    Wife just got a 2021 and windshield did the same thing in 2 weeks! It was setting still in our car port when it happen!? Crazy. Car is cool but windshield is junk. It’s $1k if you have eyesight system. Honestly to me, though I love our dealership, it’s the service manger being difficult about it. Now a update... two weeks later we were able to get a $500 coupon from Subaru! Our dealership is a nice family owned business, so we never had issue with them. My wife called and wrote Subaru about what groin, then they surprised us with it! That was great, just hope it never happens again! It was literally setting still in the drive in a car port when it busted. I feel better about the car but they should offer replacement to everyone who buys that car.

      Ugh, I feel your wife's pain...I got a 2021 Crosstrek and within two weeks, it can't withstand a rock?? My previous car was a Lexus over 10 years with so many rocks hitting and I never had a problem with it being cracked.

      @@MrDarthvis well, oddly we had a good thing happen out of it. My wife wrote Subaru explaining what happen... because it was setting still in the drive and busted. Honestly it was the service manager being a jerk about the whole thing, anyway... so along with the dealership helping us, we got a $500 coupon form Subaru to help us cover it! I am shocked!

    Subaru must be very proud of the pieces of art they are selling now. I've been a Subaru owner for more than 15 years, still proud owner of a 2008 legacy (several chips on the windshield, but no cracked). The last Subaru we bought was a 2020 Legacy, and this is the 2nd time the windshield cracked. I don't think we're going to spend another $1000 for replacement, waiting for Subaru to take charge in this matter that sucks!

    Great video. Unfortunately I discovered this when I'm going to be onto my 3rd windshield on my 2016 outback. We contacted the dealership when we got the first crack, almost 2 months after we drove it off the lot, they mentioned NOTHING of this extension. Now I have an OEM replacement part which is no longer part of the warranty extension and it too has the same crack in the same area in the ceramic heat area. Thanks for posting!

    What a shame for Subaru to have such kind of problem. I planned to buy one, but I am now hesitant. Since many models are with the same problem, I don't know why Subaru doesn't wanna solve it.

      So far, Subaru replaced the battery and ENGINE!!!!! Would have also replaced the windshield if I had known about the recall. And I also had a bunch (4?) of service bulletin fixes done. Luckily it was all under warranty.

    My 2015 OB without Eyesight has been through many windshields and honestly I am seeing these cracks within weeks of fresh installs with OEM glass. Discouraging. I hope the police don't ticket me because right now there's a crack right across my field of vision. Getting tired of $500 a year just for this

    I don't have an Outback but a 2021 Crosstrek. Less than a month I already got a fucking cracked windshield! Of course warranty doesn't cover road hazards but I've owned Toyota before and had countless rocks hitting the windshield and it was still fine! SOA only covers manufacturer defects, but I would say their quality of the windshield IS their problem to fix.
    I've yet to hear from SOA specialist but my outcome might be like yours too sadly. Sorry to hear about your predicament. Since it's around four years later, how's your update on the car?

    • @chicagohandyman
      @chicagohandyman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aftermarket windshield is doing great. Like you said, it’s 4 years later... so the outback is 7 years old with over 115k miles, many dents from parking lot garage parking in the city, body work repair failure (blistering paint), so about now we don’t really care about the cosmetics. About to give it to our son who will be a new licensed driver. At this point, if it gives us another 100k, I’ll be happy with it. But I know how you feel with your crosstrek being brand new and what happened to your windshield. Maybe if there is a defect with those run of windshields, soa will recall them in the future. My tundra windshield got a spider web crack from a small rock that hit me on the highway. It looked like such a tiny rock. But I guess it just happens.

    I have the same problem with 2015 Subaru Outback. Replaced with an aftermarket windshield shaded, wipers heated for $230. At the windshield bottom at the driver’s side is marked:
    PGW, TINT, LAMINATED, DOT 563 AS1 M848, E1 43 R-001853.
    DOT563 means SHENZHEN AUTOMOTIVE GLASS MANUFACTURING
    PPG / PGW / XYG are all the Same poor quality Chinese made glass.
    Now I have 2 problems. First windshield would crack as soon as the windshield defrost would be turned on (I never would do it). If you own Subaru please forget windshield defrost.
    Second this SHENZHEN AUTOMOTIVE GLASS is prone of cracking during driving, if a small chip touch it or even nothing touches it. I know it won’t last for long. So next time I would by a Subaru OEM, used in good condition windshield. I am going to clean it with razor blade to the glass, and prime with Urethane Windshield Primers. With a helper, using a wire, would cut off, and remove the cracked windshield. Trim the urethane glue living 1 mm to 2 mm avoiding going to the metal. Using 3M Window-Weld Super Fast Urethane, Black, TS 08693, Tensile: 1200 PSI Elongation: 750% Hardness (Shore A): 50-55 Cure Through: 24 Hours @ 50%RH, 75°F, would mount the new windshield. Please note that bonding is not recommended below 40°F. At 60°F it takes 24 hours to harden up to 250 PSI Elongation, which is 21 % of final strength.
    We supported windshield from underneath with pieces of wood for 48 Hours. After, mounted the Windshield Wiper Cowl Vent Panel, and wipers, but keeps the tapes for 72 hours. If driving the car, with uncured Urethane adhesive, the windshield slips down, creates cracks at uncured Urethane Adhesive, water penetrates, a would leak. So:
    Windshield have to be removed, all urethane has to be removed up to metal. The rust has to be sanded, and primed with auto body primer, and after 48 hours have to be primed with Windshield Urethane Primer. After repeat the installing procedure.
    I was doing it many times and unfortunately I have to do it again.

    The moral of the story is stop trying to go cheap with an aftermarket that doesn’t even have OEM heating in the proper place and call Subaru or the insurance company to have it fixed properly

    • @chicagohandyman
      @chicagohandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The 2015+ Outbacks came with defective windshields and the dealership didn’t know it was covered under warranty when I called them after mine cracked. It was only then I started shopping around for aftermarket glass. I think the actual real moral is to be informed and never trust the dealership.

      Tundra, Tools, and Tech I watched the video in its entirety. Don’t assume because I pointed out a mistake on your part that I’m not intelligent enough to have watched the video. I have a 2018 outback that a rock just cracked my windshield last month. The point of your video is in fact you went with a cheaper install to save money; however, when you go the cheap route you get cheap quality. As evidenced by your admission and video evidence that the shot scratch your paint on the top left corner at the top of the new windshield. The windshield wasn’t OEM aaa evidences by your own admission with your own voice in the video. Then at the end you discussed how you are irritated/aggravated/pissed because now Subaru won’t cover the defect of the 2015 windshield that clearly cracked due to defect and not a rock like mine did. However, you did not mention in the video that you went to the dealership to have your VIN checked for recalls or defects before deciding on your own to have it replaced at a second hand shit show shop. The bottom line here is my first comment stands accurate as I did watch your video in its entirety only to learn that you’re pissed they won’t cover it now that the original windshield is gone. Why would they cover it? Why would you be pissed? You jumped the gun by not have the Subaru dealer check the VIN for defects or recalls. That’s not Subaru’s job to call every Subaru owner daily to say oh hey we just wanted to chat because we have unlimited time in our day to ask about your windshield! If however, you did go to Subaru and have the VIN checked and they did not tell you it was defective then you should have a quote sheet from them for the cost of repair if you chose them. Then you would take that to Subaru of America and fight to have them replace your shit shop windshield because they then are to blame for not catching the recall/defective part. But that’s not what you said in the video hence my first comment. Don’t assume someone did not watch your video, or is too dumb to understand what you said in the video if they did watch it. The fact remains you got a shit show windshield to save $450 because mine was $728 to replace at Subaru. Yours was $220. But mine is the correct windshield with the correct elements on it. If mine was a 2002 then it’s old enough not to care what windshield you get. But yours is only 3 years old, it’s worth the $450-$500 for the right shit done right at the Subaru shop.

      Hi Nate, so that you know, most of the "cheap" replacement glass is manufactured by the same people, many times at same factory. Most important part , needs to have DOT number on the glass. Yes, there are so really cheap glass out there, but just because it's aftermarket doesn't mean bad.

      @@tonyduarte1832 I agreed, I replaced my 2008 Honda Pilot for $210 close to 3yrs now. They look great and sealed like or better than OEM compared to the original 11yrs old windshield. Today we discovered our 2016 Legacy with Eyesight has a long 13" crack in the middle of the glass driver pillar toward the passenger side. Called SOA eventually it wasn't part of the 5yrs extension warranty. SOA willing to work on some sort of financial assistance to get this done after I bring it in for inspection and further look at the cause.

    You don't have Eyesight? Because that crack looks exactly like mine except mine is on the passenger side. It goes up and hooks toward the center. I have Eyesight on my '18 Forester. The dealer's service garage said that replacement should be done by Subaru because the Eyesight system has to be recalibrated for the new glass, which is OEM -- for the Eyesight. Estimated cost is $1200. State Farm *might* pay for it depending on an agreement between the parties. I don't want another Subaru.
