  • Though dim sum has its roots in ancient China, the meal has become an inextricable part of life in NYC. In order to help Sean Evans navigate the cuisine's unique customs and courtesies, Strictly Dumpling's Mike Chen decided to set up a crash-course at Nom Wah Tea Parlor, the oldest dim sum shop in Chinatown. From proper tea etiquette to strategy for attacking a plate of chicken feet, TH-cam's globetrotting gourmand breaks down the dim sum dos and dont's for dumpling fanatics everywhere.

As a Westerner, my first Dim Sum experience was a total freak-out. No menus. No prices. Nobody spoke English. I didn't know what 90% of the items were. The staff kept stamping our "card" with chinese characters. I spent the whole time dreading that the characters meant "$50", "$100"... Lol. But, everything was great and the meal was way cheaper than I expected. I kind of relaxed after that.

As a person who grew up on a farm where almost every bit of the animal was used. I have never understood why people are grossed out by eating brains, feet, or faces of animals. How much more different are they than eating a rib cage or ass cheek?
Something had to die to provide you with nutrition so be thankful and let nothing go to waste.
One of my most favorite dishes ever, were pickled pigs feet. My step grandmother was very German. She used a recipes passed down from her grand mother for them. I only had them twice. Once at 6 and once at 11 and that was some of the best pork I have ever had.
I think with our modern American mentality we get grossed out by seeing the limbs, however that is a contradiction....... because what meat eater doesn't enjoy chewing the meat off of a rib cage?
Step out of your comfort zone people, and give thanks to the animals who die for us. Utilize every part of them, or just be a vegan.

Jeff Turner Nice speech. As a Chinese I think the same. Chinese were suffered in poverty so we cherished every piece of an ingredient.. our ancestors found their own ways to cook those special things. That’s the experience most of the westerns never had. And those ways are preserved till today. The way I was educated in China is that if u don’t like the type of food don’t eat it. But don’t judge others who do. That’s the basic polite for us, and yet a lotta western people don’t feel like it.

Jeff Turner in Trinidad we also eat pickled pigs feet and chicken feet. It’s called souse. We also eat oxtails and cow heels. There’s so much collagen and nutrition in these parts of the animal, why waste it!

Respect for teaching the audience about the chinese tea culture and etiquette instead of just having Sean go in and chow down chicken feet and record his response. Yum cha is a cuisine specifically based around socializing while drinking hot tea, so it's got a different context to it than just chowing down food. It's nice to see they care about the context.

so the tapping of the fingers I heard comes from the times of an emperor who wanted to see first hand how his people lived. He took his trusted servant and swapped clothes and headed out. Since the servant is playing the emperor and the emperor is playing the servant, when the servant (emperor) poured tea into the cup of the emperor(servant) to show respect to the emperor (which usually is bowing when a king or emperor gives you something) he simulated bowing by putting his 2 fingers together and tapping the table, just so they can maintain their cover....thus the tradition continues till today that when someone pours you tea, you tap with your fingers. - cool story bro.

I believe the finger tapping comes from when my boy Emperor Qianlong was undercover, and poured one of his vassals some tea, so because this servant couldn't bow to Qianlong and touch his head to the ground, he tapped two fingers on the table to signify the bow without blowing the Emperor's cover.

Please a longer vid with both. Great collab. I watch both of their channels and I can see there being chemistry with food involved. Crazy seeing two ppl together that you watch for different reasons. I don't even categorize their videos as similar even if both involve food their cultural styles and content are way different but great!!

confirm what? him calling Mike the C word(which is obviously racist)? Any normal person can tell he's not Jackie Chan, people who have to observe again and again has problem with their eyes, or they're just dumb and ignorant, or just being racist. just check his other comments, he's insulting Asian people from all aspects, mocking how Asian people look. That's so stupid and disgusting.
