- Learn how to chip better with this easy Todd Kolb chipping lesson!
In this video, we will cover the proper chipping setup, the basic chipping motion, why hitting down on chip shots is bad advice, and a simple chipping drill to help you hit better chip shots!
Golden! Thanks for your ongoing tips from Houston TX.
I purchased "The Bad Lie" this past July, thanks to your visit with Mark Immelman on his "On The Mark" podcast. I love your philosophy and approach in teaching golf concepts that are so beneficial for the average recreational golfer. I went through a period of chipping yips this past year where shots were skull/shanked off to the right. Referring to a vid you did years ago where you used an alignment rod just off the green made me realize I was bringing the club too far to the inside and keeping the face closed. Heck, just watching your free motion on chips should help anyone just through osmosis! At 70 years young I am comfortable in my own golfing skin and embrace whatever natural athleticism I can impart to the golf swing after years of baseball and tennis have left me with golf as my sporting endeavor, which I thoroughly enjoy and participate in a couple of leagues around town. Thanks again!
Post of the week here! Thank you! We are lucky to share what we have learned with our fellow golfers, more to come. 👍
I use a slight forward shaft lean to decrease loft with my wedges. If the shaft is straight at my belt buckle, something I'm doing in my swing results in the ball traveling too short a distance. Jeff in SF Bay Area.
Another excellent instruction video. One thing I do that is not in your content, my stance is slightly open. Standing square to the line selected for the chip usually made the ball go right of that target line.
Thank you Todd! This is finally a chipping instruction that I have never heard or had. I have generally never had a problem getting to the area around the green with chances for par of better depending on my success in getting on the putting surface fairly close to the cup. Not knowing any better, I have always struck down on the ball with only occasional success. I struggled to achieve consistency and now I understand why. I not only had to figure out how far to bring the club back but also how hard to strike the ground. Shallow decent and very slightly open club face resonates with me. Now I can practice correctly!
Thanks Dave. Chipping is one of our favorite topics to teach. We have a couple chapter in our book THE BAD LIE on the topic. You can find the book on Amazon if you enjoy learning.
Depends on trajectory, i guess but for bump and run the handle is near my left pant pocket. For higher just forward of middle. Louis. Eastern Washington.
From Central Texas, but planes fly the same everywhere.
Large airplanes normally approach a runway at about a 3° angle.
I'm talking round numbers here. Typical approach speeds will be 150 to 175 mph, which gives a descent rate of 700 to 800 feet per minute.
For what it's worth, that 3° angle gives a slope of about 300 feet per mile. Under normal conditions, the pilot raises the nose during the last 50 feet or so, to cut the descent rate as much as possible but at least to below 200 feet per minute at touchdown.
TMI for some, but those are the numbers.
The roundness of the clubhead path does that for chip shots, aided by the "give" in the grass.
Great information here, did you like the analogy?
Can't help being geeky about aviation. Hope you and others find the technical info interesting.
Analogy isn't perfect, but still useful.
Todd, Happy New Year! Great tips from US Golf TV! That natural motion of which you speak is how I make my practice strokes until it feels "right", both in ground contact and "energy" (back swing). You state to use continuous motion. That's key. I'll chump the shot if I'm not committed to making the swing I practiced. The outcome of commiting is the continuous motion.
I find myself more often with an 8 iron for short, clear chips and generally mimic my putting stroke. For me, that takes some risk (and errors) out of my game. If the fringe is thick or I have a bunker to cross, then I'll grab my wedge to loft the ball and clear the obstruction.
Really, I think seeing this lesson reinforces what I'm doing. My number one thought, though, is that I have to commit to the shot and make the swing.
Another solid post here, thanks! Happy New Year.
Hi from UK near London. Thanks for the very helpful tips. great for a beginner like me!!!
Our pleasure, are you a subscriber?
You give the most tips per minute than anyone! Ball towards front foot for higher shot? (Just north of L.A.)
Thanks, we value your time and appreciate you following our content, more to come!
Either straight up or slightly forward
How much wrist hinge should one use? Rhode Island
It's difficult to chip off a lot of tight líes here in Florida with little grass
We did a video on that exact topic, see here th-cam.com/video/Uiws9kE7Ae4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JL3dlrQgCNz__-lY
Is your swing more like a putt with your wrist and arms more locked are you swing more like a golf shot with your wrist moving more.
HI. From Chicago. When do i determine if i open the face a little bit vs using another club with more or less lift?

I have no problems chipping from good lies. How about tight or bare lies. Many of the affordable golf courses do not maintain the course as well as they should.

@@USGOLFTVshow Kylie was out today practicing with your chipping
After awhile Kylie will refine it
The only problem is
I can’t keep Kylie off the golf course
But hey I’m not complaining 🤣⛳️
