  • Dim Sum 101: it's easy and it's fun! We recommend wu gok (deep fried taro dumpling), har gow (shrimp dumplings), siu mai (shrimp and pork dumplings), and cha siu bao (pork buns). For the adventurous, feng zhao (chicken feet or phoenix claws)! Let's go yum cha! (Let's go drink tea). More here: gothamist.com/2016/12/08/dim_s...

    One other tip would be to try to sit near the kitchen if it is a cart-style restaurant, because a lot of the most popular dishes will get snapped up, plus they will be hotter. Also my family likes to order one a la carte plate of green veggies usually with garlic and soy sauce or oyster sauce, to offset the mostly meaty or fried traditional dim sum fare. Drink lots of tea too to help with digestion. One fun thing within Chinese families is to sneakily pay the cheque at the end before anyone notices. "I'm just going to the bathroom" while you grab the stamped card. Otherwise a tug of war and a playful shouting match to compete to pay might ensue. Points scored for the young person who manages this over grandma, just saying. Final tip - go with a number of people so that you can enjoy a lot of things. This is a communal treat!

    This brought a tear to my eye, I remember my first spouse taking me to a famous restaurant in Guangdong Guangzhou to have dim sum and all the other delicacies shown in this clip during a longer layover we had at Baiyun Int. Airport. We almost missed our connection flight as the restaurant was way farther than we had thought, but it was all worth it. Those were the days...

    Dim sum when eaten with others must be shared. It’s very weird to only order for oneself at a Chinese restaurant. We don’t eat like that.

    I remember when I was 5-6 I went to a dim sum place where I lived (LA) I remember my dad ordering a lot of salted rice porridge (I don’t know what it’s called but my grandma cooks it sometimes) because I liked it so much

      That was probably "Congee" or in Cantonese (since Dim Sum is a traditional Cantonese cuisine) "Jook" could be used as well.
      My Chinese grandmother would often cook that for me as well. My Chinese mother does the same at times. It's a wonderful dish and is very great to have on a chilly day during winter or if you are trying to get better from a cold.

    First time I had dim sum in HK and I was blown away... also I shared a table with 5 people who spoke no english but one old man told me to watch out for the 'hot water' for cleaning the dish? He said not for food clean. Since then I've longed for that taste again my favorite egg buns that are tasty!

      @@CasianaCarmazan You can't have a "real" dim sum meal at home. Dim sum requires special skills and there are too many dishes to make with one person. If you are trying to make Chinese food at home, stick with the actual dinner dishes, such as lobster or congee.

      No he is just wrong. And you are supposed to share--it is weird and rude to order for yourself unless you are dining alone. In dim sum, you can eat as much or as little as you want. Normally when my family goes we order so much that we have multiple boxes of leftover to bring home.

    1:43 he mentioned the reason why you would want to drink a lot of tea is to - get the oil down your system " AKA GREASE" Asian food is full of it. I 'm sorry ...but later he mentioned it's healthy?

    • @carradee
      @carradee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      "Oil" ≠ "grease". "Grease", in reference to cooking, specifically refers to oils that are soft solids at room temperature. The common ones are unhealthy and/or poor quality.
      Oils can be perfectly healthy, depending on the oil, how it's used, and what temperatures it's exposed to. But oils can be rough on the digestion, triggering bile processing issues if you have them, which is why it's helpful to have digestive aid with them.
