Little Shop of Horrors - Dentist Scene - w/ Bill Murray

  • My favorite scene. I love you, Bill Murray.
    Because I want to reply to MANY comments with this, I'm just gonna say it here: When I was a kid and watched this movie my kid mind thought that Bill's character was "pretending" to like being at the dentist because he was actually afraid/had a fear of being at the dentist...and acting that way was his way of coping...

      Well, your comment is from over four years ago, but I just saw it. Hopefully I am not too late to ask: Will you marry me? I promise to always be a burden, accomplish nothing and be completely boring in bed. Clearly, we are soul-mates and if there is any kind of silly impediment to our love (you know- like being married, having kids or you just don't swing my way...) well, that is where my pet (alien carnivorous plant-like critter) comes in. With luck, there won't be anything left that we have to clean up. I do however, wish my not-so-little Audrey lll would learn to chew with its mouth closed.

    • @lianasoares8052
      @lianasoares8052 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I looked it up: Sadistic means deriving my pleasure from inflicting pain, suffering, or humiliation on others. So the joke would be "hurt me, hurt me" & the sadistic person would say "ok."

    I like how we get introduced to an extremely sadistic dentist who thrives on causing pain to others, then the movie throws us a curveball by having him meet his equal, an extremely masochistic patient. Sheer brilliance.

      This is basically the scene that stood out to me as a kid for that reason. A very long time ago this was on and I was half paying attention, but there was always something about that guy who actually ENJOYED the awful pain (and how it frustrated the mean dentist) that stood out to me. I missed the sexual undertones as a kid, but I just remember how the sadistic dentist was basically "foiled" by this crazy guy who loved the pain lol

    • @erictaylor1770
      @erictaylor1770 6 ปีที่แล้ว +90

      dlancer2k Have you ever read the fangoria magazine about this scene? It wasn't written as a "sadist" versus a "masochist"! It was intended to introduce "audiences" to "cheezy improvisation comedy"... It was to introduce audiences to a new wave of Comedy! Cheezy comedy. Which is so very common today! But back then people really didn't get it! So rather than do a whole movie with actors acting like this! This was the introduction to "cheesy sketch comedy" "improvisation era"! The "sadist" versus the "masochist"! Is a big "fallacy" that the mainstream audience" Has spread with this sequence due to a misinterpretation!

      Eric Taylor
      actually, the same scene with a masochist was in the original movie from 1960 (the meaning was made _very_ clear), so I'm not sure what you mean. it could be what the magazine said as well, but it's 100% _was_ written as "sadist vs masochist".

      Unstoppable force meets immovable object. Clearly Bill won this round. You don't often see Masochism beat Sadism, but when you do, it's a pleasure. A slow, long, painful, excruciating pleasure! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Candybar! Candybar, candybar!

      A Sadist + a masochist, normally I think one would expect BOTH to be turned on in that encounter. NOT these two, only the masochist is turned on clearly. :P But I understand the Dentist's perspective more than the other one. Someone who can't feel pain at all, (even when it's on purpose), or doesn't show signs of feeling pain EVER, (and doesn't shut up either), would be annoying for ANYONE to deal with, or they may not be wholly human.

      Same. Its amazing how much illuminati mind control we endured in the 1980s that our parents were clueless about before the ratings system. I would watch the dentist scenes over & over as a little kid cuz they made me tingly and meanwhile had no idea my brain was being rewired to seek and approve of these behaviors. After the ratings system it all moved to The Internet to confuse parents again. Now its on smart phones.

I wish I had that stamina cuz I can only go so long that's how I want to be I don't ever want to have to be just. yes doctor. pretty broad generalizations with little grounding. Many sadists very much enjoy the masochist getting off on it... And masochists aren't usually immune to pain in general: torture still hurts. Also, sadism is not the same as degredation. Masochists aren't always into put-downs, it depends. The masochist is actually quite the freak compared to the dentist. The dentist is a typical sadistic sociopath... the masochist is able to take pain that most simply cannot, and enjoy the entire experience (and also enjoy degredation)

    I find it hilarious that, as bad as a sadist is, he finds a masochist a "goddammit sicko" 😆

    Love Bill putting on the light and the napkin and his protective stuff by himself. Guess he's doing Orin a favor.

      Bill is playing the same character that a young unknown at the time actor, Jack Nicholson was doing in the original movie. He also put on the napkin on himself. Just a fun fact.

      @@johncoffey6108 it's projection.
      sadists, psychopaths and extreme narcissists can't recognize their own faults and typically project that on to others.
      So next time they project a whole litany of issues, it very much likely describes what is wrong with them.
