These braids are a wonderful way to decorate a hat, a cuff of a mitten or a cuff of a sweater. I have seen also on the yoke sweaters. All are performed by purling with the yarn in front of the work, which sound perfect for the Portuguese Style of knitting! However, because we bring the yarn over or under each other according to the direction of the twist, they are not possible to be knit using ...

Thank you for the excellent video. When joining in the round by purling the two stitches together, should the beginning of the round marker be placed after (to the left of) the p2tog? I was wondering because the yarn tail is coming out to the right of the join.
@@oliverbradley4788 I appreciate your comment. I purl 2 together and place marker. I guess it’s a matter of preference. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
@@AndreaWongKnits Thank you.
Very pretty! Not sure if I'll ever use beads, but I'll keep this in mind. Still looking forward to the smock stitch video!
@@kj3d812 the smocking video is being edited. It’s coming soon. Not everyone likes the beads, but I have so many! It will be on another project though. ☺️
Nice! I like how you add the beads. I don’t want to thread them all on when I start.
@@EvieO1950 yes, it makes it easier and it doesn’t damage my cashmere fiber this way. 😊
That is such a beautiful shawl, and being garter stitch, it is easily done. The beads add so much to the edge.
@@cindyfrye3026 Thank you, I agree.
I only thought of the beads when making the first video😟😟
Andrea, I've actually done Latvian braids on the non-public side, too. I tried it when I was working on a hat using Portuguese knitting on the non-public side. I started my hat with ribbing and with my yarns on my pins as usual, then when I got to the Latvian braid, I did my set up row alternating colors and doing purls, not knits. Then I dropped the yarn off my pins and instead of having the yarn in front and doing knits, I had my yarn in the back and did purls. The public side turned out exactly the same as if I had done it on that side. When I finished the two rows of the Latvian braid, I put my yarns back on my pins and continued my hat on the non-public side, Portuguese style. Either way is great and they are SUCH a pretty addition to patterns!! Great video. THANKS!!!
Wow! Thank you for letting me know! Then the braids are pointing the same direction as if done on the public side, right? I never tried. However, you still have to take yarns from pins to make the braid. Thank you for sharing it. I will try it!
@@AndreaWongKnits I will be excited to hear how this works out for you!
@@kindergeek I will let you know. It might take a bit, as I have at least 5 projects on my needles and 3 projects in mind for my website☺️

Pretty stitch, but for myself, I'll pass...😂
@@vanessajustino9222 that’s absolutely fine!
Andrea, thank you for this video. The lace stitch is lovely. And the yarn is beautiful. I had no trouble seeing it. The lady who NICELY suggested a darker color has a valid point in that everyone’s monitors are different and some may not have as much contrast. But I’m always amazed at the people who ONLY complain when you are providing free content. 🙄 I took your class at Temptations and am so glad I did. I switch back and forth between Portuguese and English especially when knitting stockinette. I still have trouble with my yarn flowing through the pin and my hand. I find my knitting is always coming closer to my face, then I adjust it. Do you have a video to show how to keep the tension even and yarn flowing?
Dear Cheryl, I agree that my audience has a valid point and I promise to make better choices in the future. I do have a video on the Basics of Portuguese Knitting here on TH-cam and I believe is shows how to control tension. I will watch it again and get back to you.
How pretty. Thanks for sharing!😊
Most welcome! Stay tuned for part 2: decreasing and adding beads.
Looking forward to it!

Thank you for this wonderful pattern. I am knitting along from Australia. I just realised that I don't know where to decrease the two stitches when the desired widths been achieved?
Hi Annika. I will make another video to show how to add beads and how to decrease the stitches. Just give me a couple of weeks and I will release the video. Thanks for watching!
This method is fascinating!
Thank you so much!

Yes, Norma. I was just replying to Annika that I am continuing the video with adding beads and decreasing stitches. Just give me a couple of weeks, please. Thank you for watching!
I wish I grew up knitting Portuguese. I'm 73, are stuck in English knitting for 68 years. Thank you for the video
Well, you have made your choice long time ago. I believe you had a good reason. Enjoy your knitting!
I too am an English knitter for 60+ yrs now. I’ve always been a slow knitter and could not retrain my hands to Continental. I took Andrea’s class about 10 yrs ago in Dublin, Ohio. I found that Portuguese knitting was relatively easy to crossover to and learn. It make stockinette stitching go faster for me.

This is amazing. Also - purling using the thumb? Game changer! Thank you so much for this x
That’s what Portuguese Knitting is all about!
I'm sure you can.
Yes!
My mother taught me knitting when i was a child. I think i was 7 or so. My mother was always knitting portugiese style, so i learned it that way. In earlier times purling was easier to me, so i dis my raglan sweater inside out. Its logical and prett cool. Now i have my own style of the knit stitch, and now the stickinette is much wasier. I still struggle with the tension in times, but its getting better. I get loose stitches and i dont know why
Wow! Thank you for sharing it. I am wondering how you knit now. You will improve tension with practice!
@@AndreaWongKnits my mother showed me to throw the yarn with the thimb to behind and then again with the thumb to yarn over. Now i do it with my index finger. Its mich less movement in the knitting process and its faster for me
Can you knit the stitches instead of purl and get the same result?
You’ve got it. Yes, you can turn every purl stitch into knit stitch!
Do you have a pattern for the item you are knitting? That would make a lovely skinny scarf. I don’t care for the Sophie scarf that is all over TH-cam. This would be SO much prettier. I’ll keep an eye out on you channel. I just found your channel. Thank you ♥️

What I show is the pattern. When you reach the desired width, then you start decreasing two stitches every 4th row. Can you do that?

Fascinating, never seen that before❤
Isn’t it, Maureen! And people have been knitting like this for centuries! You can find the needle in my Etsy shop if you want to give this a try. Thank you for your comment!
Beautiful lace! It's a mystery, though, why so many knitters here on TH-cam choose yarn that matches the background (table). It makes it really hard to see what's going on.
Thank you for your input. I will be more aware of my colors in the future.😊
You are absolutely right. Why do these people not watch their own videos before posting. Another annoying thing is when they use variegated yarn when showing a pattern. Oh really!!!!
@@virginiadutoit3577 hi Virginia, I do watch my own videos before I posted. To me there was enough contrast to see what I was doing, but I will look for even more contrast next time.
I purl into that first slip-knot stitch and then insert the right-hand needle between the two stitches from back to front, allowing me to create the next stitch as if I were purling.
Nice! I will do that. Thank you for sharing it!
New knitter and this video was extremely helpful! Thank you!
I am so glad it was helpful. When we start knitting we have so many questions, so please send your questions to me. 😇
Andrea, Can you show how to eliminate a jog when doing a fair isle type of pattern on the non-public side? I am doing a hat with a charted pattern and the first or last stitch sometimes are the same color, sometimes different colors, sometimes a new color. Is it even possible to use your jogless technique in some way?
Yes, it is possible unless the colors and patterns change every few rows. Try to use what I show. It gets harder if you don’t have plain rounds in between color change
Yes that’s exactly the problem. Your easy technique works with some sections of my complicated projects and not with others. I will persevere!
Hi Andrea, thank you for this extremely clear tutorial on Portuguese knitting. The purl style is going to be a game changer for me! Just shared this with my knitting bestie, and we are both very excited. Best wishes to you from Australia 😁🧶😁🧶😁
Most welcome! I hope to visit your country one day!!!
Thank you

Thank you for all the great lessons you do on Portuguese knitting. This one is really clear. I usually knit English style - flicking, but was getting some pain in my hands and fingers, but not with Portuguese style. Really helpful to see techniques like this one so I can add to my skill set with this style.
This is exactly what I needed. I tried applying traditional knitting techniques for working stripes, but they didn't work for portuguese knitting on the purl side. Thank you so much for this video.
Great!!! So glad it will be of use to you!
Que maravilha! Nunca tinha visto esta técnica, nem noutros estilos de tricotar. Tão simples e eficaz. Obrigadaaaaaa!
Que bom que você gostou!
Are you losing a stitch when you slsk?
No, because I work the first stitch with double yarn and that is like increasing one stitch at the beginning. Remember: I had a loop o. Green and one in purple

Almost like a visit with you.
Yes, something we should do soon!
Beautiful stitch!! Thank you for the tutorial.
I love this stitch as well!
Thank you!!
You are welcome! 😊
I've always struggled with uneven stitches due to poor tension. I was taught the throwing method. Continental knitting helped. The Portuguese style of knitting though has been a huge game change for me, especially for my ribbing. With ribbing before the second knit stitch left leg was distorted, I tried knitting the first purl stitch a little tighter to close any gap and generally knitting tighter. It was so exhausting. My purl row was always a bit loose. When shifting or sliding stitches tension was lost and every now and then along a row there was the odd large stitch or two. Now my 2x2 rib is cleaner, neater and I can feel proud of it, hence for the first time I'm knitting with confidence. My advice is try different knitting styles until you find the one that suits you. Thank you for these tutorials.
I agree Avril! Thank you so much for your comment! Trying different styles is key as we are all very unique people. So glad Portuguese was helpful to you!☺️☺️☺️😉
Thank you so much for this video! I am just learning to knit and I have watched some very good and clear instructions but it was either continental or english style. Right away the continental style was preferred over english but I was having such difficulty with tension and my index finger was starting to feel sore and it just felt a bit strange. Then I saw a video demonstrating this Portuguese style and was intrigued. I have found your video to be the most clear and straight forward and this style actually feels natural to me even though I’m just learning. I am looking forward to going through your other videos.
Thank you so much! I am glad I could clearly show you the basics. Yes, I will have more videos coming and if you have any suggestions or questions, please let me know.
The different knitting styles are really interesting. I love these kind of knitting videos getting to know the different styles. I have been knitting for over 60 years and I'd rather stick to the continental way though. To me the Portuguese way looks just as awkward as the English "throw over" method.
That's totally fine. You are open minded to check other styles and at least learn something about them. If Continental works for you, that's wonderful! Keep knitting! Andrea
I love you!! You are awesome! Ty ty ty
You are so welcome! Thank you so much and I am glad this was helpful!
I bet this will help me do 1-to-1 ribbing more smoothly. Thank you.
You bet! A lot of knitters get yarn over between stitches because they don't position the yarn at the right place before making the stitches...
Yes!
Never seen this before😮 I've been here on Earth for a while🤣🤣🤣🤣
