"A Song of Ice and Fire (commonly abbreviated as ASoIaF) is an ongoing series of epic fantasy novels by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. Martin began writing the series in 1991 and the first volume was published in 1996. The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily on a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses others are introduced, such as the cold and menacing supernatural Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both thought to be extinct by the humans of the story. There are three principal story lines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros among several competing families; the rising threat of the Others, who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years before, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, the three story lines become increasingly interwoven and dependent upon each other."

Bracken
Blackwoods because of their colors, symbolism, worship of the old gods, and produced a lot of notable characters. Also they outlasted the Tullys as being the sole remaining holdout for Robb's kingdom in the north
Blackwood
I'm here for Blackwood and the Old Gods!
Blackwood
GRRM loves the blackwoods which is why they NEVER lose. They are always on the winning side while the brackens often ally with the side that eventually loses, or join the winning side later.
Kinda unfair btw, I always thought that Brackens were not an "evil house" like Peake,Bolton,Frey,etc..They really are just always on the wrong side of every maior conflict. Sad
@andreademarchi7495 yeah even though I prefer the Blackwoods, at the same time I dont like that the Brackens were made into the bad guys whereas as you said, theres actual bad houses out there. I never got the vibes that the Brackens were specifically malicious
The Brackens gained land and were sort of on the winning side at the end of dance
@@teamxofcha0s61 unfair bias
@@Spongebrain97 Exactly
It's noted that Robb Stark was scared when he saw that BOTH Brackens AND Blackwoods sided with him against the Lannisters! Says alot about the Lannisters and Tywin Lannister!
To be fair, Clegane torched, slaughtered and brutalized the lands of both Houses. You pretty much cannot do anything but fight against that even if it’s with your enemy next door. The moment Robb died they went back to it.
Also probably show's house good Robb was or even just the Starks.
Ah, Robb Stark😢
Gone too soon. And the saddest part is that he’s probably the only Stark sibling who actually loved Jon. Considering that in the end of the show, Rickon (who might also loved Jon) died. Bran knew that Daenerys was gonna nuke King’s Landing and Jon had to kill her and he let that happened anyway to usurp the throne from Jon. Sansa usurped the king (queen) the north throne from Jon while exiling Jon to the wall (don’t forget that she intentionally chose not to tell Jon about the Vale army while fighting the Boltons and was pissed that Jon somehow survived the battle. And when she leaked the info about Jon being a Targaryen to sow he seeds of conflict between Jon and Dany) and Arya did nothing to prevent that. She never defended Jon in a trial in anyway shape or form.
These 3 Stark siblings always treat Jon as a bastard, not as a guy who helped them reclaiming their home and uniting the realm to fight the white walkers in the first place.
In the end, the Starks are more of a backstabbing traitor than the Lannisters or Freys. What an achievement for D&D that they managed to turn the most sympathetic family into the most insufferable one.

This could to totally happen in the last battle in the last war for Westeros. Another GRRM hat-tip to JRT.

The war of the five kings proved that House Bracken’s Ability to always lose is greater than Blackwoods ability to always win
Real
At first i though "well, we still don't know how's the story going to end" then i remembered that Winds is never coming out 🙄🙄
Take your like sir
House bracken suffers from an acute condition of “chronic writers bias” where the Blackwood’s get the best of every single confrontation, or are morally justified in their actions. If a Blackwood was to take a village, it would be a just and noble act. If the brackens were to retake that village, then it would be a cowardly and treacherous one.
It also doesn’t help that the Bracken heraldry is diabolical. If you just had a red horse on a yellow background it would be S tier in my opinion.
The only instance I can think of where the Blackwoods seemed to be in the wrong was when during the Dance of the Dragons they raided villages in Bracken lands and burned their septs but this gets forgotten because Bloody Ben and Black Aly are cool characters
@@Spongebrain97 More just because that's how war is done. They were at war with each other, Bracken would have done the same thing.
House Bracken has the unfortunate position to be the main enemy of essentially one of the more interesting houses in the Riverlands. Which is why most people dont like them. Like look at the lore for the Blackwoods, its far more interesting then the Brackens.
@@DevinEMILEYou mean it has far more author's favoritism?
I pretty much ignore the brunatre bordure on their shield
One thing where I side with show over books
You could say the same about House Stark and House Lannister. How the Lannisters are always the “bad guys” in any conflict.
This video has muppet Tullys, and that's all the joy I need for the rest of the week.
6:43 the defeat that the Blackwoods were so sour about that they had to remake it to be THEIR own victory in the HOTD series 🤣🤣🤣
I got to this point in the video and came looking for this comment!
@@debragrogan6235 🫡🫡🫡
I find it funny and intriguing how Blackwoods (who are presented as honorable and loyal) were exiled from the North, while likes of Boltons were left alone despite their well known hostility towards Starks. It really makes me wonder what was happening in the North during those "old days".
As for which house is better - that's a tough one. I'd say that both sides have their own appeal as well as many flaws. I will, however, say that Bittersteel is better than Bloodraven and die on that hill.
Based take.
With the Blackwoods being forced down south I think that is due to how the Starks weren't always honorable. That as they fought for control of the north it was very much a war of conquest with honor no where to be seen. They forced out the Blackwoods because they wanted their land. The Boltons however were strong and while they could be defeated, the Starks didn't have the manpower to outright destroy them or force them out. This also came into play when the Andals invaded and so the Starks and Boltons allied to defend their First Men traditions against the invaders
Starks made some pacts and alliances to beat the North
Bolton was almost a King they have so many people that only the North combine could beat the Bolton Army
Well, the Starks are not known for having great intelligence, aren’t they?
I mean, the red wedding wasn’t even the first time that the Boltons betray the Starks. There were two occasions before that: Royce II Bolton burned Winterfell and Royce IV Bolton skinned Stark princes to make his cloak. The Boltons should have been wiped out thousands of years ago but somehow the Starks and their bs honor let them live.
This is why I believe the Bracken side of the story when they said that Blackwoods used to be their vassal. It was likely the same situation of the Gardeners and the Tyrells, except this time the newcomers eventually declared themselves kings.
HOUSE BRACKEN FOREVER!!!!!!!
Great video, as always, Lord Haven.
You misspelled Blackwood but I agree great video as always

Unironically the brackens are right to dislike the blackwoods. Imaging some random house flees the north, chooses to settle on your border, and immediately begins antagonizing you for centuries
I think it was stated the brackens also came from the North.
Both claiming the other was their subordinate house
@@sudanemamimikiki1527I don't think it's that the Brackens came from the north, rather that they were also of first men decent like the Blackwoods who did come from the north, though I could see the possibility that the Brackens and Rhyswells are somehow connected due to both having a red stallion on their arms and both being of First Men decent, so it would be pretty cool if that was the case lol

That was my thought, too!😂
I don't understand how GRRM did not give Walder Frey a Bracken-wife; can you imagine the Blackwood-Freys vs. the Bracken-Freys? Would have been fantastic.
Interestingly, because Alyssa Blackwood is his grandmother and because Betha is an ancestor of the Targaryens and Baratheons and another Blackwood, Melantha, is the ancestor of the Starks (and possibly more cousins), Big Walder Frey is a fourth cousin to Dany, Stannis, Jon, Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran, and Rickon.
The fuck ?
Someday we'll see Elmo and Grover in their muppety glory.
Forgot to include Harron the Black crushed the Brackens and Blackwoods whole they were feuding because it was disruptting construction of Harrenhall, and thus led to the Tully's surviving as the strongest Riverlords 😛

Everyone knows GRRM was bullied by a Bracken as a kid which is why they're all on his shitlist.
Love the detail of First men having bronze swords in the past.
GRRM is huge lover of the Blackwoods and so am I.
A House who show determination and loyalty meanwhile Brackens are backstabbers and usurpers.
“In faith we shall prevail” -actual blackwood motto
Idk if this makes me a sicko but the animation of that iron born king choking that kid made me laugh so hard
In Westeros the 4th of July is celebrated to remember the day when House Bracken attempted to seal House Blackwood's fireworks and were soundly defeated in battle. Bittersteel was only a boy at the time but that day changed him forever
@Spongebrain97 Brackens only loss because Blackwoods and cowardly and hide.
Hope you are well.
No. 👎
"Why don't you shut your mouth about that damn mill?"
Just imagine, Bracken and Blackwood attack the Twins, each from one side, and later each House makes one side of the Twins a cadet branch.

Bittersteel is one of the biggest badasses in the seven kingdoms and abroad.
Beneath the gold, the bitter steel!
Daemon: Why do the Blackwoods & Brackens have Beef?
Simon: Oh where to begin
Haven: Sit down grab a a flagon of wine I can explain.
The pennytree is not the weirwood… it’s an oak in a village contested by both Blackwood and bracken and eventually made a royal fief.
I wonder which side the Aegor Rivers profile is going to support.
Truly a question for the ages😄

But real question, if you were to create the house words for Blackwood and Bracken, what would they be?
"At first, it was for Honour and Glory, then later for vengeance though we termed it 'justice'
Eventually, it was because we simply did not know how to stop."
What tools or software do you recommend for editing videos like this?
Everyone knows the words of house blackwood "fuk around and find out"
Just you watch guys, my boy Hoster is gonna bag that Bracken baddie and reform the glorious House Justman 💪
Let me tell ya a couple of three things: Forget the Dance of the Dragons, forget Raylon Rivers who goes over to Stone Hedge and never comes back, forget my lord Humfrey Bracken.
Benjicot Blackwood has no respect for this thing. He's never been a lord, not really. Here's a kid who stepped over his own house to grab the big seat, his father's house.
13 Fucking Major houses in the Riverlands, and then we got this pygmy thing over in Raventree Hall
I can't believe the Brackens use Tyrek Lannister as their sigil
My favourite thing about the whole blackwood/bracken conflict is that the only reason people like the Brackens is to purely spite GRRM
To be fair idea of Freys ending on combine end of hatred of both Brackens and Blackwoods is quite appealing
Im a Blackwood fan. Fight me. I don't care if they suffer from writers bias or wtv. They're of the first men and they're badass. Hosue Bracken isn't bad. But do they have a cool oriimgin story and something making them unique amongst their peers? Nah.
The blackwood join to Jon Snow during the battle of the bastard that's why im always on their side
Dunno if this is controversial, but here‘s my take on these two houses/their rivalry:
It doesn’t make sense to not like both. Their biggest characteristic is that they‘re in a laughibly petty rivalry with one another, a trait they both share, which means their defining characteristic is identical. The differences are minor. What makes them entertaining is their rivalry, and people should just sit back and smile at the silly disputes instead of picking a side and falling into the same mentality the writer is trying to paint as bad here
