      I agree. My favorite post-Beatles songs (Well, one of them at least) Then you have John Lennon's prolific library of songs. Double Fantasy was his last great work. All too soon, and so unnecessary. Bless these men for giving us the gift of music.

      Rock critics are awful. I see right through them. A journalist usually has no ear for music, so they focus on lyrics, since they are good with language. If the lyrics don't give them anything to write about, they usually say it's a bad song. Also, the elite level of rock critics, especially in the 70s/80s, expected every band or artist to not just submit to an interview, but to _court_ them, to _cultivate a relationship_ with them, give them backstage passes and advance copies of the records, all sorts of privileges. To be buddies with them, essentially. John Lennon usually entertained journalists, with his strong ideas and clever wordplay, so they adored him. I think Paul knew he didn't need them. I'm not sure how he handled the press. His interviews weren't exactly the most entertaining tings in the world. It makes sense that they would bash him and elevate John. I actually like John better myself, but I also believe Paul's been badly treated by the critics. And whoever said Paul gets shit merely for being alive, when John is dead -- I'm certain that's true.

    • @BenCulture
      @BenCulture 9 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      Ben Culture P.S. If a critic is also a musician, or ideally, a musicologist, they will have a _vastly_ different outlook, and a whole different set of favorites. Anybody who truly knows music knows, the Sex Pistols weren't nearly as interesting as Pink Floyd, for example, and that the Beatles were far better than the Stones. I think the only _real_ competition the Beatles had were the Brian-Wilson-Beach-Boys, and The Who! I mean in terms of musical quality, not sales or chart positions.

    This is as good as anything The Beatles ever put out. In my opinion, this is Paul's greatest song, such an eclectic mix of different moods, both sad and tragic (the moment you hear rain and thunder 0:27 used to send chills down my spine as a kid) then suddenly upbeat in tempo with trumpet lead and chorus "Hands across the Water." Certain songs will always transport me back to my childhood. Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me" is one, this is another.

    McCartney was so completely dialed in creatively with this stuff it is absolutely classic material. I get shivers listening to it. Lyrically,.. musically.. all i can say is OMG. His songs are like little stories. Little movies. You see the images musically. Who can do that?? There's a reason he is who he is.
