue!!! It states that Apple has been knowingly suppressing this issue by erasing customers comments about this on Apple Forum. Apple is now Appealing this lawsuit. Apparently Apple has been making money hand over fist by charging people up to $850 (US) or more to "fix" the issue, only to have it re-emerge a few months later. This is unethical and downright dishonest.
    I'm thoroughly pissed off ... will contact Apple again (have already contacted them 2 times) ... but am waiting to first cool down a bit ... I want to be sure I'm in a clear state of mind when I speak to them to ask for either a full replacement (only if they've now permanently fixed the screen hardware issue) ... or else I'll ask for a full refund.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there. Thanks for checking out the video.
      These steps are only helpful if it is a software related issue. If the video card or motherboard is at fault Apple should fix it or replace it for free under warranty. They are usually very obliging so don’t stress too much about it. I’m sure they will look after you.

    • @galefraney
      @galefraney 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Touchtechnologyreview ... If you are talking about black screen in 2022, you should at least include a few sentences about the ongoing issue related to what has been dubbed "FlexGate", which is an "extraordinarily fragile" (according to the Class Action Lawsuit) flex ribbon display cable that causes the screen to go completely black or to have thick vertical stripes down the entire screen, as I have experienced with my $6000 (Canadian dollar) fully spec'ed out M1 (Max) 16" MacBook Pro that has barely been used and I handle with care.
      Over the past few days, experiencing this issue ... and with Apple's phone support seeming clueless although they no doubt completely know about this continued, ongoing issue and are making money hand over fist charging customers whose warranty's have expired over $800 to replace the entire screen because of the way this flimsy ribbon display cable has been installed, it cannot simply be a replacement of the $6 cable ... the entire screen must be replaced!!
      In a video uploaded by iFixit from 2019, entitled: The Design Flaw Behind MacBook Pro's "Stage Light" Effect!" #Flexgate he shows the innards of the laptop, and explains that it's not only the flimsy ribbon display cable, but the way it's been wrapped around the display card that each time the laptop is opened it is pulled taut and rubs against the sharp edge of the card causing the screen to eventually fail (and go black or develop "stage lighting ... then progress to fully black screen ... or the vertical stripes, etc).
      I spent more than a week of my own time researching this issue because Apple Tech phone support are too unethical to openly admit to this issue, so they play dumb and if a customer doesn't have the motivation to research and troubleshoot this issue on their own, then they hand over their computer to Apple to be torn open and have a 'new' screen installed with the same flimsy display ribbon cable ... and according to the Class Action Law Suit, many customers, after doling out more than $800 for the so-called "fix", have the exact same problem re-occur a few months later! Yah ... I'm pissed ... was an Apple fan girl ... have been buying Mac devices since 2007 ... am usually the person to stick up for Apple in TH-cam comments when people criticize Apple ... but knowing that Apple has known about this issue for several years, and according to iFixit and also mentioned in the Class Action Lawsuit, Apple has 'removed' posts about this issue on its Forum .... yeah ... that about sums it up.

      @@galefraney It is such a shame when this type of thing happens as usually their products are so great. In terms of this issue I don't really know enough about it. However if it is a recurring issue I can only say that Apple should really stand by their products and fix the problem! This tutorial really is only for those experiencing the black screen due to issues software issues. This has happened to me only once over my 4 or 5 Macbook Pros and to a couple of friends and clients who I have assisted in restoring their Macs. Thankfully all times it has happened, One of these fixes has done the trick. As for this specific hardware issue, once again, it is going to be up to Apple to fix it and certainly I agree they should look after their loyal customers as a priority.

    Resetting the SMC worked, thanks! I have a 2016 13inch Macbook Pro. There’s a crack on the area below the display, near where it says macbook pro. This and the computer showing its age & problems arising (dropping it a few times even with a case doesn’t help lmao) means I’ll need to upgrade soon. I would pay more for a durable laptop tbh. These other features that Apple & other laptop manufacturers focus on are somewhat superfluous

    Step 3 worked like a charm. My Buddy has a 2 Mac book Pro's both about 7 yrs old now .1 had water spilled on the keyboard a few yrs back, chimes at start up but screen is black ( I suspect the Graphics card needs replaced) . The replacement was working great, then one day it just went black. I told him I would look at them both as he was going to use them for target practice 😳.
    I am Very Grateful, and so is he , that I found this video. When I watched the video I had gone threw 1, 2 & 4, I knew these hacks but I Never even knew about step 3! Upon trying this step it chimed 3 times and Low and Behold the Screen lit up asking for his Password. So tomorrow we see if it will indeed continue to work Fingers Crossed.

    hi, quick question, does it erases your files or do I have to make a backup? my macbook Pro, (2016) started doing it now, the lid goes off after 70 degrees opened thanks

    • @Touchtechnologyreview

      When the screen goes black it is usually related to the motherboard/video card. However there is a chance that it could be something to so with the SSD so if you can connect an external drive and back up data now while you still can see the screen that would be wise.

    I tried every step and no matter what my screen just stays black now I'm not going to act like I don't know what happened this is a used macbook I've had it 42 years and I've dropped it recently I can see the green light indicator for my cat locks but my screen is just black I've tried every single step I can hear it cutting on but I just can't see my screen it's really confusing

    My MBP 16in had the black screen of death yesterday while I was in the middle of playing my computer game. It comes back on and there is now a 2in wide vertical line going down the left side of the screen and it’s got vertical lines as well. Done all these steps and even spoke to apple support. Not overheating, never dropped it, nothing… now I’m having to send it to Apple to try to fix if I can’t fix it myself.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      when you see a line on the screen it can often indicate a hardware fault with the motherboard/video card. If you have tried the steps in this video to no avail, you would need to take it in to Apple for them to diagnose.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have tried all these options then it indicates a possible problem with the video card. As such you may need to take it in to Apple to have it checked.

      So when I was trying to do smc reset, I’ve plugged in my power source I’ve got the same settings as above. I’m starting to think it might be my graphics. Might need to get an external monitor 🤔

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ffossip Yes if you can test with an external monitor that would help determine if it is the graphics card. Did you try the final step to boot up in safe mode?

    • @ffossip
      @ffossip 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Touchtechnologyreview just tried safe mode but it doesn’t work. There isn’t even any sound or logo 🫤

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ffossip See how you go once connecting to external monitor. But I would say that after trying all these things and not getting any response it must be a hardware issue. So you will most likely need to take it in to an Apple Repairer.
