SUVs may be all the rage right now, but a family hatchback is still one of the best-value propositions on the new car market. Peugeot’s latest 308 promises striking looks as well as cutting-edge tech that puts even some premium rivals to shame. But can it really stand up against the likes of the Volkswagen Golf or even the Mercedes A-Class? Richard Ingram puts it to the test to find out.

As someone who has had several Pug hot hatches (205 GTi 1.6, 205 GTi 1.9, 208 GTi, 308 GTI) it's the lack of options at the end that concerns me.
And much as I just bought a manual car (GR Yaris), it's definitely time for most machines to be automatic now we're in the era of DCTs etc.
PS You mention "basic" but Peugeot are really trying to go a little upmarket these days, with prices to match

Having test driven 3008 as new possible dog carrier to replace unreliable Alfa Stelvio, I think the I Drive set up with steering wheel is absolutely no issue . Just would like physical climate and agree the hybrid is better than 1.3 petrol having driven both all be it in 3008 ...quick note we also have had a Golf 7.5R the interior in new Golf 8 is horrendous quality compared with Peugeot

they also somehow made some mistake on that i-cockpit design in 308. their latest ncap safety test shows too much pressure on driver's chest area and %76 rating for the cabin safety which is the lowest in the family (astra %80/ds4 %85). i dont want to wear my tinfoil head and speculate but given their being french history im almost sure they f.ed up while trying to find design/budget balance. i had too high hopes for the new generation of c hatches from stelantis but they just cant help themselves when it comes to design over real life usability decisions.

I'm really pleased with my new Peugeot 308 GT petrol, it's a great car. I've had it almost a month and do I regret my decision YES. The reason why is that Peugeot are supplying the new 308 with missing equipment. Mine is missing...heated windscreen, wireless charging, 3D i-Cockpit, heated steering wheel and traction control deactivation. There should be a series of function buttons to the bottom right of the steering wheel. My car just has 5 blanking plates where these should be and this missing kit is not an isolated incident, search for - Peugeot Forum..Missing Specifications. It's my first and last Peugeot. oooo, "grow over" already about this steering wheel... I'm only 1.72m and I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM with instrument cluster visibility in my P508II as well as I didn't have it in P5008II before 508! and, no, I don't have a steering wheel "dropped into my lap", nor do I have seat raised up to its maximum.
does it require a slight adjustment of driving position? yes it does! is it "the end of the world" because of it? no it isn't! ...in fact, once you get used to it (which happens rather quickly), it's hard to get back behind "normal" st.wheel..... so, stop nagging about it and adjust! it would be time already...

Icockpit is the most stupid design ever, why do something a percentage of people will hate or won't be able to use properly??? The Astra has a much better interior

It does seem to be going that way but I still choose this type of car over an SUV.
