  • Intensive farming has helped to create a meat industry worth over $300 billion a year, but an appetite for beef has put the planet under incredible strain. Counter Space heads to Spain to explore the future of meat stopping at restaurants serving up steaks aged 20 years to just 40 minutes.

      Terry Spam is a delicacy in Hawi'i (and maybe some other pacific islands? Hawai'i for sure (i've lived there with the navy for years, and had some g o o d plate lunches)
      Visuals aren't everything with food, you have smell, taste, texture, temperature etc.
      You can make the BEST brownie, but shape it in the shape of a dog turd and few will even think to try it over "cheap box brownies" in rectangles next to it.
      Just my 2 cents i guess.

      Lab meat will come 100% close to a steak that was grown in animals once we start to figure out how to grow complete functional muscles that are electrically stimulated while growing to simulate being in an animal...
      It may take 20 years or more but it probably isn't too far away since now there is a market for it and money is invested into the research.
      Those discoveries would also benefit humans since we could probably grow your own organs out of your own cells, so that they are 100% compatible since the body doesn't reject them.

    I wish cows and other livestocks were raised and slaughtered more humanely like it appears at José Gordón’s farm. I think industrial farms should be illegal around the world, no matter what country. I like the fact most of his cows live a relatively good life before being slaughtered for our consumption. I like the fact his cows live for a good 20 years before being slaughtered for food, compared to 1-2 years at industrial farms. I’m not sure at what age cows would live to if they weren’t slaughtered, but 20 years is much better than only 1-2 years of life.
    Don’t get me wrong, I love me a nice medium rare steak, but I would feel a lot better if I knew my steak came from a cow who lived a good life, was treated with respect, wasn’t cramped up in a small space, roamed around open land, was transported humanely and not days without food or water, and was slaughtered humanely without any fear, suffering, or pain. I would even be willing to pay more for said steak and meat. I hope plant-based meats becomes more mainstream, becomes a real alternative to _real_ meat, and _real_ meat becomes more of a big treat that’s eaten a couple of times a year rather than it being an everyday good.

      The thing is denying your body meat has harmful effects on healthy development and sustaining active lifestyles. Not saying it’s impossible but it is harmful as it makes it harder for the body to obtain and process nutrients and most importantly protein. Our bodies have evolved to have an easier time extracting nutrition from meat than other sources and you actually need to consume a higher amount of vegetable protein than meat protein to get the same nutrition as our bodies have an easier time breaking down meat. Not to mention factory farming for meat derivatives such as soy is oftentimes more harmful to the local environment than meat processing is.

      What would happen if those are the only two choices are that only the rich have access to "real" meat, and everyone else gets fake plant protein. Unfortunately there is simply not enough land or meat production capacity when you treat the animals well. Let's do some math: the humane farm raises cattle for 20 years instead of 1, there is 20x less meat production just from that. Then the density of animals on that farm compared to factory farms is maybe 100x less. Your real beef patty would cost more than a monthly rent of $2000 (1x20x100) instead of $1. That's not even factoring in transportation costs, when you transport fewer items, the per item transport cost increases. Too many people think about feel-good emotions, instead of sitting down and looking at reality.

    • @Fpvpilot928
      @Fpvpilot928 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you realize how expensive that meat is. Would you pay $200-$300 for a steak? How about a $150 hamburger. I'm not saying that the industry doesn't need to change - it does. I'm just making sure we all understand that Gordon's cattle isn't the future of sustainable farming either. As much as I dislike it, those rubber gum steaks are the future of "meat". lol.

      Also that type of process probably isn't anywhere near what would be used industrally. Making "Meat Simulants" via using that slurry, and making "muscle fibers" is what some companys do i think? I think they use a sort of "constant extrusion" type thing (don't quote me on it though!).

    • @windydelta7105

      I was really excited about insect protein until recently. Apparently it is very very difficult to digest for most humans, and is abit similar to lactose tolerance in that you either have the enzymes to digest it or do not. People from regions that have sustained themselves on it are much more likely to have the enzymes, but that prevents it from being a reliable international protein source.
