I have received a request from my student to demo how to do German Short Rows using Portuguese Style of Knitting. I have never done this before, but that's the beauty of teaching: you learn so much from your students. After doing some research and watching some knitters do this, I have learned and here I am posting the video to you.
German short rows are wonderful and easy and even easier using Portuguese where the yarn is always available in the front of the work. Watch and see for yourself! You will never do short rows in any other way!

This is a wonderful video! You did the German Short Row process slowly and clearly. Also, the white background really helps us see the work you are doing. Thanks!

Very clear. I tried to figure this out on my own but your way is much easier! Are there some general principles to follow as we come across new stitches to "translate" them into Portuguese style?

Hi Andrea I really appreciate your videos. If I am doing knitting in the round for a sweater and I’m knitting inside ( ie Purl wise) when I do the German short rows would I just turn my work outside and follow these instructions? I hope that makes sense. Thank you Des

Yes, Despina, you are right! Since the German short rows are worked flat (back and forth), you start working on the purl side, then turn and follow the video (or directions on your pattern). I am glad I could help with my TH-cam videos. I have more coming...

I would love to learn how to Portuguese Knit German short rows in garter stitch. Also, do I need to stop one stitch before I do the W&T?? EX: pattern states knit 7, W&T. I am knitting the Butterfly-Papillon Shawl which is all garter stitch with short rows. Thank you, Judy

If you are doing Garter Stitch Judy, just follow the instructions of the purl side that I teach you here. You are purling every row. You make “weird” stitches, no W&turn, work the weird stitches as purl two together. Is that clear?

Hi Andrea, I have one more question, once I complete the short row how to I go back to purling in the round? I just fined the short row and I noticed That I am now stuck with knit stitch in the round otherwise there will be hole if I start purling in the round. Thanks again for all your help

Instead of finishing your short rows on the knit side, finished with a purl side and keep going around, even if you work on more stitch. You can always increase a stitch somewhere if that count is going to be important later. Does that help?

Yes, thank you, that makes sense, such an easy solution
but I was confusing myself. Thank you so much.😊

Hi Andrea one last question. When I I did my German Short row, I did not read your instructions properly, and I started the German short rows on the knit side, which ended up causing the problem of a gap, which you helped me solve with finishing on the purl side, which totally worked. But now after I separated for sleeves, And added a pleat to the front, think I may have made my back into my front, ami suppose to be reversing instructions of a pattern if I am knitting Portuguese style? Thank you

Hi Despina! I am afraid to answer "reversing directions" for Portuguese. Can you just W&T and go the other direction, working from inside out? If this is going to complicate too much, just go ahead on the knit side. Do you mind the knit stitch?

Hi Andrea, sorry I was without internet for a few days. I don’t love the knit stitch Portuguese style😳I prefer the purl😍I think I might go back and restart the the short rows. This has all been a good learning experience, thank you so much for all your help and your videos you and your videos have been gr💕💕🥰

You are most welcome. Just go back one row and stop on a purl row, so you can keep purling around. Enjoy it!
