  • Although this little shop of horrors is kind of terrifying it is also very appropriate for this channel. I think Steve Martin is a genius and here are my reactions to his famous scene where he walks into his dental office.
    If you think I should react and/or comment about any other popular shows or movies please let me know.

    The comedy behind the dentist character is that he's not just "crazy" but he's a sadist and gets off on inflicting pain which makes the future scene with Bill Murray, a masochist patient, a complete match made in S & M heaven.

      My pops took me to see this when it fist came out... I was 8 or 9, I believe? Anyhow, watching it as an adult, I see so much that went "over my head" as a kid. Watching the Bill Murray scene as an adult, I was kind of creeped-out! As a kid, I didn't understand the whole "S & M" concept, and how Orin kicked him out after realizing that he was ENJOYING the abuse and pain! It is a much darker movie/play than I ever realized!

    I know that when the movie first came out there were a few dentists who were upset that they were depicted as sadistic. I'm glad you can see the humour in Steve Martin's portrayal.

      I had a dentist once who didn't want to give me Novocaine so he only gave me a bit and he totally didn't wait for it to kick in either he just started drilling so before he even got to my tooth I started thrashing ( I was young, it was the early 90s ) and he called me a brat and kicked me out.
      I only knew that my other dentist before I had to switch insurance would wait for me to get numb and this new guy didn't so I guess naturally as a child I was like "somethings wrong" in my brain and kicked into tantrum mode.

    When I was small, a crazy dentist pulled out my rotten teeth with no anesthetic, causing me years worth of trauma and me needing to be heavily drugged. Pretty accurate

  • @judaihyuga
    @judaihyuga 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    This song....feels so accurate to how my early visits to the dentist were. I had a horrible dentist as a kid. No matter how wide I opened my mouth, it was never wide enough. He would put this thing in my mouth that I can only describe a tiny jack, which he would then use to force my mouth open to where he wanted it. This wouldn't necessarily be a problem in itself, except that he forced my mouth open to a point where it was actually painful. Like, I felt like my jaw about to dislocate painful. Between having my mouth forced open farther than it was meant to go, stabbing my gums with his hook, and any other work he had to do, I would start screaming in pain. He eventually refused to see me (which I was fine with), because I apparently made the other kids nervous. Of course, my mom never believed my side of the story, so I just got in trouble. We started going to a new dentist. One that had an N64 in waiting room, so kids could play and relax before they had to go in. I was still kinda nervous my first time in (for obvious reasons), so as I'm trying to prepare myself for the usual pain, the nurse asks me: "What movie would you like to watch?" to which I could only respond "....what?" Turns out this new place would put on a movie for the patients so they could focus on that while the dentist was busy doing his thing. I never screamed in that office even once. Everyone had a great bedside manner, they were all super friendly, and if they ever put anything in my mouth to keep it open, they made sure I was comfortable before they started. Best dentists office ever. 10/10, would recommend.

    Little Shop of Horrors is a movie from the early 1960s and is set in that time period.
    The musical version movie was made in 1986 but it is still set in the early 1960s.
    Gloves, masks, shields would be rare back then.
    By the mid 1980s dentists usually used gloves and usually masks.

    • @kathrynwirth5884
      @kathrynwirth5884 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually, not totally true. When I was 12 in the early 60s I lived in a small town and had never been to a dentist in my life before. Of course I had to have every tooth in my head filled because of poor dental hygiene and excessive candy consumption . My dentist was so angry that my parents had neglected to give me dental care that he wanted to make a point. You said that dentists put topical anesthetic on the gums to numb the effect of the needle. Not this guy! He carried the needle in front of him like a sword. and proceeded to numb me. It is so amazing that I survived that incident without hating dentists or not having great dental hygiene. I am 70 years old now and still have most of my teeth. There are whack jobs out there in every profession. Thankfully he has bee dead for decades and has not inflicted trauma on anyone in a very long time.

    @drnancysjohnson3844 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I was a little girl in the 1950s & my mom, a doctor, was friends w/ the dentist in the health care practice a large corporation provided for their employees. So of I went on most Saturday mornings to be tortured by her friend, who I later realized hated children. He wasn’t as awful as Steve Martin in Little Shop of Horrors, but close.
    But that’s only aside. I grew up to be a Ph.D. level psychologist who taught in the medical school. Later I was asked to put together an advanced seminar for the Psychiatry Residents about how to diagnose & treat people who came to see them on an outpatient basis instead as inpatients on the psychiatric unit in our hospital. As I was preparing my course curriculum & looking for materials to use as teaching aids, I encountered the most outstanding, comprehensive teaching aid I have ever seen, that illustrated not just one personality disorder but several poorly described ones in the DSMs (American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic & Statistical Manual).
    After watching a video of Little Shop of Horrors w/ my family & laughing until I cried, I had a brilliant idea that I shared w/ my girls & my husband. What did they think of my showing the video to the Residents in my new seminar that was starting soon? The 3 girls got all got excited & started calling out names of movie characters & their diagnoses. I was amazed at how right on they were.
    My husband did not get a chance to say a word but was laughing at his 9 & 11 year old daughters getting so excited about the idea of Audrey 1, the plant from outer space, being the best portrayal of a Borderline Personality Order who is so needy & selfish that they suck the life out of other people close to them . And Steve Martin was called a sadistic, narcissistic, psychopath from hell. Of course they absolutely loved him & several years later performed “The Dentist” at a Charity Event in the town where we lived.
    And when my Psychiatry Residents did their class evaluations at the end of the seminar, can you guess what all but 2 of my students wrote that watching the Video of the movie, “The Little Shop of Horrors” was the best part & they knew they’d never have trouble with making the diagnoses of those particular Personality Disorders in the future. Since a committee of faculty members had to read the class evaluations from our residents, I was suddenly inundated w/ calls from the members & other faculty members who had heard about my seminar. So I had to have a party at my house w/ food, drink, the video, & lots of fun & laughter. And, as we all should know by now, Laughter Is The Best Medicine!!!
    Thanks for showing “The Dentist” part of the movie & relating it to the reality of dentistry today. You are a delightful & insightful narrator & I’d love to have your beautiful smile. That smile is the best advertisement for your dental practice, especially when you laugh. Your genuine laugh comes from your heart & invites us to laugh w/ you!!’

    • @tarawhittington5686
      @tarawhittington5686 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The topical is to reduce the feeling of the very initial "pricking" with the needle. However if it only took 5 seconds to inject, it could be that the solution was injected a bit too quickly - it should take up to 30 seconds. You could say the dentist was in a rush or more likely they thought it's better to 'get it over with' for you, but the trouble is that the fast injection causes the solution to sort of "whoosh" into the gums. The pressure of the solution going into the gums fast without time to dissipate causes that pain.

    "He should be giving them anesthetics"
    Given that the scene takes place in the 1950s (I suppose), that sounds almost incredible to me. The dentist my parents took me to when I was a child would only ever numb me up when he had to do something "serious" ... like extracting a tooth. I guess he must've been "old school" or something, but nope... no needles for poor little me back then. And that was in the late 1970s/early 1980s.
    Needless to say that I absolutely dreaded any dentist appointment back then. I distinctly remember one occasion where I did get some Novocaine from him, he sent me back to the waiting room for the stuff to take effect and so that he could work on my mom first. When his assistant came to call me back into the practice, she freaked out because out of sheer nervousness and terror of having to get back into the chair, I had chewed open my lower lip (without realizing it, because it was numb) and was thus bleeding like a stuck pig.

    Whoa, those Chiclet teeth are upstaging you.

    There are recordings of demos for the off B’way musical with songs that were discarded from the show. One of them is My Hobby which is an early version of Dentist. Orin says that when he was a kid he & his buddies went to a graphic horror movie. He got turned on and his friends got sick. There is also a musical number sung by his punching bag girlfriend called the Worse He Treats Me.

    @Nathan Coughlin: As thegorn68 commented, below, the point is that Steve Martin's character is actually sadistic. So - you should definitely check out, and do a reaction video on, the scene a little later in the movie where Steve Martin's sadistic dentist meets up with a masochistic patient ( Bill Murray. ) It's also hilarious.

    You should comment on the range of equipment portrayed when he (Martin) is going to work on the masochists (Bill Murray) mouth. Some of those instruments look like something from the dark ages.

    Hi Dr.Nate I hope you’re doing great ! I have a question that’s been lately up on my mind which is, Orthodontists are only specialized in braces? And is whitening teeth and fixing cavities a part of an orthodontist’s job?
    I’m in 11th grade and my dream job is to become a dentist but I didn’t know what type of a dentist I wanted to exactly become. After watching your videos you inspired to become a successful orthodontist :)

      Hey Nadine. Yes, orthodontists specialize in braces but we are all dentists originally and have filled cavities/extracted teeth/whitened teeth, etc.
      Glad I could be a little inspriration😁

      @@ThriveDentist I've had it once or twice (iirc, in the form of a cotton nub coated with gel and placed between gum and cheek/lip). While it numbs the initial prick, it does nothing for the needle feeling like it's going right up your nose. At least the initial flash of pain acts as a warning for the slow sear of the needle being in?
      I've learned to dissociate during those few seconds, and after that I can focus on keeping my head still, tongue down, and mouth open. As long as I'm numb for the actual work, the injection is tolerable.

    I went into the dentist office to get a drilling and the anesthesia wasn't working but by the 4th time they tried to give me anesthesia and it still didn't work I felt bad and didn't want to have to stop again so I toughened it out. It numbed the pain to a point where it was still very painful but not so painful that I was able to keep myself from screaming.
