Every single time I hear something new about the storytelling of Finding Nemo, I always love it so much more. I am sure that the guys at Pixar won't disappoint with Finding Dory.

Have you seen "The Lobster"? If so I have two questions. 1) What did you think of it? (I thought it was genius) 2) Could you perhaps make a video about Yorgos Lanthimos films and the universe they create. I recently watched Dogtooth, Alps and The Lobster(in one day) and they fascinated me endlessly. His characters don't necessarily act like normal people. They are very monotone, love listing things, spew extremely random facts to other characters, and generally seem to just say whatever crosses their mind. If this interests you, please make a video. I need someone to explain this to me!

yes, though do you sometimes feel that there is not talent and everything seems a stretch... I am there right now where "ideas" have just stopped and I am doubting myself, like if I do write it would be too laboured and would seem like "I am trying to write" Sometimes I feel that there is no "flow" and it starts and stops. Any advice? :(
From my experience you just have to push through it and not really judge what work or how it feels while you are doing it, then another time go back and edit, so that you can separate what is good from what isn't. That way you are freed in the writing process to not care too much and that lack of worrying is what opens things up.
Do you write your scenes on index cards? How do you organize all your ideas regarding the sequence of scenes and scenes, like I have more than one scene or like does a happen before b or does a1 fit better - all these raw ideas where do you put them?
I now do something I learnt rom Jeff Nichols which is right all my ideas for scenes down on individual index cards then when I have a whole bunch ill throw them on the ground and mess them up. Then it becomes like a jigsaw where you have to put them in the best order, obviously ill have a pretty good idea anyway, but it allows me to see everything I have at once. Something ill break a single act down on a whiteboard and just focus in on that but most of the time I need to see the whole grand design otherwise I feel a little lost. Hope this helps!
I am sorry if my questions do not make sense sometimes or are pretty basic. I have another one, so how big is your beat sheet? It has the main turning points right? Where do you put the mini beats within it? Things that lead to the major beats (like your tp) so that you remember them and get a complete skeleton of the story or script? Because outline is more detailed.. Again apologies for so many confusing questions, I do feel like a fool sometimes, stumbling around haha
Its no problem. I try and use the foolscap method from Steven Pressfield, you can google it, but it basically means getting the whole story down on 1 page of A4 paper and if it doesn't fit on their then its too much. Also another great video series on youtube is The Art of Story by Adam Skelter, I think you'd really enjoy it, they are some of the best video essays ever but they also dig into storytelling and all kinda of narrative planning. Hope this helps!
Thanks Christopher, this is one of my favourites to look back on. I think it ended up pretty good because I actually learnt so much from digging into this amazing film. Nemo is just jam packed with great storytelling.
lol the different coloured pens where for the 2 separate story lines, one colour for Marlon and one colour for Nemo, what was interesting doing that was the spacing. The had both equal amount of time during the middle of the film but as we approach the climax, the cutting back and forward becomes more frequent and the time we spend with each becomes shorter as the get closer together. Pixar is awesome!

+Darren - MUST SEE FILMS When you see it you'll be blown away!! Even 3 full months after it came out, I still can't stop talking about it; once the footage is released, I'm making an analyzed review of it! And I just re-watched Nemo for the 200th time; it's such a great film.
So currently I am working on what should I show to show the change in the characters and the challenges that the character would under take... also the central question bit that you said underpins each scene, is quite helpful. I am brainstorming for ideas but coming to a dead end, can you give me some ideas about how I can show challenges and change? My story is about a woman who goes to rehab, now the problem is I am not able to find any challenges for her lol, I have written the first half, but I cannot come up with really good challenges (not throw in lame challenges which I as an audience would feel, meh about). One is therepeutic ones like her interactions with people there, the therapist and group work but these are quite dialogue based etc...nothing really happens here, to think about it, my story is quite similar to finding nemo hehe...Real good work and if you have any suggestions, let me know :)
Cool awesome to hear your working on something, id suggest reading 'The art of Dramatic Writing' I'm re reading it at the moment and it covers a few of thing issues you mentioned like having a strong premise and how that plays into the obstacles that will be in your story. Hope this helps!

No, I mean like a conclusion and summary pf everything you told. You end with an analysis of the change in Nemo's character and then the line "never stopped me." And then video suddenly ends, without any summary or conclusion. That's what I'm missing.

Hey dude, just wanna give you a heads up that you're a little too close to your mic. Your plosives pop a bit too much. Think about moving back another 6 inches or picking up a pop guard. Good stuff, though.

Amazing! iv struggled with the audio so much and always trying to improve. At the moment i use a zoom h4n and a microphone on a stand, i try my best to sound proof. I usually always compress the audio but only last video did i realise you could just and try and get the audio levels the same so it wasn't peaking like crazy and i also used a noise gate to take away and drone. I think a pop filter will help, any other tips or video to refer to. thanks man!
The h4n is a decent field recorder, it should capture audio just fine provided you set your gain levels before hand and nothing clips. What kind of mic? It's way more important the zoom. The gate will do a bit when you're not talking, but seeing how you edit the video the gate won't be closed very often, if you have a hum that you can't get rid of (and can't locate the source of) you might have to do some surgical equalization to notch your offending frequency. The pop filter will definitely make a big difference. In the beginning of this video you can absolutely hear that you're closing in too tightly on your microphone, but I think you eased off of it for the rest of the audio recording. Listen to the low bass pops of your Ps and Bs. Those are called plosives. Ultimately your whole audio track needs some equalization. You have a lot going on in your low/low-mid frequencies and the entire thing would benefit greatly from some high-pass filtering to clear all that mud up. If you want I'll toss you my email address and clean up the audio on your next few videos free of charge. I don't think it would be too much work.

I like the voice personally. I get turned away from some video essays because the voices are too boisterous or annoying. This is the kind of voice I'd enjoy relaxing or napping to. :)

I disagree, his soft Scottish voice gives a personal feel to it.
I like the voice personally. I get turned away from some video essays because the voices are too boisterous or annoying. This is the kind of voice I'd enjoy relaxing or napping to. :)
