I'd be honored if some Beatles fans would take a quick listen to my lo-fi acoustic piano & vocal YT performances of BLACKBIRD and PENNY LANE in tribute to 2 of the many genius compositions written by Sir Paul. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and stay safe.
@@slimva6547 It is live actually. Although it is slightly edited here. This song was performed twice on the rooftop and this video is mostly the better first version. Lennon messed up the vocals on the third verse and that line has been replaced with a bit of the second version here. The full unedited first version has now been released on the new box set.
This video kills me. They all knew it was over by then. Yet. The looks they gave each other. The happiness. The joy of making music one last time even though it was the end. It's one of the most profound pure emotional segments in history that, I don't know how to word it. It kills me. Love it!!!
+Nicole Barret It was their last performance. They hadn't been on tour since 1966. They were a studio band by then and didn't play concerts. It's obvious that this made them feel good again because it was just them up there playing music together like it used to be. No egos fighting for their creative input. But as far as the breakup later that year every member has said that they pretty much knew it was over. There were constant fights between John and Paul. John knew for sure. He's the one that broke and announced he was quitting. Just one of those things.
+Nicole Barrett I think they all stayed friends. It was really more like sibling rivalry. It was mainly John and Paul. George and Ringo kind of just said that they were just sick of John and Paul fighting. Also, they were pretty lost when Brian Epstein died of a drug overdose. John was always the leader of the band, but ever since Sgt. Pepper, Paul started taking the reins quite a bit more. You know, just tensions between strong willed creative geniuses. Of course, don't forget Yoko. They were like 4 brothers and then all of a sudden John starts bringing this weird woman to their writing and performing sessions who wasn't shy about giving her opinions about their actual creative process. I can't even imagine how awful that must have been for the other three, especially Paul. What a complete nightmare. So, yeah. Quite sad. So for all of that, it's why people watch this little roof top concert with such reverence. By the way, you're British, aren't you?
+Bobby Stinklehoffer That's great stuff, Bobby. You know what I love? That after almost 50 years, everyone is still so intrigued by it all. They truly were out of this world. :)
Cool to see in the documentary how Paul was actually the one who suggested the iconic groove on the ride symbol. The Beatles were just a great team that musically elevated each other.
Imagine walking down the road on the way to do whatever you’re doing and witness the Beatles playing on the roof of their studio, unbeknownst to many, for the last time ever. No one would believe why you were late.
@@Blackshuck51 The bullets would go back at you because your brain isnt even capable of write a single sentence, even worse, you wouldnt even know how to aim
To this day I can't comprehend how this rooftop concert was recorded just 5 short years after their early hits like "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". The pace of their evolution was insane.
Incredible. And not just them, the whole world shifted so radically and so quickly. It’s a cliche to say the sixties were a revolution but it’s absolutely true.
Wow, I thought I was the only one to have noticed that. Seriously have ya watched the entire 3+hr doco. It explains alot that I've wondered about since my childhood in the 70"s?
The greatest band in history. My sister turned me on to these incredible musicians back in 64 when I was 6 years old. Been a Beatles fan ever since. My son’s generation seems to listen to them as well. No group has ever touched so many generations as the Beatles !!
I was six in 1964 when Beatlemania hit the U.S.as well! Our family lived less than 20 miles from JFK airport when they first landed. Thank God for older siblings!
I was born in '66 and heard Beatles music as a child in the early '70's and later of course. I loved it! My parents hated it, said they were beatnik hippies, leftists, acid rock. Of course that is NOT true! They made love songs mostly and they were wonderful songs, beautiful. It seems to me (but may not be true, I don't know), that the Beatles defined the pop music sound of the '60's. I honestly can't think of anyone else with such a sound. And it's a really, really great sound by the way, I've always loved it!
2:14 That look that Paul and John share just warms my heart every time. Despite all the troubles, all the struggle, in that moment, the Beatles were okay.
@@L_Martin I think they were just moving apart in their careers and lives... it even happens to the best of bands. After seeing the raw footage for Peter Jackson's documentary, Paul and Ringo saw there was far less animosity in their breakup than they had realized. No one was really at fault. It just was a natural progression.
@@dan_hitchman007 I think if the group had agreed to take some time off, disband for a couple of years and then regroup, things would have gone down differently. But the influence of Allen Klein on John, for e.g., plus heroin addiction - culminating in John's rash "I want a divorce" declaration wound up in Paul essentially calling his bluff and agreeing to end the band, when it seems fairly clear now John was very up and down during that time and even seemed to feel remorse just days after asking for the divorce. The podcast "Another Kind of Mind" is a fantastic listen if anyone's interested in looking at the breakup from a different angle to how the narrative is usually portrayed.
The universe shifted when these guys got together - the best band of all time, their chemistry and charisma was just perfect. We are very blessed to have had them and their music 😊
Y John que lleva un abanico....porque tambien parece que lleva una guitarra y ademas la toca. Una guitarra ritmica que es tan importante como las de los otros 2. Roberto149 sabes mucho ingles pero poco de musica.
Watching Lennon and McCartney smiling at each other during this song, when they were together just doing music with no outside BS going on, is magical. They knew, they just knew ...
Google global truth project and read "the Present" to see the truth about life/death. Nothing is more important than checking it is true, especially pgs 1-4
It must be really strange to be someone like Paul McCartney, and to look back at your life and see the enormous influence you have had on the world when you started out as a twenty something who just wanted to be a successful musician and do what you loved for a living.
So this was their final performance live and even though they were arguing and tensions were running high, as soon as they began playing music, John and Paul instinctively turn towards each other and often smile. Music was their bond but business tore them apart.
In an interview: McCartney added that the Beatles split in 1970 was mainly caused by an argument over the role of US businessman Allen Klein in the band’s affairs I think Yoko had a lot to do with it.
@@Jibbie49 yes that was my understanding also, that it was Klein who was the real 'villain' of the piece. I also understand that J, R and G admitted later on that they should never have trusted Klein - that's why Paul sued them, to get away from Klein, *not* his band mates.
It must have been very hard for lifelong best friends, who'd been through so much together and whose friendship and bond went well beyond mere music, to be driven apart by petty business reasons.
For some reason I always come back to this video when I feel stressed, frustrated, trying to make something work…but just want a release for a few minutes. What a moment this was.
I watched part 1 yesterday. Agree 100%. Seeing the songs take shape out of rifts was amazing. Paul and George strumming to Get Back with no lyrics was fun.
Seriously, I don't care who you like or who your favorite band is what the Beatles accomplished is really second to none. When I was younger, I was fascinated by their later stuff. I'd sit for hours listening to the White Album, Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road. The creativity, diversity, and songwriting/performing talent seemed to be endless. Epic.
@ ben cato (who observed, "Most underrated guy on the rooftop that day....Billy Preston on the keyboard....amazing"): Oh shit, I didn't even notice him until, once you mentioned it, the first few frames. Sad he was shunted out of view.
Hate to say it, because it's my favorite Beatle song of all time, and that's tough to say, but Billy Preston's keyboards are what really make that song.
An unreal collection of talent. John's vocals, Paul's bassline, George's riffs, perfectly complimentary drumming from Ringo and Billy Preston with an awesome piano outro. Just ridiculous.
I'm 70, looking at the terrible mess the world is in currently, and watching this and letting it take me back to to a time never to be repeated, one could just sit down and cry. We truly did not appreciate just how fortunate we were then, but I did get my share and I live the memories and I'm grateful.
I have never understood this song. To me, it seems they were trying too hard to make this into a good song but didn't quite get it. But, what the hell do I know about music? Not much, really, and can't even play one note.
Just look at them and then the onlookers around them. They were ahead of their time and the greatest musical phenomena in history. I was 11 years old when they arrived on the scene and Paul MacCartney was my first love and crush, he still is. I often wonder what goes through Paul's head knowing he is one of the greatest icons to have lived and that he will be immortal when he passes on leaving such a legacy. I feel proud and privileged to have lived during his life. I know I will never meet you Paul but 'THANK YOU. Jane xx
Something about those four guys that pretty much made everyone fall in love with their music. They always had such a beautiful, uplifting sound and wonderful love songs.
Billy Preston adds so much to this song! I really wish they would have showed him playing. It was such a joy to watch him play in the documentary whenever they showed him.
I think I've spent thousands of dollars on Beatles related things, in my lifetime. Bought every album in practically every format. Books.. all that stuff. Long live Beatles
The love that governed their lives, especially John's and George's, does live forever... it cannot die; it is impossible :-) I adore them. People think that love has to look like Mother Teresa, or God forbid some religious self-promoting person, but that's not true. Love is expressed in human, fragile vessels to perfection
I can’t believe I am just now seeing this for the first time in my life. On the work bus with the biggest smile on my face and bopping my head not caring if my coworkers see me or judge me. Just jamming out and pure happiness and love but also sadness and nostalgia too
@ Verlo por primera vez y ver la felicidad y la tristeza en sus rostros porque era su última presentación juntos fue realmente hermoso. Ya lo he escuchado como 5 veces más desde entonces jajaja

Without question, one of the finest songs in the simplest format executed with the highest skill, flair and pure pop joy. For their time, and forever after, The Beatles are without peer. The legacy is global and timeless. Aren't we lucky to have them.
This song as aged well. I believe it was considered a knock off. Don't remember ever hearing it on the radio at the time, it didn't make the cut for Let It Be LP & its only release was the B-side to a 45 & later the Hey Jude LP which was a collection of "non album singles & B-sides". Although I wouldn't put Get Back & Let It Be in the same category as Stairway to Heaven & Freeboard, heard them so much I don't care if I ever hear them again, I"ve heard 'em enough & am satisfied with occasionally hearing them on the radio. This song however I include on playlist & love it when it come up.

One peculiar day in the heart of New York City, John Lennon found himself strolling through Central Park when he noticed a strikingly familiar face. To his amazement, he encountered someone who not only looked exactly like him but also shared the same name - John Lennon. Intrigued and amused, the two Johns exchanged puzzled glances before breaking into laughter at the uncanny resemblance. They decided to grab a coffee and chat, discovering they had eerily similar tastes in music, art, and even fashion. The chance meeting sparked an unexpected friendship between the original John Lennon and his doppelganger. As they explored the city together, the two Johns navigated the streets with amused onlookers, who couldn't believe their eyes. The duo even played a prank on some fans, pretending that they were a reunited Lennon in disguise. The spontaneous encounter turned into a surreal adventure, blending reality and a touch of the absurd, leaving both Johns with a tale to tell and a friendship that transcended the boundaries of ordinary coincidences.
Sadly it doesn't, love will end up in her cheating on you, and your love. There is a reason why this song is called don't let me down as this is sadly the most likely outcome
@@theundertaker5963 I get where you're coming from, but I meant the love I have for the Beatles. They were so in "touch" with each other - like they just knew what to do without much practice. Amazing band. My dad was a DJ in 1964, he brought home "Meet the Beatles" and forced the whole family to sit and listen to it. My mother hated it. My dad said "You are wrong - this band will be around forever". how much I would give to be able to witness this, i don't even know. truly one of the most iconic moments in all of music history, the greatest band of all time coming together to give one last performance before the end.
The Beatles were so comfortable playing together by this time that what is essentially a jam on a rooftop is as professional as a studio recording. Their harmonies are effortless and dead on, and the groove is flawless. Love it.
Its perfection in life, music, and wonder. The Beatles are....The Beatles and I get on my knees to thank the universe for these four wonders! Life is the gift in the fab four.
I've heard this song a million times, but it's only now I'm realizing how lyrical, consistent, and elegant Ringo's drumming is here. Those fills, the crash hits and snare work are so integrated and complement the layered sound of this song so well - he's really playing into the song and not under or over it. Simply amazing!
Ringo is the perfect drummer. He has a steady, reliable backbeat and doesn't show off. His drumming works perfectly for every song he plays, bringing exactly what is necessary and nothing more. He can play any beat at any tempo, and usually brings his own unique flair to it, like Ticket To Ride. He improved that song so much.
I don't think people realize how much Billy Preston adds to this song. Takes a basic guitar rock ballad and transforms it into something as good as any jazz record I've ever listened to.
when he arrives and starts playing in the documentary Lennon says something like--you've saved us, we need you bad, something so fresh-and he's invited on the spot to join. - and he does add so much to the sound
Must have been a bit different for them. Used to looking out at 1000's of screaming teenagers. Now here they are looking out at tops of buildings and chimney tops. You ever noticed how none of them went bald. The Beatles were not a band, they were heaven sent.
Billy Preston really added to the sound. As soon as he turned up in the studio in the lead up to this gig things started to come together. Not taking anything away from the other 4, but he was "the icing on the cake".
Jan. 30, 1969 at 12:30p, lunch time--and many people came out after word spread--on the rooftop of Apple's HQ in London, 42-min. The most famous, free, unannounced concert in pop music history! According to Billy Preston, it was John Lennon who suggested it. The brains of the singing group to the very end! John's final words wrapping up the concert, in another of his cheekiest lines, ""I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we've passed the audition." Love him forever!
Same here, I’m 75. But who doesn’t? John, Paul, George and Ringo are out of this world. Happy to be alive at the same time and follow their music for all these decades. The most incredible music act of all times. Nothin gets even closer. Cheers 🥂
As Rick Beato points out there were NO monitors, NO earpieces, nothing. Just singing into microphones, outdoors in London, in January, an entire concert. That's not for the faint of heart yet at their level of mastery it was effortless.
Yeah, they were a great band. I thought it was amusing also that Paul was asked if they ever used click tracks, and he was like "no, they didn't even have those in our day. You just had to know how to play" lol
This was one of my uncles favourites, he passed away early hours this Sunday morning. Played the Beatles to him at his bed side, just like we did when he was here, I'm Having a night up late singing to the Beatles like we did very often !!! Sorry neighbours xxxxxxx
Found this song from an older gentlemen named John Stewart playing an absolutely beautiful cover with his acoustic guitar. In some small peaceful little bar near midnight, i felt an overwhelming sense of calm I have never felt before. Thank you John.
There would be if people were willing to give other bands a fucking chance. The only reason there isn't another Beatles is because nobody believes there will be.
what xdddd there were absolutely NO differences that would break the band... they were the best friends for life, and the reason for this being their last concert was a money issue. "The Beatles' contract with Allen Klein meant that all earnings made from each member's solo works were to go into the Apple "pot". In August 1970, McCartney began steps to dissolve the Beatles' partnership, arguing his financial and artistic freedom was infringed." first thing that comes up form google
they looked the best mid sixties ish about the Rubber Soul era that was style mate , they look ok here , but the floppy flare thing at the end of the decade nowhere near as cool as the mid sixties and Mod look .
I thought the same thing when I first saw this video. I thought oh they are balling in their for coats and loving the life jamming out together. Read the back story... None of them wanted to play this. The police were there waiting to shut them down for a noise complaints and they all borrowed the jackets from their gf/wives. But don't they look happy jamming out together ? What could have been!! F!*$& u Mark Chapman. On my father's birthday off 1980 12-8. My favorite Beatles song I recently just found.
@@krbstud55 People say they were at each others throats at this point in their history, but I agree with you, just look at the charge they are getting out of playing a live song for an audience for probably the first time in a few years. It's incredible how this band goes through the times in an untouchable way and still awakens passions. I believe that no one in Popular Music has achieved or will achieve such a feat!
The Roof Top Sessions are a piece of history that will never be forgotten. It's also a sad time as it was the very last live performance of the four together. When I hear someone say they're not really a Beatles fan, I just cannot get my head around that. How can someone love Rock but not the Beatles who were on the forefront? These songs will forever be the best in my opinion. I wish we could take music back to these days.
It’s the LIB footage...however, this is the studio recording placed over the Rooftop gig audio. John either flubs the “done me verse” or censors the words with the Gobbly Goo line which is played during the film

For anyone who doesn't know this session took place on the roof of the Beatles Saville Row offices and brought the traffic to a stop. It was on the TV news that night. I remember it even now... Their last gig. And John said at the end (just before they were asked to end by the cops) "Thanks very much and we hope we passed the audition". I still miss that man. The day he was shot I felt as though someone had killed my teenage years.

There was something about the timbre of John's voice that could give me the shivers. This was one of those times. So grateful we have these recordings and videos.
I saw George Martin say the same thing in an interview several years ago as he recounted going back after many years and hearing the master recording of JL’s opening verse of Day in the Life. He said it raised the hair on the back of his neck and sent a chill down his spine. A timeless masterpiece that one.
I was 13 when I sae this film Let It Be. Very powerful seeing them being natural and serious together. Before that we had only seen cartoon films and comedy films. I am so priveleged to have witnessed their career from the beginning. They have led extraordinary lives. Bless them all.
Something about this being the last Beatles performance hits me deep. It’s as if the song is about the Beatles themselves in a don’t forget about us way. Seeing the Beatles we’ve lost and the ones we still have feels like “don’t be sad it’s gone be happy it happened.” Seeing John sing and to a great degree the rest feel like a wish for us to always remember them.
It's sad to think that this is the last time we see them perform together in public. That's what makes this HISTORIC. RIP John and George. Thank you Beatles.
An amazing performance, God bless Paul and Ringo to stay with us as long as God will allow. RIP John and George you are missed greatly by Beatles fans the world over.

Nice one mate, 👍, I'm living 10 minutes from Strawberry fields & John's old house on Menlove Avenue, every time I go past these places, when it's very quiet, you can feel eyes watching you, I look up at John's old bedroom window & sometimes it can be quite emotional, I'm 67 now, but my sister used to go & watch the lads in the Cavern in the early 60s, I grew up listening to their records she played on a small record player, she married a Yank & moved to Ann Arbour in Michigan in 71, but she has many memories of them early days, they did us Scousers proud didn't they.? +Nicole Barret It was their last performance. They hadn't been on tour since 1966. They were a studio band by then and didn't play concerts. It's obvious that this made them feel good again because it was just them up there playing music together like it used to be. No egos fighting for their creative input. But as far as the breakup later that year every member has said that they pretty much knew it was over. There were constant fights between John and Paul. John knew for sure. He's the one that broke and announced he was quitting. Just one of those things.
Marcus Irwin oh that's quite sad
Actually
I thought that they all got on good
Well anyway all good things must come to an end
Ringo always has the perfect groove for every song. He truly was a one of a kind drummer.

I get chills from John Lennon’s voice. He was special.

2:14 That look that Paul and John share just warms my heart every time. Despite all the troubles, all the struggle, in that moment, the Beatles were okay.

The spontaneous encounter turned into a surreal adventure, blending reality and a touch of the absurd, leaving both Johns with a tale to tell and a friendship that transcended the boundaries of ordinary coincidences.

they looked the best mid sixties ish about the Rubber Soul era that was style mate , they look ok here , but the floppy flare thing at the end of the decade nowhere near as cool as the mid sixties and Mod look .
Or do you mean william?
Makes me happy to see them here at one of the iconic moments of their lives.
@@heighwaysonthewing for me the pinnacle was the strawberry fields video. They were flexing in that one
It's incredible how this band goes through the times in an untouchable way and still awakens passions. I believe that no one in Popular Music has achieved or will achieve such a feat!
I could live to be a million and I’d never do anything as cool as the little move Paul does at 0:38
I noticed that.... Yeahhhhh it was smooth
its pure magic
I’ll do that rn real quick
Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you said this two days ago so I would see it when I came 'round not long after and watched the video. That is an AMAZING move!
So old fashion
The Roof Top Sessions are a piece of history that will never be forgotten. It's also a sad time as it was the very last live performance of the four together. When I hear someone say they're not really a Beatles fan, I just cannot get my head around that. How can someone love Rock but not the Beatles who were on the forefront? These songs will forever be the best in my opinion. I wish we could take music back to these days.

Yes and some nutter rang the coppers !
It’s music from heaven man . They are playing on cloud 9 and jamming how they can awesomeness
It’s the LIB footage...however, this is the studio recording placed over the Rooftop gig audio. John either flubs the “done me verse” or censors the words with the Gobbly Goo line which is played during the film
And in about five seconds I imagine I would be trying to scale the building.
😅😅😅 Yeahh... That's cool!!
Just the most rock n roll event ever. You see the tension melt and the smiles come back. GOD THIS IS AWESOME
There is nothing cooler than "The Beatles on the roof".
Paul looks exceptionally cool here.
I'd be honored if some Beatles fans would give a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of BLACKBIRD and PENNY LANE on my YT channel in tribute to 2 of the many genius compositions written by Sir Paul McCartney. The day he was shot I felt as though someone had killed my teenage years.
im sad

There was something about the timbre of John's voice that could give me the shivers. This was one of those times. So grateful we have these recordings and videos.
Nantague, John Lennon's voice is magnetic .. incredibly so.
I saw George Martin say the same thing in an interview several years ago as he recounted going back after many years and hearing the master recording of JL’s opening verse of Day in the Life. He said it raised the hair on the back of his neck and sent a chill down his spine. A timeless masterpiece that one.
Yes it's true your right madam sir the voice is golden age of the man who was a good singer 🇵🇭💕💕💕😙
💯 absolutely he is in his genius here, shining
Dig a Pony is even more riveting. Makes me cry
I’m pretty sure the song’s about Yoko and Paul

On this day Dec. 8 , 41 years after John Lennon's death, the beatles are just as relevent now as they were in the 60's. They are timeless. John was my favorite since 1964. Will always love his music.

Tara lad.
you know this is probably the only concert they could actually hear themselves playing, no screaming girls drowning out the sound of their own speakers.
