  • Learning to pumpfoil is not that easy. First you have to master the dockstart and then learn the pumping technique to get into a nice pumping pattern.
    Very often I observe beginners who manage the dockstart, however, after three or four pumps they loose speed and cannot continue their ride.
    One of the most common mistakes is the position and weight distribution on the board. In this video, I will explain you why the body position is so important when pumpfoiling.

      I would assume that you understand with "efficient pumpfoing" that you want to do loger runs and for that minimiziing the energy consumption, right?
      Well, I would need to do some more research and testing to provide an answers with „a solid foundation“. May others have already a precise answer to this?
      I would say that we basically have to keep the drag low. As the drag is not linear in comparison to the angle of attack (definition angle of attack: pumpfoilers.ch/en/physics-of-a-hydrofoil/ ) , we have to make sure that the angle of attack is never too big during the pumpoing circle. Reason for that is, that with a higher angle of attack the drag increases. In addition to that, I would recommend to do „more flat pumps“ and not "too steep" ones. In addition to that, I also recommend to use the full body to induce the required push instead only pumping with the legs.

    How do you prevent from falling forward? When I put my weight forward, the board directly dives into the water

      Hi, the exact position depends on the setup you use. Whenever I use a new setup, I first check where the Frontwing is. For the first ‚jump‘ I then try to keep the center of my body right above the wing. However, other reasons that the board dives directly into the water mybe not enough initial push (not enough speed) of the board or also the alignment of the board.

    Hi. First of all, congratulations on your progress!
    I am trying to learn how to pump and I feel my progress is kind of slow. Not that I am stuck, but certainly I was hoping to progress a bit faster at this stage.

    For some reason I struggle to maintain speed and altitud and I end up touching the water. I don't stall so often now like I did before, but still I cannot pump more than 15 or 20 seconds when I'm lucky.
    I thought you migtht be able to give me some advice. I would really appreciate it.
    I am using a GONG FOIL ALLVATOR FRONT WING X-OVER - XXL (2200cm) and a GONG Matata board 4'2. My weight is 70kg.

      Hi Andres, already looks good. What I would try to pump more with the ‘full body’ and do it with more power. In quite some of your runs, the hips stay at the same height. What I want to say that you only pump with the legs. So try to give a strong push in the downwards movement. When you go up, stretch the body more through and relieve to pressure on the board. You need that phase to give the board time to get up and gain height. ‘Try to jump upwards in a 45 degree angle to the front’.
