  • Mr James Coleman (aka The Rubbish Mechanic: / leadedstar ) recently got a new car. This 1985 Alfa Romeo 90 2.5 Gold Cloverleaf (also known as the Quadrifoglio Oro) fitted with the famous 2.5 V6 Busso engine is unique in this country: there are no others MOTed and taxed for the road at the moment, although a few others are stored away in private collections.
    There will be a forthcoming episode of Tweed Jacket Reviews on this car, but in the meantime, enjoy this walkaround on one of the most puzzling cars of the 1980s. Its very reason for existence still baffles many in the classic car world. Nothing untoward, then!
    As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

      Well, this is the only one taxed in the country, so I am not surprised that you have not seen one before.

    What a brilliant machine. Fast, distinctive, rare and slightly bonkers. A brilliant combo. Those electric window switches, the green lights and the briefcase are wonderful and I approve of the nice playful rasp from the exhaust and beautifully purring engine to boot.
    No wonder Mr Coleman looks like a proud father.

      Mr Coleman is indeed a proud father for this extremely rare Italian sports saloon. It's not just slightly bonkers, it is absolutely out there! Yes, Mr Coleman did give us some nice V6 noises. The full review will show more craziness, of course...

    I'm captivated intrigued by this car, such flair passion ideas in the details, I reckon if it was better publicized had more dealerships in the UK at the time it would have sold much better! I love that period of Bertone design when it was less contrived more freedom of artistic expression. This car will become increasingly valuable because of it's rarity and Bertone design a real connoisseurs car!

      They are very, very rare indeed now. It is really hard to say how much these are worth with so few left, but it may increase in value. That is not why Mr Coleman bought it, though. Alfa Romeo's extremely confusing marketing in the 1980s was principally responsible for the low sales, but the contemporary reputation for rust and poor quality (which was somewhat justified, as you can see) didn't really help either. Once one has a go in one, it is easy to see why people who own them love them, and I do like the design very much.

    It looks like Alfa Romeo were experimenting with style and function with that car, switch gear, no door pockets, the briefcase glove box etc.There is something akin to poetry with the sound of a Alfa Romeo V6😊👍👍

      Yes, they took that government money and really went to town on the 90 with crazy briefcases, weird switches and a strange dashboard and then forgot to add even a modicum of practicality. When you hear that Busso, though, you do tend to forget such things....

    This reminds me of the Alfa Romeo Milano of around the same time period; similar styling, scattered controls, and a wonderful V6 as well. The dashboard is absolutely unbelievable! And most US vehicles did not have door pockets until much, much later. Typical Alfa fascia styling, but moving around the vehicle, especially the rear, extremely unique and very of its period! Oh, and the handbrake is definitely Alfa of its time, I believe the Milano had a similar handbrake.
    An excellent, well looked after example!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Alfa Romeo 75/Milano was quite similar to this one underneath. I prefer the styling of this car, though. I think some of the switchgear is similar to a 75 as well. Oh yes, typical Alfa Romeo strangeness, but this one is probably the weirdest of all. Of course, they also shared the lovely V6 Busso engine on some models!

      Yes, they sold something like 150 in this country in just two years! It's got just about as much strangeness in a car as I have ever seen. I actually did drive it in the full review without damaging it!

    It reminds me a bit of a Lancia Thema. I bet the Freephone number had a few calls back in the day and was probably engaged most of the time. The car is definitely handsome rather than pretty and has some unusual styling quirks. I look forward to the Tweed Jacket Review on this rare rare car. Good work sir!

      Oh sir, I hope that you enjoy the episode of Tweed Jacket Reviews when it comes out! Yes, the Freephone number probably did result in a jammed switchboard back in the day. Definitely a handsome car, it suits Mr Coleman down to the ground!

    Not seen one on the road for probably 30 years , it’s utterly bonkers , in the early 80’s I had a ride in a neighbours Lancia Trevi , I think, that had a dashboard like Swiss Cheese ! Full of holes where the warning lights and switches were !

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, the Lancia Beta Trevi! Certainly worthy of consideration on this channel for that mad dashboard alone. I don't know which is stranger, to be honest...

    Very interesting thank you...roadster life on YT have the complete history. The reason, from personal experience of multiple air vents emulated Rolls and Jaguar fitted with full climate control, this allows greater circulation of air conditioned cabin air at lower fan speeds. Great review thank you

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, this isn't the review, it's just a preview walkaround! It's going to get even more crazy. Yes, we watched the Roadster Life video as it is one of the only English language videos on the Internet which talks about this amazing car. Thanks for the information about the vents, this car doesn't have air conditioning, but I imagine ones for other markets would have done.

    • @happyhermit2022
      @happyhermit2022 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting RHD vehicles for Alfa were always compromised...the climate control system was always included in mainland Europe. The necessary exchange of refrigeration pipework and the location of the evaporator was deemed an unnecessary expense by Alfa as at the time the RHD market did not understand the importance of climate control. Hence the vents 🤗

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@happyhermit2022 , it sounds like what happened with the Citroen Saxo, onto which was difficult to fit air conditioning for right hand drive markets without losing the glovebox entirely... Alfa, of course, sold so few right hand drive 90s that it wouldn't have been worth fitting air conditioning anyway!

    Thank you Joseph. I have always loved this car even though it's really a facelifted Alfetta. Does the active front spoiler still work?

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's actually more than a facelifted Alfetta, as a lot of the body panels are new. Mind you, the structure underneath is very similar, and those doorhandles are straight off an Alfa 6. I have a little something coming up in the review which will answer your question, I believe.

      Yes, it's the only one currently with an MOT in the country from what I understand. She is just awaiting a new engine at the moment. Extremely rare over here (something like 150 imported in total) and less than ten UK market survivors, most of them are now in a private collection. I think that the link to the full review we filmed the next day is in the video description below.

      Well, this one entered storage in around 1994, and then was recommissioned in 2018-9, so it prevented it from falling apart... Very, very few left now!
