    30 minute videos are the best.
    In other news having a video of conversation with a customer with ballpark dollar amounts included is a very welcome innovation. I was thinking throughout the video that it might be worthwhile doing a compression check (low dollar test) before tearing into the engine as there might be other issues with an engine that had extended oil change intervals. But asked and answered in the discussion. Also great customer service. I think Ray did a great job in explaining the options making it clear that it was the customer's choice, but also offered his opinion as to what HE (Ray) would do if it was his vehicle. Customers, clients, patients should always be aware when a choice is theirs to make, but sometimes they actually want to hear what a professional would choose were that shoe on their own foot.

    I do a bit of basic mechanical as a hobby, I have dealt with a few Hyundai's and one kia that had some very questionable oil change intervals, and one Hyundai was 20,000 kilometres over due for a service, then before that it was 10,000 kilometres, anyway once I cut the filter open it was full of metal. I learnt very quickly kia and Hyundai's engines are not usually forgiving when it comes to lack of maintenance.

      I do my own mechanical work as well and minor jobs for family and friends.
      Modern engines are more reliant than ever on frequent maintenance, they're not like an engine from 30 years ago where it didn't really matter if you were a bit past the schedule for an oil change or a trans flush or even a timing belt they'd likely be fine.
      As Ray has pointed out these engines are made on a knifes edge of cost vs reliability, the parts they use just don't have the engineering leeway to be tolerant of missed services. Thats why these GDI engines jokingly stand for Generally Destroyed Inside.
      Just another example of planned obsolescence in manufacturing for a disposable society.

Took it to the Chevy dealer from which it came new, and was told an engine seal broke (guessing it was actually a head gasket). $2500 estimate (estimate not quote!) to repair. Asked the value of the car as-is on trade-in $2500. Took it to a Ford dealer and they also offered me $2500 on a trade for a new 2011 Focus (and yes I told them about the oil). So far the Ford runs well, and I have sworn off Chevrolet forever.

As to the rubber getting old and hard, there were no leaks of fluids outside of the engine, and there aren't any rubber parts that i know of (inside the engine) separating the oil and coolant passages. All of the internal gaskets are metal or composites, and should be relatively immune to infrequent driving.

      I have owned several Hyundai/Kia vehicles over the years, all with good experience.
      2004 Hyundai Elantra - 140,000 miles when I sold it, only issue was a transmission shift solenoid @ 98,000 miles covered under warranty.
      2004 Hyundai Sonata - 124,000 miles when given to nephew, who is still driving it. A few engine sensors have needed replacement and power steering pump replaced,
      2005 Hyundai Tucson - 45,000 miles without a single issues when traded (vehicle just too small for needs).
      2009 Hyundai Santa Fe - 167,000 trouble free miles and still used as a daily driver.
      2010 Hyundai Santa Fe - 208,000 miles when traded in, only repairs were an alternator and intake replacement (just replaced with a 2024 Kona).
      2018 Kia Soul - 48,000 miles and no issues as a daily driver for my mom.
      2018 Hyundai Santa Fe (with same 3.3 engine in video) - 59,000 miles and going just fine as a daily driver for my wife.
      All but 1 are/were serviced every 5,000 miles with synthetic 5w-30 or 10w-30 oil.
      The Elantra was used for all highway driving and I did 7,500 mile oil changes on that one.
      They all have transmission fluid drain and fill done every 30,000 miles. Coolant after 5 years, then every 2 after that.
      Yes Hyundai/Kia has had some problem engines even with proper maintenance, but for the most part, take care of them and they are fine.
      750,000 miles on Hyundai/Kia vehicles and I am happy.
       @wolfman9999999 well said.
      I do know several that have had major issues with their H/K vehicles. One was an Elantra with the 2.4 Theta that had the recall issue, he got a new motor for free and is still driving it.
      Almost all the others that have had issues were those that match your description, buy a cheap car, don't care for it, and wonder why it dies.
      Had a co-worker than had a 2014 Soul engine lock up on her, no oil on dipstick, she said she had the oil changed "a while back", which according to the sticker was 2 years, 14,000 miles ago, and she said she had no idea how to check the oil. She somehow got it covered under warranty.

      I found that the oil usage issue, that some are having with Kia DEI fuel systems, are from the oil rings clogging up. When ours started using massive oil, we decided to start changing the oil and filter as soon as a quart was used (@ 1,200 to 1,500 miles). After about 7 oil changes, changing it after 1 quart of loss/use was detected, we noticed it was going farther and farther with each change before it used any oil. We are back to the way it was as purchased (going 3,500 miles between oil changes with little to no oil used). But, I'm not expecting it to last and will probably have to go through that again. Bottom line is we will be getting rid of our Kia Soul as soon as we can.

      @@owenhill-vf7ko did the oil get dirty faster with Restore and Protect? That was my first experience on a Telluride with 60k and 5000 mile dealer oil changes. I will change it myself from now on with top quality oil.

    I wonder how much the dealer will give them in trade. Sad you didn't get your hands on the engine for an I Do Cars style teardown.
    Out of curiosity, how many hours does the book quote for the engine swap?

    i agree with you 99% of the time.
    this is the 1% I don't. going 1 oil change too long (yes 18k is only 1 change missed), wont cause sludge and problems as long as the oil is kept full. This is LACK OF OIL, not becasue of 1 missed oil change.
    These are all over here where I am in Europe, and they last a good amount of time. Oil is changed mainly every once a year or more. some people go 2 years every change. They have well into the 200-300k on the clocks.

    • @XStuntManiac
      @XStuntManiac 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Not really. Oil does wear, if it didn't we wouldnt have a need to replace it. It gets more and more contaminated with unburnt fuel, soot, gasses from burning and all, it gets dirty and loses it's specification. If you do top it off once in a while due to it burning oil you could get it just a bit longer since there's more fresh oil in it, but you can't just rely on it to keep the engine working.
      There's also an oil filter to consider, it holds only so much dirt and soot until it clogs up and starts releasing oil with the overflow valve and thus releasing unfiltered oil into your components.

      Older cars yes but these newer cars just aren't built tough, so many newer cars with timing problems, my dads old E28 went well over the 350k mileage without a single issue and it got a yearly maybe every 2 years service but the newer bemmers like the E90's ect reach around 60k mileage and if it hasn't had 15k oil interval changes the timing chain basically fails... just not built like they used to be back in the day.

    Is USA oil inferior to European oil? I ask because oil change internals in Europe are routinely about the miles this Kia did without a multitude of failed engines. Could it be Florida oil gets a harder time due to the higher ambient heat + constant aircon usage?
    (I change my oil @10k miles or yearly intervals with F/S oil).

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      US engines are typically much higher power output, so the oil is run harder. Note this is a 3.3 l engine, when the corresponding model in the EU area would be a 2.0l engine, in the same block. so the US engine has higher power output compared to the EU block ,and also has much more severe operating conditions, because of long distances traveled every day, and because of this and lots of short drives, because in the USA you drive to the local stores, while the rest of the world you either walk 3 minutes, or have a once a week shop habit. Remember in the USA you often have people commuting 4 hours a day, often in stop start traffic, as there is little to no public transit, and thus a vehicle has a cold start, then run foot flat for 2 hours, then from that to off and cool, down, and repeat. Much more aggressive drive style as well, almost binary in pedal position, either foot flat, or hard on the brake, because there is no defensive driving taught, or any sort of care for fuel economy, because USA fuel is cheap. Leads to fuel dilution, high engine loads, and also because of higher internal stress early failures
      By me that same Sedona comes with a 2.0l 4 cylinder engine, as there are not many V6 and V8 engines, and also most vehicles have lower power ratings compared to the US model. Yes much lower power, but they then again also last a lot longer as well.

      People in the US drive far more than Europeans. 12-15k is considered average mileage, i know several people who drive 20-30k miles a year!
