- Here's Taran Killaml's performance of "Dentist!" during the July 1st performance of Encores! Off-Center's 2015 concert production of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's "Little Shop of Horrors." This video also features Tracy Nicole Chapman as Chiffon, Marva Hicks as Crystal, Ramona Keller as Ronnette, Jake Gyllenhaal as Seymour Krelborn, and Ellen Greene as Audrey.
This concert production was directed by Dick Scanlan, choreographed by Patricia Wilcox, and featured musical direction by Chris Fenwick.

You can tell how enthusiastic he was about this opportunity because he never once had his script! He was so excited to be in this show and prove himself as a Musical star in addition to being a comedian that he made sure he had everything memorized! Such passion; I love it!

@@celestiag.thomas-johnson7067 Encores Off-Center shows are prepped with about a week of rehearsals. So it’s standard for the actors to keep a script at their side just in case they need it, due to the lack of prep time. So, this shows that he spent a LOT of time outside of rehearsals getting comfortable enough to not need it.

I know kilim is fucking brilliant not only does he have the singing chops but also the mannerisms and same pyscho engery Steve Martin and Douglas still brought to the part
This was a really great interpretation of Orrin, he clearly was having a great time with it too. Steve Martin's still my favorite (because Steve Martin) but I like that he did something different AND well. Mama would be proud....

Martin was good but it was strange hearing everyone in NY accents and for some strange reason he played Orin with a somewhat southern accent.

Hoo boy I am _in love_ with this Orin! He's got the perfect combination of hilarious and scary. I really want Little Shop to get revived again and have Taran be Orin(and I know this was just encores but I'd hope they'd add a greaser type wig bc as amazing as Taran is he looks kind of adorable to be Orin lol)
He's missing the gay that's the issue
He is perfect for the role. He has the right energy, voice, and timing.
He owns it , I thought nobody could out do , Steve Martin , I was wrong .
All he does is copy all of Steve Martin's actions and inflections. This is a boring portrayal.

He did great! He kept everything that was a signature of this role and made it his own.

People who don't like this interpretation need to realise the stage musical has a more chilled, 1960's, "Leader of the Pack" vibe to this song. Whereas Steve Martin was really exaggerated and goofy but it's not actually supposed to be like that in the actual musical, it's kinda more slow and chilled and smooth.
The movie version is actually a little uptempo too. I actually don’t really like the movie ver.
But I don't like it because I prefer Douglas's yaknow the broadway adaptation before this one I like Steve's but I prefer Douglas I'm not saying I hate it but you have to be a certain amount of gay and not sane to be orin

He's really good, but I noticed that in all the songs for this production, it sounds like they slowed down the tempo. Not crazy about that.

He's very Biff Tannen in this version.
But he subtly shows more cruelty in this version than even Martin's. Look at the way he practically sexually assaults the girls while singing Dentist. (Perhaps playing on the sexual and maybe even racial attitudes of the early 60's that sometimes these toxic masculine white men had that women of color were theirs for the taking.)
Also the colder way he says "Somebody talking to you." He's doing the whole 'abusers don't always act abusive in public" approach. They save it for people that they think are weaker than them.

he has a gorgeous voice and his acting is incredible, but in my opinion he just doesnt really look the part. by growing his hair out and styling it to be more like that of a greaser, he would look better. although i do appreciate the fact they seemed to modernize this performance a bit more

Something's a bit off with Taran. I think he has too much of a babyface to be the dentist. Doesn't have the sadistic look that Steve Martin gave off in the movie. He's definitely one of the better dentists that's been on stage but gotta work on that laugh. No where near as wild as Douglas Sills dentist laugh.
Simon Vs The World It's different which I like. Most people just try to copy Steven Martin instead of trying something new. I also like Franc Luz's version too.
