I got a band 9 in speaking......I felt like the speaking test was just a way to analyze how comfortable you are at communicating in the English language. I am a member of a hyper-polyglot club....and that is why speaking is not a big deal for me. (I got overall band 9....speaking 9 writing 9 reading 8.5 listening 8.5). There are four things that you have to take into consideration when learning to communicate in ANY language. Pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and FLOW.......I said a lot of BS in my test but I kept a steady flow with no hesitation , I threw in some idioms like ,'Our history defines our future'...that was the last sentence I had said before the examiner ended the test...:\....I even asked the examiner to repeat one of her questions..:\...'Do you think leisure activities are good for a country's economy?'...quite a loaded question.:\....so yeah......if you have a good native accent , it's a plus ...but don't worry if you don't....concentrate on pronunciation and vocabulary..

Having used some discourse markers and given examples to support his answers naturally, I'd give him 6. He was able to achieve the tasks esp in Part 2. In Part 3, it seemed it was challenging for him to expand more on HELP and ATTITUDE. However, overall, he did well - the vocabulary, discourse markers, tone, grammar, and logic. Good job!

To me, despite not being myself an excellent speaker, he gives the idea that he know lots of things but what he lacks is self-confidence, and according to his facial expressions, it does seem he's "thinking". What I mean is that it seems he is translating from italian to English. I don't know if you achieve the same result by both doing and not doing this process but surely it slows you down. Moreover, I personally make mistakes and repeats same words every so oftern but English accent is quite distinguishable, which should be a surplus. I don't want to compare with this pal, but I am offering suggestions to those who have facing difficulties, pershaps who are italians.

I took IELTS in January...got band 9 in speaking.....My topic was 'Talk about something strange that you have done in the past six months and explain why it was strange'.....:\......I thought to myself, 'Something strange that I did ?....I woke up before 10 am once...does that count?'.....but anyway, I just made up a weird story of how I cooked six Arab dishes for a party of fifty people having had no prior experience in cooking Arab cuisine......I just took bits and pieces of reality and mixed it with a healthy dose of fantasy....bottom line....use your imagination....

In fact, I think these questions are a lot better than those utterly trivial ones regarding snacks, friends, etc. People seem to forget that the test is based on questions challenging one's ACADEMIC abilities (I believe this to be the Academic speaking test and not the General Training one), and critical thinking or, in other words, expressing one's opinion about more complex issues is a vital part of it. Most people who take the test need it in order to be accepted to university or other higher institutions, which need to be sure that you live up to their academic expectations. Thus, the test and each of its parts should have a certain degree of complexity, or else there's not really a point in having such language ability tests at all.
I believe academic and general training have the same speaking test. Also personally I did great with my papers and GPA, but I hardly speak in class, that doesn't mean I can't think critically. Not to mention all the presentations and even debates gave you time to prepare and organize your speeches, instead of asking for answers right away like IELTS does.

Where I come from, always having to ask for time to ponder on one's answers will be a disadvantage for sure. And it's not like IELTS requires you to come up with novels; most of the time it's very short answers. Imagine you're in a critical debate and required to express and defend your opinion (which is a vital part of education nowadays).
