Hi everyone, another note from a friend: if you remove the foam gasket from the original speaker and place it on top of the gasket from your new speaker, that will give the speaker extra padding and will often improve sound even more. Also, here is a link to another speaker (ZT-105) that works well with the device, if you'd like to do a sound test of your own! s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Ddhaw4f
Good stuff man, I have all the upgrades mentioned in this video, I would also highly recommend putting a Popsocket on the battery compartment door, slightly off-center, depending on your hand size, it really was a game changer in terms of comfort; You can easily access the shoulder buttons and it feels waaay less cramped. The Miyoo Mini has been honestly everything I had hoped it would be, and more with how well development has gone on OnionOS and the community at large.
The speaker test for Sonic CD had me pumped, I remember when I first heard that and I still jam out, the stock speakers are quite nice. I still think that is the best theme for a sonic game, I mean it gave us what we wanted from Sonic just being fast!
Awesome mods, Russ! I don't have a Miyoo Mini, but is great to see how simple mods can make all the difference in enhancing a retro device! The Miyoo Mini seems like an amazing retro gaming device, though! It looks like a great gift for any retro gamer!
This device was dirt cheap over the Black Friday sales period, I brought two to give to my brothers as Christmas gifts. While I was configuring them, I fell in love with it and ended up buying a third one for myself. The UI is fantastic, the screen looks brilliant for it's price and even though it is a small device I don't find the ergonomics that bad (although most games I play don't rely on the shoulder buttons. Only thing I would want from a update is a video out and then it would be the perfect small form retro handheld.
This is my exact mini now with all the same mods! Thought Russ stole mine for a minute. I love it, as it reminds me of my old White PS1 Portable which was my first console ever as a kid.
The 3d printed grip case that also fits the better back buttons is fantastic for those of us who have a bit of trouble with the size of the device cramping hands. As a bonus, it also protects the screen in travel mode without being as unpocketable as the stock case.
Nice mods. I also think that a wrist strap is essential for this device no matter how you put it, I can't count the amount of times that it might have fall from my hands if I didn't have it on. And we all know how prone to break this screen is so I'd say it's a pretty nice mod to have.
I really appreciate this video because I was going to "upgrade" mine with new buttons as well, but watching this helped me realize it's kind of a waste of money, especially since I only paid $40 for my Mini. Thanks anyways, Russ.
yeah 100% and most of these mods look sh*t and poorly executed 🤣 should be titled how to ruin a great device and wait even longer after you receive one from etsy to get the "mods" hey look at my ps1 Gameboy 😂😂😂😂😆
The shoulder buttons I would do but then they'd not get much use as many system I play don't use L2 & R2 and I mainly use the L & R ones and I don't use the hotkeys that require me to press those buttons to begin with. I'd think it'd be a waste of time and money to bother and I don't want to change the stock buttons and pad as I feel that would be tacky as all hell.
I recently upgraded my speaker using the Sony Xperia Mini driver and I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to upgrade it. The speaker I ordered was from California so I was a bit concerned it wasn’t a Sony OEM driver. Those concerns vanished once I tested a few games with the new driver. The new driver has far better range and depth. Even my wife, who has zero interest in such things said “Wow, that’s a big difference!” when comparing a stock Mini to an upgraded one. I ordered 2 ea for $20 shipped and will likely order enough to upgrade all my Minis. I’ve been buying Minis for nearly 2 years now and I can’t recommend this upgrade enough, above all others. It’s a *significant improvement* in one’s gaming experience.
I just finished installing the Xperia speaker in mine-seems nicer, but more play will tell. One thing that was critical for me was that I had to peel the padded "screen door" soft mesh cover off of the stock speaker and stick it to the replacement before installing, because the Xperia I got was a bit smaller without it and it would sit too deeply in the case-it wouldn't make solid electrical contact without that padding.
I have both the button and trigger upgrade. The trigger upgrade to me is a no brainer and MUST buy. Makes the mini easier to hold and makes the triggers waaaaaayyy easier to press / use.
Phew! That Sony Xperia X5 speaker sounds noticeably better, especially when listening over headphones. It’s not surprising, as Sony takes sound quality on their Xperia smartphones pretty seriously. Considering that Miyoo Mini V2 can’t be found for under a hundred bucks, it’s not exceedingly expensive compared to the cost of the Miyoo Mini (not Plus) models. As usual, great video Russ! I never feel like you’re wasting my time, even on longer videos. Nice work! 👍

Yup! Called a spade a spade! While those buttons look really awesome, I appreciate that you called them pricey. I want them for my Odin but I could not pull the trigger. I'm cheap so $24 is a lot for me to spend on 4 pcs. of buttons, though I think for some time during the initial sale it was going for $13 or my mind's playing tricks on me.
I'm using SakuraRetro buttons, those sightly transparents and they look really good. The feeling is a bit raw, clearly more texture that the original Miyoo Mini but they fit actually better than the stock buttons, so it's better overall.

Thanks for proving to me that the speaker upgrades are too different to definitively decide one is better than the other. Overall the stock speaker seems good enough for what this device is and any upgrades are gaining and sacrificing some things over others. Ill just leave my Miyoo stock. Great video!
Just fyi anytime you do sound tests you should try very hard to normalize the signals to the same RMS levels before comparing them. You can even put a highpass filter on there to get the relative volume levels and then take it off, so you can accurately hear the difference in bass levels at the same "volume" level. Humans are biased to think louder sounds sound "better" unless they are distorting.
I thought I had to solder or something for the speaker. If it's just a swap after opening it, I could manage. Might be worth considering if I think the sound is subpar for the Miyoo Mini Plus that I ordered, but I'll wait until I have it and have played it a while before deciding if the speaker needs replacing or not. What would be really nice is seeing a product like this with an OLED screen as the cherry on top. I think people would be willing to pay a small premium if there's a good and responsive OLED screen. And these devices don't get bright enough in the first place for burn-in to be an issue (assuming they don't use a trash quality screen).
@@ekiny Well... I'm still waiting for my order. I ordered a black one from Keepretro and supposedly they all ship before April 30th... but with 2 delays already I don't have much faith. I'll contact them if the 30th passes and mine still isn't shipped though. It's pretty stupid though. Since when I ordered they were still up for a few more days by the time they got sold out. So about a month delay, if not more despite more shipments coming in is just pretty stupid. Those who ordered the purple one have it even rougher, their estimated date is May 10th... but what's more ridiculous is that some of them were actually offered a black one that could be shipped the same day (meaning they're giving them priority over the people who actually ordered a black one). I don't think I'll ever be ordering anything from them again after this.

I would have really liked to have seen the #15 speaker tested (different aliexpress listing, previous comment removed for posting it) instead of this needlessly expensive sony one since it's the second most popular choice & miles better than the #8. The #15 is under $4, first I'm hearing of this Sony one but it can't be worth the extra cost.
Is the #15 much better than the #8? I did the #8 upgrade and it is definitely better than stock. I ordered a few more #8 for my other minis. But now I'm curious about #15.
@user-jh6uz7pe4v much better, like Russ I also felt like the 8 was only a very slight improvement, I was disappointed. The 15 sounds fuller, bassier, clearer, it also gets louder & stays clear. The part itself is 49 cents, the rest is shipping, so you can get a few for 5 bucks. Tried to post the link but it still won't let me, you should be able to find it in some of the speaker threads on reddit tho.
I'm having a really hard time getting a Retro gray Miyoo-mini. I get notifications when they supposedly are in stock, but I've yet to see a purchase prompt. I'm EST and 9 GMT is 4AM here (The notifications keep happening at around 1:20-1:50 AM EST). Staying up that late for 2 weeks has had a toll on me. yesssssss playstation buttons!!!! It's one of the first thing i look into, im picky and don't really like x y b a. Now to find the mini at a decent price lol =3=
i want the last case shown - for the deck of cards - but in MM+ sizing
Great video. Im looking for a full CAD file for the complete shell for the MiYoo Mini Plus
im about to cave and buy a miyoo mini from a reseller if i miss this next restock on christmas :(
I am wondering if you can make a aya neo 2 full setup guide, it will be helpful.😊
I'm surprised you didn't add a transparent battery cover and the fake CD card from Sakura Retro Modding.
How can you tell genuine sony speakers? Are the numbers on them part numbers? Or do they indicate anything? Or are they random?
To my old ears the Stock sounds best for speaker, lol.
Redmi had distortions occasionally and Sony sounded way too tinny.
I jave put some thermal pad whit a small piece of copper for better heat dissipation of processor
What pad's size did you use?
@@elimiranda5276 custom size. I have cut a piece and adapted to my needs, I don't measure it
@@kllaus21 I see, thanks for answering! Did you notice any heat difference with the copper?
Could you do one of these upgrade videos for the rg35xx? Would love to see what I can try
Oh man which sonic game is that? That music brings me back but I can't remember which game
deliciousness 😁👍
I'm having a really hard time getting a Retro gray Miyoo-mini. I get notifications when they supposedly are in stock, but I've yet to see a purchase prompt. I'm EST and 9 GMT is 4AM here (The notifications keep happening at around 1:20-1:50 AM EST). Staying up that late for 2 weeks has had a toll on me. Do you have any tips for getting one of these bad boys?
I've been trying to get one too. Not going to pay the eBay price and support the resellers.
@@FeelYourMind ok if you send them a message they will respond and tell you the date and time. the drop times have been at 3AM EST. it takes about 3 min past to update. add it to your cart them buy it, if you "buy it now" it will get snaked from you wile your putting your PayPal info in.
I see that there is a loud speaker/buzzer and speaker/ear piece. Is there a difference?
I really want one of these. I ordered it like two weeks ago on AliExpress, and it still hasn’t showed up. I ordered the speaker and a set of transparent blue buttons with the shoulder buttons on eBay and they’re showing up before the device. 😂
Welp, now I know what I'm doing today. My PSX Sakura buttons just showed up!
Th mods prices are outrageous - intense manufacturing or not, 32$ for 4 buttons is insane
Just to confirm, the speaker you are using in this video says EAS1S201A or EAS1S210B on top? It seems there are atleast 2 different versions of this speaker out there.
Niiiice
Aw snap
Miyoo Mini V2 is like $100+ everywhere now. I'm assuming it's because of the holidays?
You have to buy from the official Miyoo aliexpress store. They haven't been putting up a lot of stock in the last month. Prior to that it seems there was a lot more stock.
The scalpers have been selling at those prices for months now. The official store sells them for $70+ daily but the stock runs out quickly.
The redmi note speaker objectively sounds the best. The other two hurt my ears cos the high pitch sounds tinny and gross. The redmi sounds nice
Where did you get the blue playing cards case at 12:44?
I have the white mini as well and was looking for some really polished black buttons but all I see are the 3d printed ones. Maybe more will come out soon, because these seem pretty good!
Getting a miyoo mini plus. Are the speakers the same size as the regular mini? Definitely want too upgrade if so.
Hi, can those mods (speaker and front buttons) be aplied on the mini plus ??
Yeah, I have the same question.
What are your top 5 games you play on the miyoo mini?
Is that working the speaker too from the mini Plus ?
What's the point of the shoulder buttons? They seem much less comfortable
