  • Hello TH-cam,
    This is a follow up video for the 2016 Kia Forte that had a massive Sludge problem.

    The owner tried to get his oil changed at Jiffy Lube and they refused to change it. They told him it was a liability concern and they would not be taking on the risk. He claims he changed the oil 6k miles ago but we had our suspicions. Keep in mind the Kia only has 60K miles on it. We decided to help him out and tear off the valve cover to see what kind of mess he created. Follow along the journey as we tear apart the engine and discover the SLUDGE Factory inside.

    The thing that surprises me most is that Jiffy Lube had the integrity to say, "No. Take it to a mechanic."

      We were also surprised that Jiffy Lube actually looked under the oil cap before starting any work. They must have been sued before for engine damage and are not taking on any liability in the future.
      It was great of them to tell him to go straight to a shop to get it looked at. They even topped off his oil for free so kudos to them.

      That's the advice I've been giving people over the years - AVOID quick lube places at ALL costs! That's the expressway to a vehicle's early grave.

      @@dantesinfernopurgatory7826 That is why perform all of our own maintenance on all our cars. We do not trust anyone to work on our cars, regardless of the issue. One way or another we will figure out to get it repaired. Cheers!

    I can't believe you got rid of most of the Forbidden Marmite in that engine! I've seen engines with less sludge be deemed write-offs.
    This wasn't an oil change, it was a damn exorcism!

      @@bobbg9041 No way to know without a teardown. All we can do is monitor the oil level over time to see if any oil burn is occurring.
      After the first 1k miles, we have not seen any evidence of oil loss. We will continue to monitor ever y1k miles until the next 3k mile oil change.

    The simplest statement of all time is very true after watching this video: OIL CHANGES ARE CHEAP VS BUYING A NEW ENGINE!!!
    Had this newer KIA's oil change interval kept going, the engine would be featured on the "I DO CARS" TH-cam channel.

    The owner is very lucky!!! Those cars are very sensitive to extended oil change intervals. I've owned one and I was changing the oil every 3k miles and was burning about 1/2 quart since the beginning. Good job!!!

      Forced induction coupled with direct injection with Korean engineering will do that unfortunately

      This is the LX model so it has the 1.8L MPI motor, not sure if they have the same issues as the 2.0L GDO engines? This is our first time working on the Korean brand as we mainly focus on Euro stuff.

      @@BradleysGarage mpi? So I guess that port fuel and direct injection? I’m not familiar with the 1.8. I may have over generalized thinking most Kia’s and Hyundais are turboed with DI only. Last I heard, only Ford and Toyota implemented the dual port fuel and direct injection combination.

      @@4runner1grfe MPI is just Multi Point Injection,
      After Carbi cars, the first step that most manufacturers went with was a single large injector where the carbi once was,
      They then went to MPI which just means that each cylinder has it's own injector/s
      So if this car doesn't have GDI, then it has port injection (so the fuel injectors are located on the inlet manifold).

    This was an awesome series. Great job, you no doubt saved that little engine. Besides big hunks, I think that amber/dark color of the oil shows the carbon/dirt being suspended by the detergents and removed in the oil through changing as intended. No big hunks to plug up passages like the days of old oil pre-detergents. Great job

      Thanks for the kind words Steve, glad you enjoyed the video. We feel pretty good about how things turned out. Not much debris coming out after the secondary flushes so that was a good sign. I'm sure there will be small residual amounts coming off over the next few thousand miles. We will check on it every 1k miles until the next 3k oil change.

    Its genuinely nice to see these before and afters under the valve cover.
    99.95% of folks making a video will remove the valve cover once if we are lucky (before flush) than basically say rest assured its done the job. I like to see before, and after.

    I remember the guys in the shop doing a similar process on a Saab 9-3. Came into the shop for it's FIRST oil change since new. It was at 40,000 miles! After all the flushed , etc it ran amazing. Virtual no wear in the engine. Those Saab engines, especially the 2.3t are amazing.

      I work in Walmart in the Auto Care Center, and about 10 years ago, we had a Dodge Ram 2500 DIESEL come in for it's first oil change....at 40,000 miles. The guy using the truck never ran a diesel before, and it was his company work truck. He worked in the oil patch so he was using the truck every day and put a couple hundred miles on it every day. So he didn't know it required much more servicing than even a gas should be receiving. But 40,000 miles on any oil is never a good idea.
      Anyway, I was the unfortunate lower bay tech on the oil change. Arguably what came out of the drain plug could no longer justifiably be called "oil". I would describe it as carbon/sludge in a fluid suspension. Yes I ended up getting it on my hand and NO I could not wipe it off. I couldn't even hold onto a wrench. I had to go wash my hands before I could finish the oil change. Afterwards, I advised the guy to only run maybe 1000-1500 miles then immediately get the oil changed again to try to clean out the engine. He didn't come back to Walmart, so I have no idea what the end result of that was.

      Looks like there was only about 253k 9-3's sold in the USA from 1999-2011. That works out to be 21k total per year.
      Going on 25 years old, there can't be that many left on the road, regardless of how good the engines are.

    FYI - the Marvel Mystery Oil is good stuff. It works slow. I’ve used it in a GM 4.8 to keep a lifter from tapping (common problem.) After 2 to 3 3k oil changes, it will remove all the varnish.

    The oil looked pretty dark after the 420 mile run. I’d say it’s still pushing baked sludge out of the oil galley’s and block walls. Probably repeated oil changes every 3k will get the rest out. A bottle of Seafoam in the oil will clean the snot out.

      Modern full synthetic oil usually turns dark very quickly, but it does not mean a decrease in performance. Combustion gasses and heat

      @bruwin It definitely had a little reddish hue to it. We may continue to add 4oz of MMO to the next few oil changes just to finish cleaning things.

      Have run full syn. From 500 miles to present 245k miles, changed every 10k miles. It never got dark untill 160k miles. It was distressing to throw away such clean looking oil at 10k miles. 5.3 chev. Silverado 2004.

    Great video. Back in 05 i bought a 96 jimmy 4.3 with 158k on it. I changed all the fluids. ALL OF THEM. I did the kerosine flush for the oil as well. It didnt have sludge thankfully. It never had any oil related issues ever. Just 2 water pumps, a radiator, and power steering pump. I sold it at 312k.

    This video is a gem, I have a 2010 Mazda 5 which is my first vehicle, and it has been a bit neglected, now I'm facing all the problems of a neglected vehicle but I've been able to tackle most of them and learn in the proces. When I move to the preemptive maintenance stage, this video will be my guide. 🙌

      Maintenance report:
      1st oil change 60k miles
      2nd oil change 60k miles
      3rd oil change 60k
      4th oil change 61k miles

      Hard to know exactly how many miles since the last oil change but definitely seems like way more than 6k miles. We are thinking more like 12-15k miles sine the last oil change based on what the internals look like.
      He has had it since around 30k and claimed to have changed the oil 4-5 during this period. I'm sure the cheap oil changes at Jiffy Lube did not help the situation.

    Awesome, informative, and scientific video. My 2005 Jeep Liberty with a 3.7 V6 definitely needs a series of flush such as these. I'm at 180,000 miles !!!!

      Same vehicle now at 226k small leak in rear main and keep getting moisture from what I assume is a leaking head gasket but it still running strong and still has the original transmission.

    This was excellent, and I watched each second... couple of observations , you should have figured that with the excellent dilution solutions you added, that it would put the sludge in suspension and thus no clumps.... second, please use a gasket removal spray like loctite or other... no more razors... the removal sprays are so good that you can literally wipe to perfectly metallic surface with a cloth after applying... great work, and thank you for literally saving this motor

      @BradleysGarage LOCTITE SF7200... doesn't run ( unless way over applied).. after 15-20 minutes, you lift the gasket away with your fingers and then spray 7200 into a cloth to wipe away the remaining gasket residue. Not required, but I use Potent Alcohol for final wipe...

    Hi, for added protection add a half a pint of marvel mystery oil to every other full tank of gas. At least a few times in the future

    If there is ever a next time you need to do a heavy sludge flush check out BG's Dynamic Engine Restoration Service Kit. I used that stuff once and an old boot came out the oil drain.

    Also cheap dexron ATF is good to add to engine oil for cleaning a sludged engine out, ATF has really high detergent content! 👍

      Thanks for the comments Allen, it was not easy cleaning that valve cover. The new one is over $250 so a little elbow grease got it done for basically nothing.
      After getting the motor cleaned up we did the plugs and valve cover gasket.

    Compression looks good, owner really lucked out. Looks like others have already mentioned BG, but it's really the only reliable way to get it all out - they sell a large kit called "BG Dynamic Engine Cleaner" that comes with two huge jugs (2nd one is a "rinse" oil). It's similar to the smaller cans called "EPR" that you can obtain more readily, but in a much larger quantity. Not cheap, I think it's $350+ and takes 45-minutes and multiple oil changes to perform, but afterwards the results are amazing. Love the series so far, 3k OCI is what you want - short-tripping puts the owner in the severe service category.

      We have recommended the owner to start doing 3k oil changes. Hopefully he has learned a valuable lesson on the importance of routine maintenance on his car moving forward. The goal will be for him to be able to change his own oil moving forward.

    Liqui Molly engine flush will do the same end result with less steps. Do fresh oil and filter + LM then drain and put fresh in. Really helped when I was following the "recommended OCI for my 09 Accent was 7500 according to manual". Never again, feels like a play to get you to mess up your engine slowly so the dealer can get more money.

    I posted this as a reply to a comment below but figured it would be a good comment to post for everyone to see.
    I work in Walmart in the Auto Care Center, and about 10 years ago, we had a Dodge Ram 2500 DIESEL come in for its first oil change....at 40,000 miles. The guy using the truck never ran a diesel before, and it was his company work truck. He worked in the oil patch, so he was using the truck every day and put a couple hundred miles on it every day. So he didn't know it required much more servicing than even a gas should be receiving. But 40,000 miles on any oil is never a good idea.
    Anyway, I was the unfortunate lower bay tech on the oil change. Arguably what came out of the drain plug could no longer justifiably be called "oil". I would describe it as carbon/sludge in a fluid suspension. Yes, I ended up getting it on my hand and NO I could not wipe it off. I couldn't even hold onto a wrench. I had to go wash my hands before I could finish the oil change. Afterwards, I advised the guy to only run maybe 1000-1500 miles then immediately get the oil changed again to try to clean out the engine. He didn't come back to Walmart, so I have no idea what the end result of that was.

      Excellent work here! I have a 2017 Hyundai Elantra I bought new. Has this same engine. It just turned 100.000 miles last month. 3000 mile oil changes since new. It sounds perfectly healthy, nice and quiet, uses no oil between changes. And the underside of the oil cap has nothing on it. The whole car has been absolutely excellent. 0 repairs, 0 issues. Just 2 batteries, and 2 sets of new tires. Thats it! In 2021 I bought a new kia K5 GT LINE with premium package. Love it. 1.6L Turbo GDI, doing 3000 mile oil changes using Castrol Edge. Using the Elantra for my 80 mile round trip to work to keep the mileage down on the new car. I'm in so cal also. You have a new Subscriber 😊

    Ive always been told you can use 1 quart Transmission fluid, 100 miles before next oil change. High in detergents and also lubricates. Cheers

      Yep, the old engine flush technique I was taught was to replace the oil with ATF and diesel 50:50. Drive for 100-200 miles, then drain and check for chunks. If there were chunks, then put fresh ATF+diesel and drive another 100 miles. When you finally had no more chunks then you switched back to regular oil.

      That was in looser tolerance engines, do that to a high tolerance engine and it won't work out well. ​@@TracyMNelson

    You should remove the valve lift solenoid(VTEC Solenoid or what ever its called for KIAs).
    These are normally oil controlled and these normally have screens on them and these can get blocked with flushes.

    This is eye opening, the 2016 kia soul i was gifted had been serviced at the dealer exclusively since new and still has some warranty left. But today i will check the oil cap to see how clean it is inside the engine. I hope they changed the oil as promised. It runs great just turtle slow but we just had the 60 k service done and the ecu was updated and it runs a lot better now and has a V tech like pep to it now above 4k rpm so it is a bit more fun to drive now. The car get 27 miles to the gallon on a regular basis and still looks new thanks to me.

      Definitely keep on the frequent oil changes. The VVT solenoids are very finicky and require clean oil to work well.

    It was nice to hear you also called the cover a "Rocker Cover". In my younger day I had never heard it called a "Valve Cover". I think the younger mechanics (40 years old and younger) of today are the only ones who call it a valve cover - I wont, Rocker Cover is way too engrained in me. I am talking about mechanics here in Australia.

      Thanks for the kind words Rob, we are pretty happy with the results. Our thought is if the "cover" is not making contact with anything then it's probably just a valve cover. If the "cover" is making contact with the cams or some internals in the cylinder head then it's probably a rocker cover. You could even call it a "cam cover" on these OHC motors.
      At the end of the day it really comes down to how your were taught and what you are comfortable with.

    Cool little series…I can’t believe that car still ran. You should try ATS 505 CRO. I don’t know what magical out of superstitious hocus pocus they use but it’s the best oil treatment I’ve ever used. 👍🏻

    Great job all around. I'm a big Hyundai Kia fan. I've purchased 7 or 8 new ones since 2007. My latest purchase was two 2022 Tucson Hybrids (non plug in, only because they were never available here in Illinois) I bought an SEL Convenience (mid trim for myself) and a Limited (top trim) for my wife. They're amazing cars for the money, 33K and 39,5K. Getting 37 MPG out of each of them over the last few years. I'm a 3000 mile oil change guy myself. It's cheap insurance for these tiny 1.6 Turbo engines which work hard. Thanks for sharing all your great tips. Go Niners. Cheers

      the 1.6 in that model hybrid i believe is still gdi as well so 3,00 miles intervals should help with carbon buildup, it kills Hyundai motors besides the metal debris left indie the motors.

    Had an engine just like that back in the 80s. I used diesel fuel and cheap motor oil. 50/50. It worked. Drove that old Ford LTD for three years.

    I have a 2014 Kia Soul ! Had to get an engine replacement this past year. Was burning over 2 quarts on the 1000 mile engine test. Had to have it tested a few times but was all replaced under warranty. Hoping to get a few years before this one has issues.

    Looks like it is ready for some long life now. Just drive it and run 3000 mile oil changes. pulling the oil pan and cleaning the sludge was probably the best action that you took. I wish my 62 Lincoln oil pan was that easy to access.

    The initial treatment got rid of most of the sludge. The subsequent treatments would dissolve the remnants which would be picked up by the filter. Wouldn’t it in fact be very surprising if there were any chunks seen in the coffee filters?
    The varnish may clean up with continued frequent oil changes. It seems like it could be a problem for humming up the moving parts like valve springs, rockers and any oil control solenoids.
    The best thing you can do for that owner is to teach him how to do his own oil changes.

      Thanks for the comments Craig, we will check it every 1k miles up to the next 3k oil change. I'm sure they will be small amounts of residual coming off for many more miles. We could still see the walls with some burnt on residue.
      Jake is definitely performing the next oil change on his Kia. he has now seen it done 5 times so there are no excuses moving forward.

    well, there is no doubt that what you have done has done that engine a world of good. I only wish we could get this video to everyone who thinks that changing their oil is just an unnecessary annoyance. anyone who knows anything about engines knows how important that good, clean, fresh oil will extend the life of the engine better than any other thing you can do for it. you must really like this guy to do this much work for him.

    Good job on the flush with the diesel. I usually just got a few quarts of Marvel Mystery Fluid replaced that with oil and let it run for 30 minutes or automatic transmission fluid works really well it's a good detergent

    Been doing a transmission fluid in the engine oil. I’ll add some BG engine flush right before the next oil change. 2012 Scion XB using 2 plus quarts every 3 to 5 thousand miles.

      He's just a 20 year old kid that doesn't know anything about cars or what is needed to keep them running properly. He helped with the repair so he wants to learn and understand things.
      Hopefully he has learned a valuable lesson on the importance of routine maintenance on his car moving forward. The goal will be for him to be able to change his own oil moving forward.

What still amazes me is that folks have all the info at their fingertips on the web now , but can’t seem to make use of it. And, this applies to engineering students I sometimes mentor.     Have been wondering how this was doing. Glad it appears engine survived without eating a bearing. No forbidden glitter.
    I know someone with a 2015 soul with the 1.6 na and they were so low on oil dipstick was dry. Variable valve timing wasn't happy under throttle and threw a light. Dude check your oil and get it changed regularly! With the known problems these have no need to invite disaster.

      Thanks for the comments. We were expecting a little more excess debris to come out after the secondary flushes but everything looked really clean. Also happy that were are not getting any metal in the oil, hopefully we were able to salvage the engine.
      We will continue to monitor it every 1k miles until the next oil change. Hopefully we got it squared away and it continues to run great from this point forward. Cheers!

    I got a Ford with 82K miles on it that was sludged worse than that. I couldn't even see the pushrods! I ran a quart of diesel in it after removing the chunks from the heads that I could reach. I didn't get nearly as good results as you did, but I managed to get about 3 more years from it before it completely gave up. The original owner (I knew him) didn't believe in oil changes; he just topped it off when it was low.

    I love using MMO! What’s your opinion on Berryman B12 chemtool or seafoam to flush the crankcase?

      Thanks for the comments. We haven't tried either one of those products in the crankcase. We have only used Seafoam on the fuel side of the motor but we found it works great there. We have heard guys using the B12 as a piston soak to help with carbon build up on rings though.

    I am really expressed with you and your persistence. I would of stopped with the first 2 diesel engine flush, and watched it every 3,000 miles at the oil change. I believe if people change their oil to Mobil 1 there is no way that type of sludge will build up. I was lucky to find out about Mobil 1, at 20 years old. I only use Mobil 1 for 40years!

    Glad to see you used Marvel Mystery Oil! I add it to my engine and even my fuel tank. Is the best, it is slower to work because is not harsh, so you need to use the car for a week or so, but it sure does the job without any risk at all. You can even leave it until the next oil change. I have used MMO for more than 50 years! old and brand new cars.

    Wow great info! I do use pennzoil ultra platinum on my 2021 Bronco and Super Tech on my 2022 Ford Maverick, but will be switching to pennzoil as well. I do my oil changes every 6 months never exceeding 4k miles. Is that something you would do to your own vehicles?

      Thanks for the comments Ramon, appreciate the feedback. Depending on the car, way it's driven and manufacturer recommendations, we run from 3k on performance cars, up to 10k on our diesel engines. No matter what we are using Full Synthetic on every vehicle, typically Liqui Moly or Torco.

    Marvel Mystery Oil is a great product in vehicles with questionable oiling systems. It saved the lifters on a 200k mile Tahoe I had. I ran it for a whole 3000 mile oil change and it just ran quieter the longer it was in there.
    I am blown away by how much cleaner that engine is inside. Great job cleaning it out. The owner should definitely stick to 3k mile intervals from now on. No doubt there will continue to be small particles breaking loose for some time, but nothing a good oil filter can’t handle.

    I'd install a container of Rislone P/N 4102 with the oil change and run it the full interval. Do that for a few oil changes. Rislone has some ester content which is a slow-acting cleaner. This can help dissolve sludge in smaller passages within the engine without breaking loose large chunks, to include oil control rings.

    I’ve been using marvel mystery oil. From the late’70 and I still use it today, I put it in my oil and also in my gas. My Toyota and my ford runs very well. My Toyota is 25 years old and runs awesome

      Thanks for the comments Arthur. We are not sure which one is "better" as they both seem to have some benefits. It really came down to what we had on hand at the time of the video. It was just easier to use diesel for this one but we may try ATF on a future project.     I bought a Ford escort once really cheap because it had loud ticking from the engine. Turns out the oil wasn't changed in a long time, the oil came out like sludge. I ran seafoam in the engine for about 30 minutes idling and got a lot of build up out and pulled the valve cover and it was still a lot of sludge. Then changed the oil again and it ran a lot quieter. I sold the car and about 6 months later the lady's son blew up the motor.

    Thanks for the update link. Surprised the compression still up. Wonder if you could pull a plug and use a small camera to go inside and look for scoring? Likely none with those compression numbers. Should put an oil plug in that has the magnet on it. Seafoam seems to be real good at cleaning up (through gas additive and oil additive), and use some Royal Purple oil - but that will likely have to run 2-3 times and do regular mileage oil changes... more of a long term thing. What do the intake valves look like? All crudded up from the lack of multi-port injection washing?

      Thanks for the comments Rick, we tried to use a little camera scope down the cylinder. The problem is it wasn't clear while recording the little screen so we decided to leave that part out.
      Great suggestion getting a magnetic oil drain plug, just to see if there is any metal flakes floating around. Also could not really see the valves clearly with the camera since it's hard to make a 90 degree turn with our setup.

    Many years ago ( in the leaded fuel days) I bought a Toyota HiAce with an 18R (2 litre SOHC) engine second hand which I serviced immediately. The oil was tarry. The compression was uneven.
    I changed the oil and wasn't happy. Then I flushed it with Redex and soaked the bores overnight with Redex as per procedure. Lots of smoke on start up next day ( I may have done this more than once).
    The behaviour of the engine became normal fairly quickly and the compression was soon within normal parameters. I never pulled the engine down but understand the gummy rings were freed by the Redex soak.
    I eventually sold the vehicle which continued to run clean.
    By the way, the best thing ever was getting rid of dirty leaded fuel which gummed rings, created sludge and destroyed exhausts.
    If General Aviation would grow some balls their engines would last more that 5 minutes.

      They all looked pretty similar to us, it may just be how much varnish was wiped off during the multiple flushes. We didn't take the time to wipe each individual cam lobe one by one.
      Even if there is more wear on a few, there isn't anything that we can do at this point. Just got to take care of it moving forward and hope for the best.

    Good video. Friendly advise though, use way less sealant that you showed putting on the oil pan, bead should be no bigger than 1/8" and mostly towards the outside of the lip, just rounding the bolts. Slivers, or excess on inside can and will fall off and clog oil pickup tube restricting oil flow locking up engine. Plenty of locked up cores for no oil, because of this and sludge in piston rings burning up all the oil. Take care.

    So was the first qt of diesel just sitting in there, without it running?

      The first quart of diesel was just poured through the crankcase. We just let it flow out of the drain plug after the oil was taken out. We then added 3.2 quarts of fresh oil along with 1 quart of diesel then ran the engine at idle for 20 minutes.

    18:10 Take note quick lube places and dealer service centers. The torque spec isn't "15 seconds with my air impact" for any car.

    I’m buying my son a 2012 Toyota Corolla with 100k miles. Would you recommend doing a flush on all used high mileage cars as a good refresh or starting point?

      Thanks for the questions Chris. It would be a great idea to do a normal flush just so you know you are starting your ownership off with a clean slate. You have no way of really knowing what or how the previous owner performed maintenance. Even if they have receipts, there is no guarantee of what has been actually done. It's an inexpensive repair that can provide some piece of mind.
