It doesn’t seem like positive/negative conventions are standardized yet. Elsewhere I’ve seen any shim that adds overall foil setup lift called “Positive”, regardless of whether the stabilizer is mounted above or below the fuselage.
Hi, thanks for your comment. I agree, as far as I know there is no standardization. Therefore, I recommend to always refer to the overview shown at 07:26 and check what effect you want to achieve and how your setup looks like.
Nice view ... ;-)
Getting epilepsy strike because of that edit 😅
Nice analysis. Might be also useful to mention how longer/shorter mast affect complete begginers at your courses and what length you recommend for them.
Hello @pkundrat, great that you like the analysis and your comment. May I could have highlighted that more. Will consider that for new videos. I mentioned that indirectly in sectio n "04:16 Is a long or short mast more difficult for pumpfoiling" A longer mast is more agile and perceived as less stable. I think a mast around +/- 75cm is ideal for beginners. That is also the mast length I use most in my training courses.
Awesome nerdy video exactly what i was looking for. One question remains, though: can you pump longer/is it less exhausting to pumo with a longer mast as the force generated with the same tilt angle is greater or does it not matter at all? 🤔
Hi, happy to hear that you like the video! Well, really good question. I would say it does not matter too much as the tilt angle changes during the pumping cicle from + over 0 to - position, so lesst impact due to that comparable to other factors that influence for how long you can pump (rhythm, position on the board respectively position of the body and how you transfer the mass energy of the body onto the board, ...). However, what you will have with a longer mast is a longer glide phase - while going from the highest to the lowest position - which you can then use for relaxation...
Yes thanks i needed that!!😂
Nice ! 👍

Great info! How dangerous is flat water at fairly slow speeds? totally kidding. I've had a concussion from falling at walking speed on a off-road trip. Just kidding. Foils are sketchy. Biggest issues I've ever had are flying off the side over the rail and seeing a wing tip. My buddy cut his head open and needed stitches. He also hit his ear and messed up his hearing. Another friend felt the wing hit his jugular. At a minimum, I think a Simba Sentinel helmet is necessary at least when learning. Eventually you learn how to fall, but sketchy stuff happens. I'm sure you get close to boats, docks, buoys, etc.
Hi, agree the sharp edges of the foils "are not nice when you meet them too close". Hope your buddy and friend is fine again! Fully agree, a helmet is the minimum, at least in the beginning!
Do a vid on positive mast shim
Hi, here it comes: th-cam.com/video/Togn7b6X3zI/w-d-xo.html - hope it helps!
Hi. First of all, congratulations on your progress! I am trying to learn how to pump and I feel my progress is kind of slow. Not that I am stuck, but certainly I was hoping to progress a bit faster at this stage. If you have time, would you mind having a look at this video and letting me know your opinion? th-cam.com/video/UEE1DQcoX84/w-d-xo.html For some reason I struggle to maintain speed and altitud and I end up touching the water. I don't stall so often now like I did before, but still I cannot pump more than 15 or 20 seconds when I'm lucky. I thought you migtht be able to give me some advice. I would really appreciate it. I am using a GONG FOIL ALLVATOR FRONT WING X-OVER - XXL (2200cm) and a GONG Matata board 4'2. My weight is 70kg. Thank you so much in advance for your help!
Hi Andres, already looks good. What I would try to pump more with the ‘full body’ and do it with more power. In quite some of your runs, the hips stay at the same height. What I want to say that you only pump with the legs. So try to give a strong push in the downwards movement. When you go up, stretch the body more through and relieve to pressure on the board. You need that phase to give the board time to get up and gain height. ‘Try to jump upwards in a 45 degree angle to the front’. That is also the reason why you very often see the backfoot of pumpfoilers lifting up in the beginning. -> instagram.com/reel/ChaaVullz9W/?igshid=ODhhZWM5NmIwOQ== I am sure you will manage! Please also feel free to subscribe to my channel, may I once have to do a movie about that: th-cam.com/channels/sNgFH9DNNeP4nmNocjyYAQ.html
I always wear an Impact Vest, Helmet and Mouthguard when PumpFoiling. I find the Mouthgurad not only protects my teeth but my Brain as it helps to brace my jaw/skull on impact when falling backwards. I also believe one of the keys to lessen the chance of injury is to know how/when to fall
Hi @Irwe905 thanks for your comment. I agree that it is very important to make people aware how to fall and what not to do. When I give training courses, I also make them aware and so far, I luckily never had an accident in a training course.
I understand the increased drag of a longer mast - what I still have not figured out is the effect of conservation of angular momentum. In my mind - for a fixed rotation speed the foil must travel slower thru the water than a short mast does, but crucially the foil travels further so may generate more lift in total ( provided you have overcome the surface friction and have actually taken off ). I think if you have the power and technique the longer mast can be better - if you are struggling to take off shorter is better as there is less drag AND you generate more foil speed.
Sick!!
You should try it out - it's fun!
@@philipp4u2_thefoiler99 Yes I am! But it's kinda hard.I can only pump for like 30s max. I hope that I can make it 60s soon!
What kind of foil do you use?
@@philipp4u2_thefoiler99 Axis HPS1050, my weight is 77kg
Great effort at explaining the difference between a longer and shorter mast. Thanks. But is it possible that with a longer mast since you are higher above the water and driving the board down that you generate more power and therefore also more speed? What do you think?
Thanks for your comment and great that you like the video! Well thanks to the longer lever you may can get a little bit more quick-energy into the system. The increase in the speed / accelleration is for a great amount coming from the energy you 'inject' into the system, means the moment when you push the board with the backfoot from the downwards to the upwards movement. However, I think that the longer lever is very small compared to what impacts the power you inject in the system. But may some others here have some experience? May I have to try it myself and do some calculations around that...
@@philipp4u2_thefoiler99 Thanks for the video Philipp. I agree, the energy that goes into the downward speed because of a longer mast has to go into the energy to rise again to the top level that it originally came from. (First law of thermodynamics.) so the only energy difference in reality is that you have a longer glide time and can relax But then you need to get back to the top which needs the energy again. Its all very theoretical, but extremely interesting. I have a 75 cm Indiana Mast but am changing to a 85cm Carbon Indiana and a 1200 har. Only because I can get a 85 cm for a very good price …Unfortunately too many variable there to compare directly. But I will keep watching your channel. Maybe see you in Zürich some day. Greetings from Bremen in Germany.
I love to long analytical videos. Maybe one about mast shims, fuse shims, front wing shims, rear wing shims. I have noticed that a negative fuse shim gives me more forward thrust during pump and reduces drag during climbing.
Thank you. I was also thinking about doing a video about shims. But hadn't had time so far, but have it on my list! Thanks for the input!
@@philipp4u2_thefoiler99after a lot of testing, i now use a 2 degree positive mast shim for increased angle of attack and no rear wing shim, i plan to test a negative mast shim next. Love your mathematical approach to pump foiling!
Danke Philipp. Guet erklärt und animiert 😃

Danke Vil mol Philipp für die gueti Erchlärig. 😃

Thanks for this analysis,!
You are welcome! Happy to hear that you like it!
Great Video and explanations ! I have experienced an additional effect of Mast Lenght. If the board is at the same height above the water with 2 different masts (which is what naturally happens when you change mast height), then the longer mast is deeper in the water. As the nearer the foil to the surface, the more efficient it is, the deeper it is the less efficient it is resulting in a reduced pumping time.
Hi, happy to hear that you like my video. Interesting topic and I already tried to find some physical explanation for that because I experience the same. I guess the main reason is that when you have "more of the mast" in the water, you will also have more drag from the mast which I guess we perceive that it is less efficient. May there are also some effects that the density of the water is increasing with more depths, but I doubt if we can really feel that due to these few centimeters. But will try to dig deeper into that 🙂
@@philipp4u2_thefoiler99 I think this has something to do with the amount of water above the foil. The deeper it is, the more water and therefore weight there is above the foil when you try to have it go up.
@@foilenvie Thanks, interesting thought. Have not considered that before as the flow around the foil is generating the lift, however have to look into that - thanks!
Thanks for the interesting explanation, very useful! I think that the increase in water density at depth is negligible due to the (nearly) incompressible nature of a fluid. What we experience is the added pressure due to the weight of the surrounding water, which increases linearly to the increase in depth. As a consequence, we will not increase lift by having the foil deep in the water, only more drag on the mast and possibly some effect by the increased pressure on the pumping cycle (not sure about this last part). And to add, in salt water, the density is higher so we experience more lift at the same depth as compared to fresh water... @@philipp4u2_thefoiler99
And of course, you have the different mechanical properties of masts of different length (torsional and lateral stiffness). All things being equal, shorter masts will be stiffer in both aspects, thus increasing control over the system (a very light-footed analysis, I know). This also plays a huge part in controlling the system. But I guess that is a topic for another video:)
Many thanks for your time and your explanations. This is the most scientific explanation I have found

Thanks! It's great to see your never give up message because i am doubting that I will ever succeed! Im ok with landing on the board but can't seem to get the pumping going stong enough.
Hi Martin, when I first saw someone pumpfoiling, I thought: That mus be super easy, just land and move up and down... but reality told me a different story. Talking to all my friends, it took most of them between 300 and 450 attempts to be do a solid pumping-round ... so do not give up, we all swallowed a lot of water. What equipment do you use? Have you checked my other video about the body position? If you like, drop me a message on insta: philipp4u2
I can see exactly what you mean. Thanks, it's going to help.

Absolutely excellent tutorial. Thanks. How many tries appropriately to get to this level? And once at this level, what is your success rate of each attempt? 3 out of 4 or what? 🏄♀️🤩
Great that you like the video! Well, most riders will have to invest some starts... we made once a survey and asked the community how many starts it takes them --> pumpfoilers.ch/en/insights-into-the-pumpfoiling-community/ Once you are more experienced and you have a good spot, you should be able to achieve a success rate of 90% plus 🙂
How do you prevent from falling forward? When I put my weight forward, the board directly dives into the water
Hi, the exact position depends on the setup you use. Whenever I use a new setup, I first check where the Frontwing is. For the first ‚jump‘ I then try to keep the center of my body right above the wing. However, other reasons that the board dives directly into the water mybe not enough initial push (not enough speed) of the board or also the alignment of the board.
Brilliant
Thank you!
Great explanation! Can you explain how to pump efficiently?
I would assume that you understand with "efficient pumpfoing" that you want to do loger runs and for that minimiziing the energy consumption, right? Well, I would need to do some more research and testing to provide an answers with „a solid foundation“. May others have already a precise answer to this? I would say that we basically have to keep the drag low. As the drag is not linear in comparison to the angle of attack (definition angle of attack: pumpfoilers.ch/en/physics-of-a-hydrofoil/ ) , we have to make sure that the angle of attack is never too big during the pumpoing circle. Reason for that is, that with a higher angle of attack the drag increases. In addition to that, I would recommend to do „more flat pumps“ and not "too steep" ones. In addition to that, I also recommend to use the full body to induce the required push instead only pumping with the legs.
Great explanation! Thanks for taking the effort! As a general rule: if your board‘s nose is pointing up most of the time you‘re losing speed.
Thank you, you’re welcome!
Very interesting explanation. A bit complicated for me to follow in English, but otherwise very good.
Nice evening drone shot of one of the best lakes there is.

Hi Phil. i've been learning to dockstart. Having some decent progress but still very inconsistent off the dock. A lot of videos talk about putting hands on top of the board and landing your feet on the board with hands still touching or just off. Your technique is way different. I have tried both and seem to have more success with your technique. How is your consistency in landing on the board and being able to pump out?
Hello Maik, sorry for having overlooked your comment. Well, my success rate is close to 100%, but I am also pumping a lot. There are a lot of people recommending taking two or threecsteps and jumping then on board. Their argument is having with that more speed. My opinion- but also open for others - is that that way of starting requires more coordination. I also do not believe 100% in the argument, that you can reach with that higher speeds to take off. Also with jumping out of the stand (how I do it) you can give a lot of speed with the “pushing hand”.
@@philipp4u2_thefoiler99 Hey no problem Phillip. Lots of practice since I posted question. I'm in a cold climate so docks are all gone for the season.
