Trying to start, jumping on the Foilboard and just glide as long as possible before adding the Pump is also a good learning step to maintain your balance and proper foot placement/weight distribution. Enjoy your tutorials
@@woodythetuber Yup! The initial glide can help get ur balance and foot placement like IRWE905 said however, make sure u start the pump before u lose to much speed otherwise the recovery will be that much harder! Speed is ur friend.
I learned on a Indiana 1100P. Great low speed start ability for a reasonable price. For the technique: I learned the hard way. the key to recovering from a touchdown is to keep fxxxx pumping and waving your arms like a madman. 😂 The board WILL rise with commitment. Keep going and going. The hard work will pay off !
Great video! I recently came to the exact same conclusion. I am now using FoilDrive to get me up and Foil and then I pop up above the motor to practice pumping. I’m using the good old Slingshot infinity-99 but I’m about to invest in Sabfoil. Let’s see if the WL1150 is big enough to carry my 82kg plus wetsuit so that I can get to know it for light downwinding way down the line when my skills are sufficient!
Great vid. Had my first session today. On my own because I want to bust this out on my mates at some random point in the future. Based on my progress today this might be about 5 years from now. I dinged my board, bashed my elbow and gathered multiple grazes from various impacts. We are all wing foilers and windsurfers so it would be cool to get the drop on them in this new discipline. Take off is ok but recovery is terrible. Haven't even got to the pump stage. Usually just nose down straight into the water. I appreciate that this might be a long road. I was using all Armstrong gear. A 38 litre prone board, 85cm mast, 1550 front foil and 195 rear.
Great video, I learnt Dockstart foiling from scratch off various ladder setups (settled on the #dockstar ladder in the end). It took ages but so worth it! I use a slight variation of your mates technique and have a 90% success rate. Keep doing the videos I learn a lot from them and as your video rightly points out my pump game is not the best…yet. I’m on a Naish 5ft with Axis 1150 and 450 progressive.
i use the gong curve xlt complete foil set for 600€ and its a nice alternative to get in to this awsome sport i am able to dead start with my 78kg. Longest Pumping distace was 250m with back wind :)
First I'm your favorite fan, second I'm 165lb and dock starting on your old Naish 1250 ha wing, third I got my buddy at 260lb dock starting, fourth the wing u need in your quiver better than than the 1099 is the new north sonar ha foils, turns really steep and glides like your axis, 😁😁😁😁
Thanks! The new north wings do look really good. And a big variety by the looks. I’m on the BSC and HPS wings mainly these days. I’ll Have to do an updated quiver video :)
Hello, I think this video is suitable for athletes who have already a good level at surfoiling. For more "common" people, I would advise to avoid the recovery step by setting a reproducible launch that gives enough initial speed: run along a low dock and climb (not jump) on the board with still both hands on board, or using a holder (choice will mainly depend on what dock you have in your zone: low, stable and room for the wing under the dock: run. High or no room for the wing under: holder).
Dockstarting with friends is way better than doing it alone - totally agree with you! Find someone who's willing to get hurt, share your gear and off you go 🤙I pump on the Axis 1150, 1300 and 1310. At the moment the 1300 is my favourite.
@@davewestfoils My personal best was on the 1300, but I can't really compare it to the 1310 since I've only pumped it in colder conditions with a wetsuit on... It's more complicated to dockstart and pump, that's for sure.
@@salihzeka775 The 1310 pumps with less effort but is way harder to dock start. Are you a beginner? I would start out with the 1150. Unless you want to also wing then start with the 1300 as it’s faster. Only buy the 1310 if you’re an experienced dock starter.
Great vid! There’s no docks where I live (La Ventana MX) just miles of sandy beaches 😅 was trying last summer to do the beach start 😂 I get close but couldn’t make it. Need to figure out a way to make some sort of platform try this. Thanks for the vid! I’m riding axis HPS1050, 880, 700.
Hey Kane - I probably would gravitate toward the flatwater PUP now to make sure I keep my fitness up in that regard. We’ve had so much wind and waves lately I haven’t dockstarted in a long while.
I have Cabrinha macro 5'4 (98 litters) board with Cab fusion x1600 foil, which is I think designed more for winging. Can I try dock starts with this setup or it will be waste of time?

Hey Dave, where is this dock? Im coming to Qld soon and need a spot but I have no idea where. We were using GoFoil GT1250 and NL160 with 14” tails and were failing terribly. So we switched up to a GT2200 with a 17” tail and its got so much glide you could almost dock start from ankle deep flat water. Still havent got to pumping stage 3 on it after 25 attempts yesterday but were getting close for a couple of old newbs
@@davewestfoils Out water temp gets down as low as 3 in the winter. It's currently still 10, so not that freezing yet, but the air has only been up to 4 or 5 degrees the last few days. But I do have a 6mm hooded wetsuit.

Sounds like it was certainly an adventure haha! 1550 isn't the easiest wing to dockstart so if you get it you should be very proud :)

Haha I think it’s just an ordinary Bunnings ladder. Nothing special.
Nice vid Dave well said I learned without knowing how to pump. Took me 10 months to learn 😂
And yeah definitely much better to dockstart with friends

Beach starts on a 1050 wouldn't be easy. I don't think I'd ever be able to do that. Definitely need something a bit bigger for that.

have you seen the new downwind designs they look awsome
Yeah Id be keen to get my hands on one for sure! Both the Hybrid and the DW 7'6.
Mate, you're doing the absolute hardest method for dock starts.
THis is a really old video. I don't do it like that anymore.

Is "double groper" viable for beach starts? Every video I've seen they have hands on top of the board

That foil can be dockstarted but you'll need a fair bit of speed off the dock.
Going to try this sometime. What stab do you recommend (I'm a similar weight to you)
400p has been great. Too big of. stab and it's actually alot harder because you can't course correct when you land.

@Miha Zidar Thanks for responding. My rear wing is HA 220. Do I need a bigger one?

No idea what that is. Seems a bit spammy.
let me explain: you haven't tried enough - this is ALL about repetition
Nah it's about working smart. Learning to pump from dock starting is extremely inefficient. If you're able to - there are better ways.
Looks like a lot of work to me lol
