    Really like the value and options with the Supro. As DLew said below, you can find great deals like 48-month interest free pricing at GC. But no deals for Fender right now, just cash on the barrel head. So, the classic Fender tone comes at a premium price which makes me a bigger Supro fan.

    I have the Supro Blues King 12 (predecessor) and love it - LOVE it. My main ride is a Blues Deluxe, which can be sorta loud. The Supro has character and tone for miles, and is a very handy pedal platform as well.

    Hey Jack, nice take on these two amps. Agree they certainly are different and both have their virtues. having both amps myself completely agree the Supro can be dialed in to those 60-70's tones we all know from great albums of the era. Overall I prefer the Supro, so much decided to sell the Blues Jr. Main reason for keeping both was still love the Fender reverb (is better than the Supro reverb IMO), however picked up a Fender TremVerb pedal and now using that with the Supro am more than satisfied (with more reverb options plus tremolo options). Supro went a different way with the tubes using a 6L6 for the power tube vs the Fenders EL84 combo which changes the entire characteristic of the amp. As far as price-point goes, once in a while can find the Supro on sale for a deal (right now believe Guitar Center has them for a bit over $500 new). Very well done video.
    Nice as well is the smaller two versions of the Supro, the DK8 (1W) & DK10(5W) options. For players who need something a bit smaller to play with at home etc. Also picked up the DK8 just after Christmas (Boxing week sale), figured it could be great for recording and practicing. Bonus..., turn the volume (pre-amp) up all the way and master down, use the line out going into a larger amp (even the DK12 works well, but if bigger use it) and you have a fantastic real Tube Distortion. Sounds fantastic going into a Marshal or Boogie, breaking them up very well without having your eardrums bleed. Should check one out sometime. Cheers! Keep up the good work!

    My short, but late, take. The BJr has its recognizable prominent upper-mid sound that lends itself to being heard with a band. The Supro sounds a bit more chimey and nice but likely would cut though less in a live setting. That high end chime doesn’t sound as good with more gain, sounds scratchy. The Fender has a nicer rumbling growl with more gain, less fizz. I like the Fender if I needed a live amp.

  • @sjazzp

    Very good comparison, just the kind of video I was looking for. I found that the Supro sounded better especially in the clean tones that interest more to me. After so many years where the Blues Jr was the way to go, it seems there is a new king in town.The only thing is that your conclusion confused me a bit, but I reckon it won’t change my mind. On my way to a shop to try one on the flesh. Cheers!

    My main amp at church is the Hot Rod Deluxe. One of the power tubes crapped out this week. Now I have one tube that’s still good. I could use that tube in the Supro when needed.

    I had a handsome little tweed blues junior for a very short time. One of the knobs wasn't lined up with the numbers printed on the panel. I loosened up the set screw on the knob to line it up. When I removed the knob, I saw that the potentiometers don't have a washer and nut securing it to the panel. The pots are just soldered onto the PC board and just stick through the panel. I sold the amp soon after.

My 1st Supro is the 15watt Saturn (LOVE IT!), then I got a Statesman combo (wow, incredibly huge 50watts, Comet & Thunderbolt preamp sections, or blend both). Thanks for posting this. I've been playing off and on for about 20 years now and although I bought a 1999 Fender American Standard Telecaster new in 99, I've never owned an amp. I've either just played it without, or,. more often than not, played the acoustic. With that being said, I'm turning 50 this year and my family wants to get me something "special," and I've decided on a tube amp so I can start playing the Fender more. I'm not a pro by any stretch of the imagination; I know a few cords and a few licks, that's about it. I've never been in a band, etc. I like blues and classic rock (60s and 70s) and would probably play more clean tones than overdriven tones. It seems like with these 2, it's a coin flip for me.

    Great video, Jack. I've pt layed the Blues Jr. and have been looking for a Delta King 12 to try out, but this gives me a good comparison for starters. Seems like the Supro sounds more 'alive' and the Fender seemed a bit restricted. It had the bass turned to 9 and the Supro still seemed to have a better, smooth low end. This was especially noticeable with the SG. Of course I'm listening on my laptop, but the DK seems to have won this shootout and has moved up to the pole position (talk about mixed metaphors). Thanks.

Im leaning more towards the Junior even though I think the Origin is the better buy.

    • @deanmlshredder
      @deanmlshredder 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@martinmcfly2770 The origin is $100 cheaper and has an effects loop but I did feel like the Jr. took pedals better as long as you get most of your volume from the master and add preamp to taste. Too much pre gain and your delays and reverbs get a bit gnarly and you'll want a good low gain o.d. for your cleans or they'll be thin and spikey. The origin is $100 cheaper and has an effects loop but a 20w tube amp is a lot if you need to be quiet and the 5 watt version is HORRENDOUS. Put an effects loop in the Jr. and it's the cat's ass.

    • @martinmcfly2770
      @martinmcfly2770 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deanmlshredder well I think I like how the Jr. breaks up better. I hate using those words but it sounds “looser” while the Marshall sounds more compressed. To me the sound that the guitarist from Greta Van Fleet had on their last record is what I want, however he used Marshalls and something called Selmer. So I dont know if I would be able to get that sound with the jr.

    • @deanmlshredder
      @deanmlshredder 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martinmcfly2770 the "Marshall" in a box pedals out there are REALLY damn good. But the jr. On the edge of breakup is a great sound too. In my apartment I like the vol around 8 and the master around 2. Still pretty damn loud. Put an angry Charlie out front though with the amp set basically the other way around and set the pedal for "edge of breakup" and you'll have pretty much the sound you're after. The wampler plexi drive is another good one but has a lot of headroom and can get pretty loud before I get what I want out of it without it feeling compressed..

    Does anyone know if I can run a JJ 6V6 in the 6L6 Octal socket? Supposedly the JJ 6V6 can handle higher voltages than other 6V6's and just might survive in a Supro 1822 Delta King 12. I know I can run 5881 which is said to have a sweeter mid than 6L6, so I'll try that as well.

    Hard to see where Supro controls are set. Does it require a master volume to be cranked to sound good? P. S. Overall Supro seems to be more interesting and looks cooler, however it is almost too sharp with the drive. Interesting how close the tone can be dialed by tweaking.

    A stock Blues Junior IV goes for around $990AUD here in Sydney. The Supro amps are quite expensive. I have seen the Delta King for anything between $1600AUD to $1800AUD.
    Do i think that the Supro sounded better overall? Yes, although with the Tree of Life in front, they both sounded pretty darn good - comparable in quality of tone if different in tone per se.
    Do i think that the Supro is worth it? Maybe. I am happy with the Tweed Junior iii with the Jensen speaker that I've been using on and off for 5 years.

    Nice amps like em both. Would like to hear fender playing rythem and Supro playing lead.
    Fender sounds great the Supro sounds like it would kinda match but exceed as lead.
    Love em both but for now I'll be sticking with my stage right 15 watt good price works good and has an effectts loop all for under 300 dollars. Course I had to try different speakers

    I think of it like this... We all know what it sounds like when you stand outside of a club and hear the guitar playing from beyond walls and doors. That's the fender blues Jr... THEN you walk into the club, you smell the musty air, the booze, a little reefer, your eyes adjust to the light of the stage and now you're in front of the amp, the way it was meant to be heard. THAT'S the Supro.
    The fender is hiding from you, from behind walls of muffling... and the doors are locked.

    Been frustrated for years by my inability to get any "sweetness" out of my Blues Jr. Feels like the Supro is a possible answer. The BJr just always seems muddy no matter what I do to it. Yep, it sounds big, but just not as "round" and "defined", in both the clean and gritty tones, as what I'm hearing from that Supro. In every comparison here, I liked the Supro much better. Thanks, Jack.

      Yeah but this is a youtube vid so is this what the amp will sound like in the room. I've heard blues jr vids sound amazing then I bought one and it was like you said muddy I had to return it. Recording with mics or post production can make anything sound great. I'm to skeptical to make this purchase I would like to try one in a shop 1st.

Supro got the sweet sound ...but the Fender sounds like it needs a little more dialed in ( believe you need to spend 'a lot' of playing time with a valve amp to get to know it ) but its sure sounds its got a lot more head room, which in the long run would be the better buy

      Well, that's the Leo Fender thing.... Clean head room and tons of it. That Blues Jr IV, when dialed in a bit, has such a gorgeous clean and a nasty-good crunchy break up. Sounds great with the mid and treble cranked and the bass around 3 or 4. The key to the crunch is that master volume.

      I agree Steve. I just found a Carvin Nomad about 6 months ago and scooped it up. I’ve always had a thing for that Carvin tone. I absolutely love the tone on the clean channel. I don’t know what speaker originally came in these but the previous owner put a Patriot Celestion Commonwealth speaker in it and it sounds amazing. The drive channel on the other hand seems just fair to mediocre. I’m using a strat through it so maybe it just doesn’t like single coils. It also weighs a ton - almost more than my 72 Twin Reverb so its not very practical to lug around unless Im playing a good size gig.

    Ive really wanted to try out the Supro, I own a heavily modded Blues Jr and I wouldnt get rid of it. But id love to find another amp in this size range. I dont know why i thought the reverb in the Supro was digital, maybe it was on the BluesKing ? But knowing that it has spring reverb makes me even more interested in the Supro. Theres not much to these amps inside, I watched a video of someone repairing one of these. These also come in 3 different models. 8in, 10in and 12in speakers. Im waiting for videos of people trying different speakers in the Supro, the Blues Jr benefited from a different speaker. I know mine did, because the stock speaker (Yes i had what you called the "rare stock" blues Jr haha) was NOT a very good speaker. I do like that the Supro is a 6V6 as well, thats where your hearing the Supro sound like a lot of 60s n 70s recordings. Ive gotta get out and try one of these out :-) Thanks for the video

    I have a BJ 1. It is the worst tube amp I have ever had. Took it to a basement jam. With the master at 9 and volume at 3:; roasted a resistor on the board. Plus it just did not sound that good. This was with a Jensen C12N speaker. I used the carcass for a 5E3 build that is incredible. I have heard the later ones are better but I will never touch one again. That aside, my Dr Z Maz 18 is now my go-to amp.

    Just my opinion, but I thought the Fender had less punch but also way less inherent distortion of volumes where the same all around.

    Both very nice but for my money it’s the Fender.

    I thought the glassy clean of the Supro in the beginning, but when you went gritty, I vastly preferred the Fender... and I mean not even close: the Fender was meatier, fatter, girthier, however you want to put it. I'll buck the trend here and say, based solely on these samples, I'd grab the Fender.

    I've heard that Fender will cut corners on their amps because they know people will buy the amps no matter what because they say fender on them. So people say that they'll buy a Fender amp understanding that they're going to have to swap out certain resistors and things just because Fender puts a lot of near junk in their stuff. I'm guessing that supro doesn't do that? So that might be another advantage to supro. I just thought the supro sounded better.

      From what I understand the diff between the two (other than obvious looks), is a speaker change and they dropped the the effects loop from the Blues King. The Delta King has a line out only.

    • @cbaten2
      @cbaten2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dlewtweentorla1210 No they didn't. The manual explains that the power amp input disconnects from the pre amp output when you insert a connector in the power amp input. This menas that you can use it as a serial effects loop (as manual specifically states).
      Also this means that you cannot insert your phone audio straight into the power amp to jam along. As this deconnects the pre amp signal, no guitar signal comes through. A solution for the latter is to insert something in the effects loop and mix in your audio source and pre amp signal in that device (e.g. HX Stomp).
