      Yes i know. I watched a lot of your videos, but in low speed maneuvers you need to mainly use the clutch and a little bit of gas. What do you do if you dont have clutch. Like on those Hondas dct?

    • @MotoJitsu

      Vukasin Milutinovic one less thing to worry about...just throttle and rear brake. I have a video of me riding an electric bike and I also ridden new Gold Wings with no clutch.

      I just recently bought a motorcycle and have never actually road one, it's a Yamaha V Star 1100 . I'm really nervous about not only switching gears but slowing down and switching gears. I've heard different things about slowing down and how long you can hold the clutch.

  • @DanteYewToob
    @DanteYewToob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    Just a note for some newer riders, something I learned the hard way.
    Always lightly tap or hold the rear brake while engine braking. Just enough to engage the brake light. Car drivers think like cars, and if they don't see a brake light, they won't slow down. It might be too late before they realize you dropped significant speed. So a tappy tap and then hold the brake pedal down lightly while engine braking could save your life!
    In your drive or garage, you can test out and tap the pedal and see how much pressure it takes to engage the light (on most bikes, it's very little. Typically the light comes on long before any actual braking force is applied.) and on a back street, just feel how lightly you can press to not really brake.
    That is your sweet spot. Get used to it. It's your new signal/middle finger.
    When someone is riding your ass, give em a few tappy taps. Enough to flash your brake light at them and let them know they're too damn close.
    I hope this helps.
    I had a fee close calls where I was focused on riding and I was just engine braking and realized people kept getting uncomfortably close to me and started cursing drivers "Everyone is out to kill me! Assholes!" I said... until I realized it was *my fault* and I was just slowing down without any warning or notice.
    Ride safe and remember that everyone isn't out to kill you. Most drivers are just fine and sometimes it's you. Just watch out for the few that are the exception... the texters and smokers and fast food eaters. The people who care not, and pay no mind. The deadly ones.

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't have to 'always' do that...all depends if there's someone behind you, how close, the environment, etc. Tailgaters is something different, I have a video about that if that's what you were talking about.

    • @DanteYewToob
      @DanteYewToob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@MotoJitsu Yes, it's not always strictly necessary, I just prefer to build the muscle memory. What I meant was; if you're going to use engine braking as your primary way of slowing to a corner or stop light, you should signal the change in speed. Small speed adjustments or whatever don't really warrant it, but if your slowing down rapidly having your brake light on couldn't hurt.
      A lot of drivers lately are really distracted or pay more attention to the car/bike in front of them, than they do the environment. They're more likely to notice the person ahead braking, before they realize the light is red or a stop is approaching.
      I just assume it's good practice to get used to, since I typically use engine braking for a lot of my deceleration when I ride. Sometimes I rarely touch the brakes when I'm just cruising around for fun. I pretty much use them as backup and keep them handy for emergencies. (Honestly, I don't know if that's a good or bad thing... but it's just something I've gotten used to. I use light braking for cornering and maneuvering, but engine braking for my major deceleration.)
      I'm still learning, so hopefully this will all be second nature to me one day.

    I want to thank so much Moto! If I wouldn’t have seen this today, before I went riding. I would be dead! I was practicing the things you spoke about in this video, and I live in the Midwest. So, tractors are out preparing the fields. Came around a sharp right-hand blind corner, with a field entrance mid corner, no outs. Three cars in the oncoming lane. I got stopped safely and felt prepared, confident, and was totally in touch with my bike. I appreciate you and your channel brother, you saved my life and I am grateful, thank you!!!

    Nice Greg. Pressure Braking... I like it. At ChampSchool, we categorize any braking after the turn is initiated as trail braking but this clarifies holding brake pressure (not trailing-off) in the corner really well. Good job. My invented term is "Master-Braker" (Pun intended) because learning how to master the brakes may be the most important skill for any motorcycle rider. The ability to slow down and/or stop anywhere/ anytime could be the skill to save more lives than just about any other.
    We advocate to avoid "Regular Braking" in any corner that requires you to slow down because the moment you let go of the brakes, you reduce frontward bias (the springs in the front cause the bike to kinda pop-up) which takes away the geometry the bike needs to turn better but also takes weight off the front which reduces contact patch. In essence, you are taking rubber off the road and then asking the bike to lean over when you release the brakes before you turn. That is the cause of the majority of low sides and front-end tucks.
    Good stuff man.
    PS, We had a few Motojitsu members out to class this week in SoCal and they did great so thank you!

    Great video! Thanks for sharing. It's not really a braking technique but one of the "other" contributing factors of being able to slow down (or not) is road camber. There are a few curves that I know I can go into them a bit faster because the road banks and will naturally slow me down. And a few that are the opposite that are super tricky especially in the wet!

    When coming up to a stop I usually almost exclusively use engine braking and downshifting through all the gears for most of the stopping power, with the brakes providing the final stopping power.
    However, I keep slight pressure on the brakes to ensure the light is on for a car behind me to be aware that I am braking.
    When at the stop I keep my left foot on the ground and right foot on the rear brake initially if no cars are behind me.
    When I see a car coming up behind me I tap the rear brake a few times to flash the light.
    Once the car is safely stopped behind me, I’ll put both feet on the ground.
    But always keep the bike in gear and hand on the throttle, never got into the habit of putting
    the bike in neutral at stop.

      I agree.
      I definitely use my front brakes a lot, and more than the rear.
      Especially when riding “spirited.”
      Though gear selection is important when riding hard in twisty stuff.
      Was mainly just referring to when riding up to a stop sign/light.
      Like to downshift through the gears up to the stop and allow the engine to slow me down, but have the front brake covered and then use it when needed or at the end to come to a complete stop.
      Bonus is the sweet sound of the rev match through each gear, and some pops and crackles.

    ho, after a lot of practice i learned the "blipping the throttle" or "rev matching" thing, started learning it from "twist of the wrist 2" video, and after many videos trying to understand it and slowly trying it bit by bit (cause it was a pain to hear the engine when i was getting it wrong), brakes + clutch + bleeping throttle +shifting, all together on a milliseconds timing difference on every down-up shift (sometimes skipping clutch part on slow speed shifts), after a year i was doing it everywhere on every stop or slow down before corner, it was the third most awesome feeling on the bike (leaning on a corner came first and feeling of freedom on solitary highway second :p) , i still can brake using all of the techniques you mention above, but none comes close to the feeling of braking while rev matching, and after 3 years of mainly using that technique on the same bike now it just comes automatic to me no matter the speed, i kinda know how much throttle on which gear-speed i have to twist, is not numbers, is a feeling of it, guess i'm not a master of all arts like you encourage us to be :p but i feel like theres something missing on my ride if i start just engine breaking releasing the clutch or just using the brakes, so i might be wrong but, after you learn how to slow the bike properly, i would encourage to learn how to use this technique, is not a must or a need, but it will make your ride way more fun and awesome ;)

    I'm a new rider and have been wanting to learn how to break safely. If say I meet the traffic, is it enough to press the clutch and downshift? Then later press the rear brake to stop totally? And maybe use the hand brake only when I need to.

    Assuming street riding. Wouldn’t trail braking as initially explained mean you haven’t slowed enough for the corner? If your holding the brake in the corner whilst leaning until you're happy... you’ve miss judged the corner and your speed. I find a big difference between North American systems and UK systems of control. Example, we tend to balance the bike in a corner with just off neutral throttle. Engine braking here would be downshifting using engine compression. Simply rolling off would be classed as acceleration sence. Interesting.

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No.

    • @RedFoxFoxyFomo
      @RedFoxFoxyFomo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MotoJitsu what's normally advocated over here is to position, slow to an appropiate speed before the corner. Select gear for speed, turn and accelerate. It would be suggested under the norm over here that if you're needing to brake (as in apply brakes) mid corner, you got the speed wrong in the braking phase pre corner.
      Always good to see alternative systems and understand the merits of each don't you think.

    • @MotoJitsu

      There is no 1 way for every corner...trail braking can be used at any corner, any pace. All depends on many variables.
