My big one is #3, it’s so easy to shoot a profile of a person and leave thinking “oh that’s cool” and then never think about that film again, you’re right it’s really important to make sure your films answer questions , thanks Mark !
Very good video with actionable advice. Summary below but encouraging everyone to watch to get the most out of the advice given: 1. Find your ending first 2. Show, don't tell 3. Your film needs to have a question 4. Show the physical journey and the emotional journey of your character 5. Find out what makes your character unique
Start with the END...... SHOW IT - Don't tell iT .... Ask a Question .... The Physical, Emotional & Metaphysical quest .... What is the challenge to overcome.... Keep it to the point...
Wonderful video...*Storytelling*...a challenge indeed 🌎 I became a writer at age 61 in Bogotá, Colombia. It has been my way to overcome adversity, reencounter with myself, protest elegantly and reach out the World. Thanks. The Venezuelan immigrant writer 🇻🇪
I've been thinking of doing film school for nearly a year now. The first few months I couldn't stop thinking about film school. I found your channel, and you inspire me. In the next few weeks I should find out if I've been accepted into film school, and after almost a year I feel that I have purpose and control over my life again.
Thank you for these tips! I like the way you displayed your own "show not tell" tip in this short video by taking us along to your appointments - to SHOW us how busy you were and not just telling us you had a time crunch to edit and complete the movie in three days. Well done! Cute elevator music audio too
Thanks a lot! Working for a couple of years I tend to forget the most basic principles, but thanks to people like you we get reminded on the easy tricks to good filmmaking.
A while back you switched up the way you make videos. since then you really started to glow and I enjoyed watching your videos more. It's better to see people being natural and themselves rather than trying too hard to be something they're not in order to go with the trends. However, i think its hard to start without doing it because you need a launch to start getting an audience before your transition like yours. I'm glad you're in a position where you can focus mostly on passion. I've learned a lot from your videos so thank you. Currently waiting for my gear and start my own journey full force. Gotta own this summer! Love from Ireland, keep creating.
In my continue search for acceptance you just gave me a massage amount of reassurance. When I write I usually will write the last sentence first. I always thought "You just do things the hard way", so to hear someone I respect so much give this advice is a massive boost of confidence. Much love and positive vibes.
These are spot on - I’ve been editing for a number of years - but it’s Always good to remind yourself of why your editing a certain way. I find after a while I get redundant and automatic with my edits - partially because I’m always under a deadline. These are exactly the tips I needed to refresh and reset my mind. Thanks Mark!
Just found you thru your collab with PM ~ couldn’t be more grateful. Love the attitude of giving that you have to your audience. You don’t hold back the quality of what can make a solid video/film. Thank you for basically being a Jedi to the filmmakers you serve.
Love it Mark. In the same way that you say "a character with no flaws isn't interesting", I'd love to hear you discuss what things you could have done better in your past films. I want to learn from your mistakes just as much as your successes!
I think I found my favorite TH-cam channel here... I am just beginning to shoot random stuff with my smartphone, and have some guidance on the way of thinking is priceless!!! Thank you sir.
Find your ending first. Great, great insight. I've unconsciously done this most of the time, but now I'll intentionally make it a part of my checklist. Every tip in this video is either new or has a new perspective expressed. Thanks for sharing.
I understand what you are talking about to "overcome" for the storytelling but sometimes it's just about to achieve and to strive for something at all. It can be good enaugh. You have achieved a very good chanell where you show your professionalism by just being your selves and do great works. You don't need an Oscar for that. You just do it. Great and thanks for what you will share to others !
Thank you for these tips! I like the way you displayed your own "show not tell" tip in this short video by taking us along to your appointments - to SHOW us how busy you were and not just telling us you had a time crunch to edit and complete the movie in three days. Well done! Cute elevator music audio too 🤭
As my videos are more or less a how to paint type of thing, I really want to incorporate this mindset into all my videos. Thanks for these tips, Mark. Eventually I’ll figure out how to make mini-docs about being an artist while teaching the audience how to paint. The big takeaway here for me is asking and answering a question within the story. My skills are not centered around filmmaking and I just want to stand out as a TH-camr with great visuals and story telling. This video really helps me more than you may know.
Hey Mark, amazing Video! I am a young filmmaker from Austria/Germany and you inspired me to make amazing films. If you ever come to Germany or Austria let me know it!
After reading ‘Save the Cat!: The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need’. These are pretty much aligned with I learned from the book. Btw, multiple times watching this video. So good tips.
That’s great! I had pointers I used to give that were close to these. These are so much better and more encompassing. I wish it hadn’t meandered and had a sponsor, but I get it.
this was extremely insightful. it's interesting to me how these concepts have floated around in my head but sometimes it's hard to piece it together just right until someone points it out. and i think that's what this video just did for me. it helps ground my thoughts into a foundation and i feel like i now have a good starting point to be able to work on a more proper story. i even took notes so i can properly go back to each of these tips and try to actively apply them in the future
I'm new to the channel, what I'm taking from this vid is "the question". Now this has thrown up some good ideas and clarity for my adventures and videos going forward. Although a document of my wild camps I feel they need some reasoning. Really appreciate this vid.
I guess the most important tip was that one about answering questions because your film can be great, but if is not answering something, than that would be just a bunch of cool shots thrown on a timeline ..
It doesn't matter if your shooting a film or running a business, story telling in both is really important, and these tips will work well for business owners too Cheers,
Holy bird! I always get kind of shocked when I watch your videos because they're so well done. I don't know how you don't have more subs than Matti...sorry Matti, gotta change your videos a bit.
That first tip just blew my mind. You hear this concept in self help books. One of my favorite authors Napoleon Hill always talks about having the end in mind. In fact it’s vital to truly have direction and not get distracted so easily. I would have never thought about applying this to film 🎞 This is about to both challenge me and help me at the same time. Has starting at the end gotten any easier for you over time? Also congratulations on your full length film. You are awesome at what you do. Super inspirational. Underrated on this platform. But who cares. The people you bring value to is enough! Thank you for creating this even in your hectic schedule.
Creativity comes from different angles for different people. As a child, my brother did not understand multiplication until he got to division, then multiplication made sense. He is now a mechanical engineer. When I first started writing music, I assumed everyone wrote music from the same perspective I did. Once I was hanging around some other musician/song writers and I made the comment that I had lots of musical riffs I was experimenting with to write lyrics to. They all seem to give me blank stares, as they all wrote the lyrics first, then the music...
Which tip do you find most useful?
My big one is #3, it’s so easy to shoot a profile of a person and leave thinking “oh that’s cool” and then never think about that film again, you’re right it’s really important to make sure your films answer questions , thanks Mark !
the first on know where is the end point
great video as per Mark, tip number 1 and 4 for me, knowing the journey and where it will lead is vital I think. great stuff man.
tip #4 is really great! thanks for making this video. Extremely helpful for me as I make my first longer form documentary.
Probably spend time on the ending💯💯 So good Mark!!
I had never thought of finding my ending first and working backwards. Thank you so much for giving us all these amazing tips
Me neither. Brilliant idea.
Me neither, but I really like the idea! 😊

@@tofamous13 No I did get accepted, I just never expected people online to care. It's also just a lot of busy work, college.
love the "show more than tell" and working towards the end - these are all great tips!

Thanks Mark! Great tips! Love your sound, can you share what mic you are using or maybe your sound editing process
Love it Mark. In the same way that you say "a character with no flaws isn't interesting", I'd love to hear you discuss what things you could have done better in your past films. I want to learn from your mistakes just as much as your successes!

This is literally one of the best videos I’ve seen about this topic! Thank you so much! Wonderful tips and of course, wonderful storytelling 🙌🏽
I understand what you are talking about to "overcome" for the storytelling but sometimes it's just about to achieve and to strive for something at all. It can be good enaugh. You’re right, sometimes watching some navigate the challenge is enough on its own
